hello and welcome to the film review on bbc news. to take us through this week's cinema releases is james king. so james, what do we have this week? a newjersey girl thinks she is the new saviour of hip—hop. he said i'll be back and now he is. arnold schwarzenegger returns in the 3-d arnold schwarzenegger returns in the 3—d release of terminator two.
this is a thriller about a merger on the loose. let's have a look at bill in action. what are you looking for? i'mjust in action. what are you looking for? i'm just looking, trying to understand. what else is there to be understood? in terms of logic there is none. he slaughtered the household. the previous week a prostitute, alice dunton, before that, an old man, a scholar. 0h, prostitute, alice dunton, before that, an old man, a scholar. oh, my god. is that? yes, laid upon the
opening pages of a book onjewish folklore. like a bookmark. is that how the press got the name? our murder obviously approved. look at this, women in the streets, i remember reading of that one... this, women in the streets, i remember reading of that one. .. her name was jane quick. remember reading of that one. .. her name was jane quick. is it over the top? maybe that can be a good thing. it is gothic horror. i like that. i find it gripping. it is gory, but not overly. it is at the right moments. it is a thriller rather than a horror film. moments. it is a thriller rather than a horrorfilm. for me it was all about the cast. bill nighy and eddie marsden, as well as some other great actors. what is going on in this film is the undercurrent to the
thriller movement. really it is about performance. it is about how performance was so about performance. it is about how performance was so important at this time in the music halls. but also just the people in their everyday lives. there are people in the movie putting on a mask and playing roles. and then there is the goal of himself, the serial killer, who is this performer who would like an audience and recognition. when you have that theme, that undercurrent running through the movie, that gives the cast something juicy to sink their teeth into. also the music hall, the music hall world is seductive. remembertipping music hall, the music hall world is seductive. remember tipping the velvet? yes, it is visually very rich. very rich, very seductive, great to watch at the movies. this was originally a book. it has been adapted. and it's a good job. lots of plot going on. she has done a greatjob of of plot going on. she has done a great job of streamlining of plot going on. she has done a greatjob of streamlining it, drip feeding information, the penny has dropped at the right moments. big
fan of this. good start. patti cakes get a lot of interest at the sundance festival. are absolutely. fox would love this to be a big crossover hit. it is about a girl from newjersey, the title character, who leads a downbeat life, but dreams of making it big in the rap world, in hip—hop. daniel mcdonald, an australian actress, actually, a relative newcomer in this. i think the problem with it is it is funny and charming but it does not quite know what it wants to be. -- dani it reminded me a bit of hairspray. a bit of fun and over the top. sometimes the film gets serious. sometimes the film gets serious. sometimes it wants to make political and social point and it goes a bit
eight mile. a bit the other way. it is six of one and half a dozen of the other. but the music is great. i like that it is subversive, putting this overweight white girl into the world of hip—hop, which traditionally is much more glamorous and matharu. shaking things up quite and matharu. shaking things up quite a lot. just not sure whether it is full on comedy orfull on a lot. just not sure whether it is full on comedy or full on serious. it isa full on comedy or full on serious. it is a mix of the two. it's not sure what it wants to be. but she is good? yes, very charismatic lead. i said we would leave the best until last. terminator two, so good they brought it back. yes, and in 3-d. some would say arnold schwarzenegger's acting was barely to do. but james schwarzenegger's acting was barely to do. butjames cameron, who had success converting titanic into 3—d,
has got the same team to do the same thing. let's have a look at the classic scene. keep it under 65. affirmative. no, you have the listen to the way people talk. you don't say, affirmative, you say no problemo, and if somebody comes up to you with an attitude you say, eat me, and if you want somebody to go away you say hasta la vista, baby. hasta la vista, baby. i'd almost forgotten that phrase but now it is back to haunt everybody. i
appreciate you saying he has reworked it, it is in 3—d, do we need that? the 3-d is fine, pretty good job. i only saw it when it came back on the big screen. i had waited a long time to see it on the big screen again. just seeing it on the big screen, forget the 3—d element, is amazing. because it is a movie of awesome set pieces, and action scenes. we can see some there. it is sarah connor, the linda hamilton character, one of the great action heroes of all time. great to see her on the big screen. just seeing it as big as you can. maybe you have never seen big as you can. maybe you have never seen it on the big screen. that is why this is a great opportunity to catch up with it. it is old but it still works. some of the special effects look creepy now. james cameron admitted that. but the movie has so much power, it is gutsy, it is full of bravado, that it still packs a punch. you may be very young and not even born when this was
