"early start" continues right now. >> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. >> we have breaking news this morning. a possible tornado in van, texas. emergency officials call this a mass casualty event. what we know so far, at least 26 people injured. 20 plus structured damaged or destroyed. meteorologist pedram javaheri following the storm system for us. pedram we know they were going house to house in van, texas, trying to make sure everyone accounted for. everyone is accounted for at

this point. there are injuries. tell us what we know. >> the town of 2,600 people. they were going door-to-door. everyone is accounted for. the first baptist church one area where people rushed when the tornado warning was issued at 8:55. we go in for a closer perspective perspective. the storm is still producing severe weather east of the region. as you exit from van to areas of laneville and marshall texas, we have storms over the line in the region. it has a history of producing tornadoes in little rock to shreveport. tornado watch in effect until 5:00 a.m. local time. notice the active line of thunderstorms. upwards of 1,000 lightning strikes every hour over the past

several hours. talk about a challenging night to get any sort of sleep here. as we head to sunrise, the storms rocking and rolling over the region. a broad perspective. we are watching the storm as it migrates off to the east. 57 million people in line for severe weather. the threat on a scale of 1 to 5 was a 4 on sunday. that dropped to a 2. a slight risk. 24 reports of tornadoes across the country on sunday afternoon. a half a dozen coming out of texas. the vast majority from iowa and south dakota. when you go closer to look at what happened across the northern reaches of the area tremendous rainfall. dallas and north up to 10 inches of rainfall has come down in the past 24 hours. you work to corsicana, they had up to 9 inches of rainfall. that is how much rainfall they have seen in recent days across the area of texas.

tremendous rainfall. beneficial for some. when you get this much significant flooding threat in line for a lot of people as well. we are watching the activity weather push to the east. shreveport to little rock. memphis and nashville and indianapolis by the afternoon hours. >> they have a lot of basements up north. a lot of people in texas don't have basements. you can build a storm shelter, but not basements. thanks, pedram. we have our first pictures from van, texas. 70 miles east of dallas. you can see right there the building. we don't know what it was. the operative word there is "was." this is our first picture from van, texas where a tornado hit. we heard reports of 26 people at least injured. 20 buildings destroyed. we are told everyone is accounted for.

we are awaiting word on the condition of those injured. three powerful storm systems hitting parts of the country with heavy rains and tornadoes. >> the atlantic hurricane season doesn't start until june 1st. tropical storm ana made landfall north of myrtle beach, south carolina. >> ana causing rough surf. 12-foot seas caused a ban of swimming in the ocean. once the storm was ashore it weakened to a tropical depression. it continued to drop heavy rain. much of colorado digging out from a snowstorm this morning. forecasters now warn of flooding through mid week as the snow melts. >> you see how heavy that snow is. in south dakota, snow as well and a tornado. blizzard-like conditions hit the

black hills in the western part of the state. more than a foot of heavy, wet snow. in eastern south dakota the town of delmonte the storm damaged 20 buildings. another tornado tore through the iowa town of lake city. ripping the roof off the local high school with about 100 people inside for an awards ceremony. >> there goes the school. there goes the school! that's the school. >> go right up in the air. >> the sirens gave people plenty of time to evacuate. there are no classes today at the high school. obviously in lake city. we have told you about van, texas where a tornado hit. in denton county rescue helicopters pulled six people from their flooded homes. in crum a swollen creek swept away cars. a tornado in eastland

county texas. we have jennifer gray there. >> reporter: this is west of dallas in the town of cisco. this is an area hardest hit by the storms on saturday. you see the trees behind snapped in half. preliminary reports are saying it was an ef-3 tornado that came through here and caused extensive damage three quarters of a mile wide and a path of seven miles long. we were up at a higher elevation. you see the trees snapped. a couple of miles in that direction, we have been told that three homes were a total loss. we can can't't get to them. trees are down covering the road. unfortunately, one person died in the storms on saturday. three others injured. at last report one person in critical condition. we talked to the public information officer from the area. he said they had tornadoes before but none has really impacted many structures.

this is the hardest they have been hit in the area. more storms in the forecast later today. john and christine. >> jennifer gray thank you for that. this afternoon, two mississippi police officers will be honored at a memorial service. officials say they were shot to death at a traffic stop in hattiesburg, mississippi. rosa flores reports the suspects are in custody. >> reporter: john and christine, we hear this from law enforcement experts all the time. there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. this is a perfect example. now three suspect are in custody and two police officers are dead. according to police what happened here is that officer benjamin deen made a traffic stop and this involved a vehicle with three people inside. he called for back up.

