let's begin with breaking news overnight. jeb bush firing back in the feud with donald trump over whether george w. bush kept us safe or bears responsibility for the 9/11 attacks. in the interview, bush says this proves trump doesn't understand the threats that face america around the world. >> his view of history is wrong. when we were attacked, my brother created an environment we were safe. no one attacked us again. he changed the laws. he united the country and kept us safe. just a tip of the hat to that and moving on to the threats today is what we should focus on. donald trump is not a serious candidate as it relates to foreign policy. >> earlier in the day, trump fired off the taunts, including a tweet, jeb is fighting to defend a catastrophic event.
i'm fighting to make sure it doesn't happen again. jeb is too soft. a new poll showing a high water mark for trump. trump led with the highest share of the nbc/wall street journal poll at 25%. bush at 8%. this is what trump talked about on the trail in south carolina. cnn's sara murray was there. >> reporter: good morning. in front of thousands in south carolina, donald trump slammed his dpgop rivals and talked abo president obama wanting to take away american's guns. >> we are all heavy on the second amendment. you know the president's thinking about signing an executive order where he wants to take your guns away. this is the new -- not going to happen. that won't happen. that's a tough one for him to do
when you actually have the second amendment, that's tough. there's plenty of executive orders being signed. you know that. we can't let that go on. >> reporter: what he didn't mention was the latest. after suggesting that george w. bush was responsible for 9/11, donald trump doubled down on twitter. he made no mention here tonight. a line that many voters felt was unfair against the former president. they did not say it ultimately swayed their decision to vote for trump or not. back to you, john. thank you, sara. i think donald trump will be on "new day." not dodging questions very long. always another interview. new signs that joe biden may be close to running for president. a source close to his camp says
he is interviewing associated for campaign jobs. >> i'm the late joe biden. i just want you to know as much as i love you, i have been in a meeting with the president on another matter for the last two hours. it is hard to say mr. president, you're on your own. i'm leaving. although he is on his own. he doesn't need me. >> meeting another matter. one house member tweeted, i have a very good source close to joe that tells me vp biden will run for prez. biden would enter the race thifthird in the polls behind hillary clinton and bernie sanders. bernie sanders on a campaign swing through iowa.
cnn's sunlen serfaty has more. >> reporter: bernie sanders is having a moment in the pop culture spotlight and having fun with it on the campaign trail. noting all of this attention he has been getting from the "saturday night live" treatment he received. the equivalent to campaign gold. i caught up with bernie sanders on the iowa campaign trail. i asked him if he expects to receive a bump in the polls from larry david. >> well, i'm giving serious thought. larry david does bernie sanders better than bernie sanders does. maybe we'll invite him to the next rally. we have gained on it. we have done better since the last poll. i think that frankly the momentum is with us. there was a poll that came out in new hampshire today that had us ahead.
you know, i freely concede that we started off this campaign and i was at 3% in the polls. and people thought i was a fringe candidate. we made a lot of progress in the last five months. we have a real shot to win this. >> reporter: that continues to be one of the biggest challenges for bernie sanders to do from being seen as a fringe candidate to more of a mainstream candidate to appeal to a broad number of voters. what is key here is this is a challenge for the sanders campaign in the moment to turn the attention that is focused on him to actual support. john and christine. thank you, sunlen. john, this is your sixth election? >> i lost track. >> think about the timing for joe biden. not a declared candidate is trailing bernie sanders. >> one of the most interesting numbers in the poll that came out yesterday morning. fewer democratic voters are supportive of a biden run today than they were a month ago.
that has dropped. did he miss his moment? >> what i keep hearing is bill clinton. bill clinton in 1992. it was late in the fall. >> it was a different case. he was never not running. he officially announced. it wasn't like he was making a big decision. >> is there precedent for starting a run so late? >> in the modern era? no. he is a sitting vice president. that comes with a huge amount of power and possibility to jump in. it is impossible to know. this year is an unpredictable year. >> up is down. down is up. night is day. day is night. >> there's jim webb. >> in hours we will know if he is dropping out of the democratic presidential derby in favor of an independent run. he has a news conference set for
