numbers. and a desperate search off the coast of florida. two teens missing. boat recovered, but no signs of the boys. good morning. welcome to "early start." it is monday july 27th. 5:00 a.m. in the east. christine romans is off today. happening now. history unfolding in africa. president obama becoming the first sitting u.s. president to visit ethiopia. you are looking at pictures from a minutes ago. he is meeting with the ethiopian prime minister. the top of the agenda is fighting the terror group al shabaab and human rights violations by ethiopian leaders. the president's visit follows a two-day trip to his father's homeland in kenya. let's get the latest from robyn kreil in abba ababa.
>> reporter: the prime minister and president obama also in the meeting with the commerce secretary and national security advisor susan rice signaling the trade between the two countries as well as security cooperation in terms of south sudan and civil war there and fighting al shabaab, the militant group. of course, al shabaab attacked a hotel yesterday in mogadishu neighboring ethiopia. we are not sure if that was a clear signal to president obama or if there was a reason behind that attack. it was an upscale hotel. the palace hotel where a number of people were killed. it is a target against westerners. there are a number of internationals that stayed interest. the kenyan embassy and qatar
embassy and egyptian embassy state leaders stay there. this is the progress they have been allowed to make since al shabaab was pushed out of mogadishu since 2011. there has been a lot of fighting in southern somalia which the united states has been involved in as well providing cover for africa union troops providing direct cover for the troops as they take the stronghold and a number of the strongholds, including the headquarters for al shabaab which they held for the last seven years. >> robyn, thank you. new polls show donald trump on top of the republican field. the latest cnn poll he runs ahead of jeb bush and overcoming a dust-up with john mccain. trump says there is a reason why he is number one. let's get more from cnn's sunlen
serfaty. >> reporter: this poll shows that donald trump is not just a hiccup in this race. right now, he is the national front runner among the republicans. it is important to know the poll was made after the comments of senator mccain and shows he increased republican support. there are certainly red flags for him. his unfavorability ratings are a problem for him. 80% of democrats have an unfavorable view of him. 53% of independents and 42% among republicans. despite this the poll numbers making it clear he is a factor in the race. trump likely will feel very emboldened by that. saying sunday on "state of the union" he believes leaders of the rnc are starting to warm up to him. >> they view me as an outsider and now viewing me as not an outsider because i'm leading in
the polls. i think they have been nice. they are starting to see what is happening. there's a movement going on. this is more than me. this is a movement. people are tired of the incompetent politicians. >> reporter: the trademark of trump's is attracting voters. in the poll he is the candidate voters want to see on the debate stage. he is ahead of bush and rubio and cruz. the first debate is ten days away. trump has started to downplay expectation expectations. he has no debate experience and predict other candidates will come out swinging for him. >> sunlen serfaty, downplaying expectations. how about name calling? when it comes to name calling, the top strategy for the rnc says knock it off. this is communications director

developments in the battle against isis. turkey calling for a rare emergency meeting of nato nations topmorrow. this follows the attack that killed 32 civilians last week. this is the fifth time that members will meet under article 4. countries call for consultations when their territory is threatened. cnn's jomana karadsheh is live in jordan. jomana turkey resisted this move for so long but they are in and calling for the rare nato session. >> reporter: absolutely john. very dramatic events taking place in turkey over the past week. this violence we have seen shaking that nation. as you mentioned, turkey calling for the nato meeting that will convene in brussels on tuesday as we have heard.
you mentioned this is an article 4 meeting. a rare meeting. it has only happened the fifth time it happened in the history of the organization. four times in the past have been called for by turkey. once in 2003 over iraq and over syria in 2012. member nations feel they call when territory or security is under threat. what they usually do is brief other nato members on what action they are taking. what military operations are taking place and also have consultations with other nato members. now it is unclear if turkey is expecting any sort of outcome out of this meeting. if it will be asking for anything. not much of a surprise considering the dramatic change in turkey's position over the past few days when it comes to the battle against isis. turkey for the first time
launching air strikes in isis positions in northern syria and opening up air bases to the u.s.-led coalition for the first time. something the u.s. and other nations have been calling for for some time. at the same time it is fighting on another front. after several attacks, turkey launching air strikes against the kurdish workers party, pkk, in the stronghold of the mountains. turkey and the pkk have a long bloody history. three decades of fighting that ended with a cease-fire in 2013 and now with the changes in the situation that cease-fire is over. a lot of concern, john that turkey's aggressive action in this case against isis and the pkk, could lead to retaliatory attacks by both groups. >> it will be interesting to see how they respond. jomana karadsheh, thank you. what do you get when you

ethiopian prime minister. topping the agenda fighting al shabaab, the civil war in south sudan and alleged human rights violations. this follows the two-day trip to his father's homeland in kenya. let's get the latest from robyn kreil in abba ababa. >> reporter: bilateral talks with the president and the prime minister. he is also flanked by susan rice and the commerce secretary. those are the people involved in the talks today. he will talk to the prime minister regarding human rights violations in ethiopia. the ruling party in ethiopia won 100% of the votes.
many of the opposition parties saying that was not a clear indication of what was on the ground. we expect the president will not shy away from the topics despite the smiles reported between the two leaders when the bilaterals began. in most places american aircraft are likely to deliver drone strikes than president. this was different when president obama dropped truth bombs. we heard the "truth bombs" going head-to-head with the prime minister talking gay rights which the president called a non issue. and president obama discussed women's rights. because something is a tradition on the african continent doesn't make it right. he has not been mincing his words.

911 calls capturing two sides of road rage in florida. a man gunned down in front of his family after going head-to-head with a driver on the road. the ordeal could have been prevented if the man listened to the 911 dispatcher. nick valencia has more. >> reporter: the incident on thursday afternoon in citrus county florida, when robert doyle and can gonzalez were on
the phone reporting 911 about the erratic driving. gonzalez can be heard he will follow doyle home. 911 advises him not to go. he does it any way. when he gets outside of doyle's residence, two minutes after the encounter began, shots were fired. doyle can be heard on his 911 tape telling police he has a gun. >> my gun is out. cocked and loaded. >> reporter: things turned violent. shooting and killing gonzalez. doyle essentially held gonzalez's family hostage. two children in the car under the age of 10 years old. >> i don't know how many times he hit. he fired multiple times. the guy kept charging at him. >> they are coming as fast as they can. >> reporter: when the police eventually arrived, doyle was arrested and taken into custody and charged with second-degree
murder and three counts of assault. i asked the investigators if it complicates the investigation that they told the victim not to pursue the alleged shooter. what i was told by the captain is that doyle had the opportunity to not engage the victim and had the chance to go inside his home. for now, doyle has posted his $60,000 bond and is out of police custody. we called him and his family and they have not returned our calls. john. nick thank you so much. the boy scouts of america setting a long standing ban on adult gay leaders. the board is expected to vote today. under the new policy church led groups can limit gays joining leadership positions. the church groups will choose adult leaders quote whose beliefs are consistent with their own. the hall of fame in cooperstown welcoming four new members in one of the greatest