officer liquori tate responded. then investigators say that the suspects shot and killed those two police officers. now, they also say that the suspect took one of the police cruisers and used it as a run away car. of course police later apprehended the suspects. here are the names, marvin banks and jonie calloway charged with capital murder. then curtis banks charged with two counts of accessory of capital murder after the fact. this investigation is in the hands of the mississippi bureau of investigation. we learned they are scouring through evidence and making interviews and asking people to figure out what happened here. again, they have not released a motive. i did talk to officer tate's father. he says he is broken. he had a very close relationship

director comey and i spend a lot of time talking to police chiefs and sheriffs around the country. we did that on friday. >> federal law enforcement officials say the fbi is increase monitoring in the u.s. one said we are trying to shake the trees more aggressively. the pentagon is tightening military bases around the country. national correspondent sunlen serfaty has the latest. >> reporter: secretary of department homeland security tom ridge said it is because of this online campaign by isis that he believes that the threat is greater than in the days after 9/11. here is what he had to say on cnn's "state of the union." >> their appeal to the lone wolves in belgium and france and canada and the united states. the threat vectors and the nature are complicated and

serious today than on september 12th 2001. >> reporter: and the pentagon on thursday night put all military bases across the country on heightened state of alert. the concern here is that isis is reaching out and recruiting people in the u.s. to potentially target unformed military and law enforcement. the fbi director has warned there are hundreds maybe thousands of isis followers inside the u.s. the fbi has increased monitoring of the followers who may be influenced by the recruiters and have hundreds of investigations ongoing. jeh johnson said because of this the use of the internet by isis there could be little or no advanced warning of so-called lone wolf terrorists attacking in the u.s. >> sunlen serfaty at the white house. time for an early start on your money.

breaking news out of van, texas. a reported tornado, van, texas is 70 miles east of dallas. you can look at the pictures of the aftermath. before you saw a building completely destroyed. officials say at least 26 people have been injured and more than 20 buildings damage or destroyed. a large scale search and rescue operation. officials do now say that everyone has been accounted for. that is good news. no one is missing at this point. van is not the only city in texas hit by a tornado. in eastland county a reported tornado killed one person and injured three others. elsewhere, storms spawned by tornadoes dropped heavy rain from colorado to iowa to the carolinas. >> wild night. in yemen, a breakthrough. houthis offered a five-day

cease-fire. it is scheduled to take effect tuesday. allowing for humanitarian aid to reach civilians in need. cnn's frederik pleitgen is monitoring the latest from london. there is a lot of activity up to the last minute frankly. the people there must desperately need that aid. >> reporter: you are right, christine. certainly. the u.n. estimates 300,000 people have been displaced so far by the action that has been going in yemen over the past six weeks. they say 1,400 have been killed. majority of them civilians. there is a shortage of food and fuel and water. the big problem is the cease-fire will last five days. the ports are damaged. bringing ships in will be difficult and the airfields have been damaged an as well.

bringing aid in by air will be a problem. this is seen as a positive step at this point in time in the crisis that has been going on for a long time. however, you are right to point out that military action is inn intenseifying up to the cease-fire. the saudi-led coalition said it conducted 130 air strikes on saturday alone. on sunday apparently the coalition lost a plane. the royal moroccan air force, part of the coalition against the houthis, said the f-16 went down over yemen. the houthis say they shot this plane down. it is not clear if the pilot was able to eject. there is good news of the cease-fire on the horizon. set to take hold on tuesday. however, there is still a lot of fighting all the way in the run-up to the cease-fire and certainly the people there need aid very badly. something the u.n. says is

20 plus structures damaged or destroyed. we have heard now from emergency officials, a big search and rescue operation, officials now telling us everyone has been accounted for at this point. still, we are waiting for more word on the condition of those who have been hurt. i want to bring in meteorologist pedram javaheri who is following the storm system. it is an immense system for us. good morning. pedram. >> good morning. it is impacting so many people. i counted the tornadoes since last wednesday. 128 tornadoes touching down. ten in the past 24 hours. multiple north and east of dallas. this one in van at 9:00 p.m. local time. we know dozens of people going to the local churches to get away from the storm system. as you know now, all people

accounted for. a tornado watch in effect for another 30 minutes from east of little rock and shreveport. this will bring down over 1,000 lightning strikes per hour. this storm system is powerful and rotation is possible with the storm system. we zoom out the perspective and show you the active weather. that pushes to the east. we touched on the tornadoes over texas. there was about ten over texas. besides that another 14 tornadoes in oklahoma and iowa and south dakota. 24 in total. we had 24 severe hail reports and damaging wind reports. incredible story from south dakota. we talk about the clash of air masses. look at areas 125 miles apart. pierre significant snowfall. we had tornadoes in south dakota. you look at the snow depth and not unheard of in the month of may, but impressive in aspen and

the official season starts june 1st. ana made landfall north of myrtle beach, south carolina. >> ana causing up to 12-foot seas and officials had to ban ocean swimming up the coast into southern north carolina. once ana was onshore, she weaken weakened to a tropical depression. colorado is digging out from a late season snowstorm. the snow covered branches snapped. forecasters are warning that there could be flooding throughout the week as all the snow melts. south dakota got snow and a tornado. blizzard-like conditions in the black hills with more than a foot of heavy wet snow. in delmonte a tornado damaged 20 buildings.
