we have new information and reaction from the victims' families ahead. a man armed with a pellet gun and hatchet attacks audience members. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. it is thursday august 6th. it is debate day in america. it has been three years without a single presidential debate. how have we made it? we get to celebrate with donald trump. he and others face-off in cleveland at 7:00 p.m. others on the card at 5:00 p.m. let's get the latest from dana bash in cleveland. >> reporter: john and christine, i know you are both big sports fans. you recognize this behind me. the locals call it the q. the arena where lebron james plays basketball now. it is the arena where the first republican debate is going to take place. it is going to be like nothing we have ever seen when it comes to political debates.

we have never seen a billionaire reality tv star at center stage. the candidates have been in town. they have been prepping. they have been going over policies and going over the one liners and zingers trying to figure out how to break through. even though 10 of the 17 on the debate stage primetime, it is hard to get your message across when you are one of ten, especially on the outside flanks. some of the campaign sources inside have been telling me they will try to seize on the opportunity. the outsider status. one candidate's aide who is a senator, told me he is an outsider because he hasn't been there that long and he will add up the number of years everyone has been in elected office. that is the thing that nobody wants to hear about if you are really pushing for an outsider

or non politician like donald trump. unclear how that will be able to carry the day when you have so many candidates and you have the trump factor and the bush factor. donald trump may be the most entertaining but jeb bush has the most to lose. he has the $100 million plus in his account that major donors and republican establishment gave him from all over the cop country. he has to prove it is worth it. he has had some stumbles this week. he has to show he has shaken off the cob webs for being out of the game for almost ten years and he has the fire in the belly which people are still saying we're not so sure he has. that is the tip of the iceberg for tonight. john and christine. >> thanks dana. there are new details this morning about how fox news plans

to run the main debate. arena holds 20,000 people but there will only be 4,500 people in the audience tonight selected by lottery. the candidates will not give opening statements. the hosts will dive into questions with one-minute answers. candidates called out by name get 30 seconds to rebut. the american public will ask questions submitted through facebook. the new york times reports 100 questions have been prepared. half of which will get asked. for candidates who run over time fox news is considering replacing the desk bell ding sound with the cavaliers shot clock buzzer. >> if you get a slam dunk, the crowd does an standing ovation. and clinton/trump intrigue. a clinton aide confirmed to cnn that the former president returned a trump call in may.

the french laboratory. what are they looking for on the wreckage and which clues will help zero in on how the plane went down? >> reporter: good morning, christine. lots more tests to be run today. they must have come in pretty early this morning because they are already inside the facility. what kind of tests do they plan to run? sonograms and x-rays and 3d imagery. all of the technology they have at the toulouse lab. they are likely to pull the piece apart. we were not given the details of what is happening today. last night, we heard as you mentioned from the prime minister of malaysia a very confident confirmation saying they have conclusively determined this flaperon belongs to mh-370.

the prosecutor, of course used a more measured tone. here is what the deputy prime minister warnren truss had to say. >> we know this wreckage comes from a boeing 777. this part does not fit any other aircraft. we are aware the manufacture time is about consistent with when the aircraft operating mh-370 was actually constructed. of course, there are still some i's not dotted and t's not crossed. there is an element of doubt. the french are being cautious. from the malaysians they are now satisfied the body of evidence is sufficient to say this is wreckage from mh-370. >> reporter: and that disparity between the french and

malaysians may well be simply between the prime minister speaking to a nation and to the passengers on board and a french prosecutor who is running a manslaughter case. it may well be he has to err on the side of caution because of legalese and wants more tests. those dotting the i's and crossing the t's will happen today. they may come in weeks or months to come. we will hopefully find out this does belong to mh-370 as was announced last night and how that plane potentially went down and whether that piece came away in the air or whether it hit the sea in the southern indian ocean. christine. >> saima, thank you for that. the search for more wreckage continues. thank you. for many of the family members who lost loved ones, this brings little comfort. one woman said it's just a

flaperon it doesn't mean anything. let's go to malaysia right now and bring in cnn's andrew stevens. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, john. i think it is fair to say there has been a lot of distrust. the trust has broken down with the families and malaysian authorities. particularly malaysian airlines. we saw the distrust again today. particularly in china. chinese have been very angry with many facets of the investigation. particularly at the beginning with twists and turns as to what happened to mh-370. when the information came out from the malaysian prime minister at 1:45 in the morning in kuala lumpur, the reaction in beijing, among some family members was very strong. listen to this. >> translator: i am suspicious of malaysia airline because they have a track record of going back and forth in what they say

of being true and not true. what i hope right now is for the chinese officials to give me a confirmed answer. >> translator: i don't believe it. i'm furious and i think this announcement is very irresponsible. >> reporter: interesting listening to the chinese asking for their own government to give them an official answer. the government has been prompting the malaysians into more action. they did it again today. the ministry of foreign affairs in beijing saying they want the malaysian authorities to fulfill the duties to the families of the passengers. here in malaysia john the reaction hasn't been and strong but an overwhelming sense of disappointment. saying why did the prime minister have to say this so definitively now? when the french seem to be edging just a bit away from that definitive statement. why wouldn't the government left it until we have absolute truth.

moshin near toulouse. saima, what are we learning about what may have been on the ground? >> reporter: good morning. breaking news here christine, from afp agency which is the french pressor. the malaysian transportation minister believes we have also found debris like window panes and seat cushions where the wreckage from mh-370 was found. the wreckage he is referring to is the flaperon being tested now. he added to afp that the wreckage they found, the new debris will be tested by french authorities. now we know from before the practice before has been it has left reunion island flown to paris and then brought down by road to toulouse. it is the french authorities,

christine, that will have to determine what this is exactly. is it from an aircraft? is it from flight mh-370? it is the french authorities because reunion island is french territory. of course the french are leading the investigation here in toulouse. there is also a manslaughter case. i hope want to repeat. breaking news debris which includes what is believed to be a window pane seat cushions and foil has been found on reunion island. authorities have collected it and they are likely to be flying it to france to this laboratory for testing. it is french authorities that have to confirm this debris is from an aircraft and from flight mh-370. we do not know that yet. this is afp reporting this having spoken to the malaysian transportation minister. john. >> to be blunt, saima, what are the complicating factors? sometimes the malaysian

officials are not in concert with what the international community and other investigators are saying. we have a stringer on reunion island saying police sources say no debris has been reported or handed in today and nothing definitive has been turned in during the past week. there is an occasion of officials getting out in front of the investigation. the malaysian prime minister said the flaperon was definitely from mh-370. others saying probably but not ready to give a definitive answer yet. >> reporter: that is what is can confusing myself and the team here. there is a discrepancy, of course between the different bodies involved. first of all, there are so many bodies involved. the united states ntsb chinese open officials and australian and french and yes, disparity between who says what and who seems to jump the gun.
