it is thursday july 16th. john berman has the day off. a major scare for former president george h.w. bush. he is in the hospital in portland maine, after the fall in kennebunk port maine. he fell in maine and broke a bone in his neck. he is stable and fine but in a neck brace. the spokesman says the 91-year-old former president is not expected to have a long hospital stay. the elder bush suffers from parkinson's disease. beginning this morning, a new day of campaigning by the white house for the iran nuclear deal. vice president biden meets with democrats on the senate foreign relations committee today. that follows the sit down with house democrats on wednesday. and a news conference by the president aimed at corralling the support for the iran nuclear program on track. cnn's jim acosta has the latest.
>> reporter: president obama came out swinging insisting the nuclear deal with iran was never designed to solve every problem with tehran. the president brushed off the deal and hit back at opponents in congress demanding they read the agreement. mr. obama discussed why americans detained in iran were not freed as part of the deal. he touted the agreement's inspection process and dismissing doubts that iran would get away with cheating. >> if we're counting the amount of uranium mined and suddenly some is missing on the back end, they got some explaining to do. this is not something you hide in a closet. this is not something you put on a dolley and wheel off somewhere. >> reporter: the president knows he has more explaining to do which is why he sent his vice president to convince skeptical
democrats. and prime minister benjamin netanyahu says iran will never change. christine. >> thanks jim. that exchange jim mentioned about americans held by iran came as one of the rare moments when the president lashed back at a reporter. major garrett asked about the four americans, including jason rezaian, whom iran is holding. >> can you tell the country, sir, why you are content with the fanfare around the deal and leave the americans unaccounted for? >> i have to give you credit major, for how you craft those questions. the notion that i'm content as i celebrate with american citizens languishing in iranian jails.
major, that's nonsense and you should know better. i met with the families. nobody's content. >> the administration scrambling to convince leaders around the world that the nuclear deal is a good deal. secretary of state john kerry meets with the saudi arabia foreign minister and ash carter heads to the middle east to meet saudi officials on their home turf. the new york times reporting that the white house is trying to soften fierce israeli opposition in the deal. unnamed officials telling the times the u.s. is offering to increase the military aid package to israel. one unexpected side effect of the nuclear deal producing a thaw in relations with moscow. mr. obama calling president putin to thank him for the help in the negotiations. turning to the latest
correspondent atika shubert. >> reporter: christine, this iran deal is reshaping the political landscape in the region. israel is a major concern as an ally of the united states. we have spoken to the spokesperson for the prime minister. he confirmed that a telephone conversation did take place between netanyahu and president obama, but would not say what specifically was said in the conversation. he said the focus of israel remains the loopholes in the deal as israel sees it. with all of the limitations in the agreement, iran can still develop a nuclear weapon within 10 to 15 years but also because of the lifting of sanctions, iran will now be able to fund its military allys in the region like hezbollah and hamas. it is not the only concern. saudi arabia wants reassurance from the united states. before the deal was done in may,
president obama met with officials to try to assure them they would get the military aid from the u.s. missile defenses. this is a lot of diplomacy that has to be done assuring saudi arabia israel and other allies in the region with the bolstering ties with iran, u.s. still stands by the allies. >> thank you, atika shubert in london. details on donald trump. we have always known he is rich and successful. how rich? we did not know until he filed campaign disclosure forms with the federal election commission. in a press release with the forms, the candidate has defied critics who said he would never release the information. we have cnn's dana bash with the latest. >> reporter: christine, just how rich is donald trump? he says he has a net worth of $10 billion. and he says he made more than
$362 million last year alone. with classic trump style, he calls his wealth vast it is hard to fill out the forms because if a building owned by trump is worth $1.5 billion, the box checked is for $50 million or more. it is important to note that trump did not make the details of the financial disclosure public so we could not yet verify he made $213 million over the 14 seasons he was on the show "the an pren tuesday." the other thing that donald trump has to talk about and has been certainly talking been it a lot is the fact he is doing well in the polls. just for one example, the washington post/abc poll showed 57% of republican voters say that they have a favorable view of him. that is a big jump. almost double from what it was in may. those are the things you are
hearing from donald trump and you will hear more. one other interesting note is that he had a meeting with one of his competitors late yesterday. ted cruz. you think they would compete for the conservative vote particularly on immigration. ted cruz understands the trump mania. we will see how long that lasts. christine. >> dana you showed some of his stock picks in that report. time for an early start on your money. stocks up around the world this morning. stocks on a six-week high after the tough bailout for greece. that means greece will overhaul the pension and tax systems to cut spending and bring in revenue. it is causing anger on the streets of athens. protests turned violent overnight. police responded with tear gas. greece has to approve some reforms. here in the u.s. stock futures are higher.
stocks dipped slightly after janet yellen says the fed is on track to raise rates this year. the annual espy awards honor the best in sports. the highlight of wednesday's ceremony may have been a former champion now known as caitlyn jenner. she made an emotional plea for accepting people for who they are. stephanie elam was there. >> reporter: the espy awards were heart an breaking and inspiring. danielle green who came back to work with veterans after she lost her arm in battle. she received the pat tillman award. also an award for lauren hill. the young woman who wanted to play her one college basketball game. she lost her battle to cancer. her parents were on hand to accept that award. also devon still. his daughter is battling cancer. his speech moving the crowd as well as he toasted everyone for
their support of him while he has been battling this so he can stay strong for his daughter. of course the one person everyone was waiting to see was caitlyn jenner. she took her turn in the spotlight to focus on the struggle and challenges that so many young transgender people face not just in the united states but around the world. >> if you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions go ahead. because the reality is i can take it. but for the thousands of kids out there coming to terms with being true to who they are, they shouldn't have to take it. >> reporter: i talked to several people on the red carpet. for the most part the people i spoke to were supportive of caitlyn jenner winning the arthur ashe award for courage. some not really giving an opinion either way. when caitlyn jenner was done with the speech which at times