released. maybe you've never seen it. maybe there is a new audience for it. do you think people will think it is dated? in 1991 this was the most expensive film of all time. even though it is now hold it still holds up because they put so much into it when it first came out. it is worth having a look at if you've never seen is worth having a look at if you've never seen it before. yes, you forget how expensive it was. interesting. best out? detroit. it is tough to watch because it is based on true events from 50 years ago. the fateful events of one night in the city. it is doing 0k business in the city. it is doing 0k business in the uk at the moment. i would like to see it do better. perhaps we have had our fill of like to see it do better. perhaps we have had ourfill of intensity like to see it do better. perhaps we have had our fill of intensity with dunkirk, which has been a massive success dunkirk, which has been a massive su ccess over dunkirk, which has been a massive success over the summer dunkirk, which has been a massive success over the summer and people cannot handle another tough, intense true story at the cinema. i don't know. but it's worth seeing. look out for will poulter, who is
fantastic. directed by kathryn bigelow. he was married to james cameron when he made terminator two. i hope it is better at the cinema. it deserves to. dvd. something to lift us. if you don't want the dark and bleak, something funny and silly to lift us all. yes, this is mindhorn. it is about a guy who was very popular in the 80s. he's been down on his luck ever since. any gets a call from the police saying there is a criminal on the loose obsessed with the old tv show, mindhorn. you need to get back into character and help solve the crime. he does that. very funny gags about acting, tv detectives, lots of references to john nettles, lots acting, tv detectives, lots of references tojohn nettles, lots of references tojohn nettles, lots of references tojohn nettles, lots of references to bergerac. lots of jokes about the isle of man, where it is mainly set. but it is done
with affection. julian barratt wrote it and directed it. elements of alan partridge, because he was another minor celebrity down on his luck. even though you are laughing, even though it is funny, it is done with respect to the genres it is making fun of, which is key. that's delightful. some people felt it was a series of tv sketches woven together. but funny ones. and stay until the end. the end credits are a jov- until the end. the end credits are a joy. i didn't know that. great tip. excellent. that will lift everybody. thank you. lovely to see you. thanks very much. james king with all of your pointers as to what you might like to see this week. thank you for being with us. enjoy what ever you might see over the next few days. goodbye. a pretty decent first day of
september. the first day of autumn. this is the sun setting over the bay in devon. very serene as we enter the day. it will be a weekend of two halves. after a fresh start we are expecting some sunshine during saturday. things will turn soggy on saturday. things will turn soggy on saturday with wet and windy weather during the second half of the weekend. but tonight, clearskies, some showers over eastern england, but they should fade away overnight for most of us. perhaps a few heavy ones around coastal parts of the far south—east. with those light winds and clear skies tens and —— towns and clear skies tens and —— towns and cities between ten to 12 degrees, but in the countryside it could be even colder. there is even the chance of some ground frost. a fresh start saturday but some sunshine to compensate. looking like a decent day. high pressure dominating. light winds, dry conditions, some patchy cloud, but
largely a fine day to come. just the odd isolated shower, particularly over eastern england. scotland having a dry day. and it'll feel pleasa ntly having a dry day. and it'll feel pleasantly warm. light winds and lots of sunshine. northern ireland having a pretty good day. some rain moving in from the west for the latter pa rt moving in from the west for the latter part of the afternoon. wet and windy overnight. but it is a story of long spells of sunshine for most of central england in southern england. it is looking fine for the south west of england and much of wales, too. things start to change saturday evening. this front moves in from the west. things will turn windy with the arrival of heavy rain for northern ireland, pushing into wales, south—west england, and sells west scotland during the early hours. —— and south—west scotland during the early hours. on sunday this front is approaching from the west. an area of high pressure still sitting over the near continent. that will keep things dry over
eastern parts of england. perhaps in the eastern scotland for much of the day. but you will notice the cloud and rain moving infrom day. but you will notice the cloud and rain moving in from the west with the strengthening breeze. probably arriving in the south—east during the course of the evening. temperatures cooler than saturday, between 15 to 90 degrees with the cloud and outbreaks of rain. saturday, better day of the week. —— 15 to 19 degrees. hello, this is bbc world news today. i'm ben bland. the top stories. kenya's supreme court declare the results of last month's elections invalid. the president says he will accept the result. i personally disagree with the ruling that has been made today. but i respect it. the bbc uncovers the abuse of detainees at an immigration centre in southern england. the worst flood