now we are getting an inside look at the el chapo's cramped prison cell and the hole in the shower stall that led to his freedom. here's cnn's nick valencia. >> reporter: it was a maze of checkpoints that led us here to the maximum security prison. this is cell 20. once home to the notorious drug traffickers. on this cell of eight cells, the ruthless criminals, el chapo the most infamous. these are memorandumremnants of what he left behind. this here is the blind spot that provided him access to the tunnel that led to his escape. a small hole with a deep drop down there. you could see here this block of
concrete was placed over hiding this access point to the tunnel. it is that security camera that had that blind spot here behind that allowed him to escape. this is the bed that el chapo slept on here. underneath not much space here. this is what he called home. the one time billionaire, used to lavish parties and lifestyle reduced to this. this is where he kept his belongings in the surveillance tape we saw. the only access to the outside, a small window here with a slight breeze coming through here as nights fallen. small and tight space. incredible when you consider this man is one of the richest men in the world. that's the access point that el chapo used to escape outside of the maximum security prison. this wall providing a blind spot for that 24-hour surveillance
camera that missed his exit. he was able to escape undetected by prison guards. >> nick valencia thank you for that inside el chapo's prison cell. day two of the jury deliberations of the trial of james holmes. on wednesday, the nine women and three men, asked for the notes taken by the psychiatrists who examined holmes. the case hinges on his mental state at the time of the 2012 shooting that killed 12 people and wounded 70. holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. prosecutors have asked for the death penalty. president obama says he cannot revoke bill cosby's medal of freedom because there is no mechanism for doing so. at the news conference the president could not comment on a case where criminal or civil charges could be brought. he then proceeded to comment with a definition of rape.

rainfall in the past 24 hours. we have flood watches and warnings from cooper to des moines and this is the concern for today with the additional rainfall expected. your high temperature in kansas city about 94 degrees. it feels close to 100 degrees this afternoon. 79 this chicago. new york city we make it up to 81 degrees with mostly sunny skies. hot in the plains today. it takes a lot for nasa scientists to be blown away. but the first ever up close pictures of pluto did the trick. nasa releasing the first batch of breathtaking images of pluto. they reveal ice mountains as tall as the rockies. a stunning lack of craters on the planet's surface suggesting it could be geologically active. the space probe traveled 3 billion miles over nine years to get the snapshots.

he was on his way. we dropped down ten feet on the initial ladder into a small space, walked another few feet and approached a second ladder into a deeper portion of the tunnel 20 feet down. a magnificent feat of engineering. it seemed like a professional job. coke bottles on the ground left behind with oxygen tanks and ventilation. pvc pipe along the tunnel with electrical lines to provide electricity. we got to see that motorcycle which ran on tracks which we believe el chapo used to escape from one end to the tunnel to the other. it was crammedped in there and overwhelming smell of gas. i could not stand tall in there. authorities have no idea where he is. christine. >> thanks nick. uber in big trouble in

cuomo and alisyn camerota. >> good morning. welcome to "new day." it is thursday july 16th. we have breaking news. former president george h.w. bush in the hospital this morning. the 91-year-old breaking a bone in his neck after falling at his summer home in maine. the patriarch is said to be stable but suffers from parkinson's disease. he has had several health scarce in the past several years. let's good morning, chris. aids say president george h.w. bush is in the hospital in portland maine and still there this morning. he took a fall breaking a vertebrae in his neck. his spokesman tweeting quote, his condition is stable. he is fine but he will be in a neck brace. now over the years we have seen many photos of the former president skydiving, jumping out
of helicopters, most recently just last year on his 90th birthday. but bush is the oldest living president and battled his health in the past. last year he was hospitalized for shortness of breath. in 2012 he was in the hospital for two months with a bronchitis-related cough. and he does have parkinson's disease and is wheelchair-bound. last week bush made an appearance at many events in maine with hundreds of donors to his son jeb bush's presidential campaign, but he did miss his son's big campaign announcement when he declared he was running for president in june. his wife attended that announcement without him. >> selma, thank you for all that. we'll bring in dr. roshini raj who is contributing medical editor for "health" magazine. dr. raj, thank you for being here. president bush broke a bone in his neck. that sounds serious?
