i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. it is monday, august 1st. 99 days to go until the presidential election. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. we have unprecedented beginning to the general election campaign this morning with donald trump facing an unprecedented controversy. locked in a face-off with the parents of a muslim-american soldier killed fighting overseas. khizr khan and his wife were behind the dramatic moment last week in the democratic national convention. challenging trump's american values. trump's response this weekend shocked many. even within his own party. overnight, his running mate stepped in to try to calm the storm. we have kristen holmes with latest from washington. >> reporter: john and christine, donald trump is taking heat from all sides after lashing out at the parents of a fallen american hero. khizr khan honoring his son on

the democratic national convention stage said trump sacrificed nothing. trump responded. >> i made a lot of sacrifices. i work very hard. i created thousands and thousands of jobs. tens of thousands of jobs. when i can employ thousands and thousands of people and take care of their education and so many things. >> reporter: khan hit back during an interview on "state of the union" telling jim acosta, he hoped trump's family would teach him empathy. here is more. >> this person is total incapable of empathy. i want his family to counsel him. teach him some empathy. he will be a better person if he could become, but he is a black soul and this is totally unfit for the leadership of the beautiful country. >> reporter: donald trump suggested that khan's wife, ghazala, stood next to her husband, did not take the mike,

but was not allowed to speak. the gold star mother fired back. saying walking on the convention stage with the huge picture of my son behind me, i could hardly control myself. what mother could? donald trump has children whom he is loves. does he really need to wonder why i did not speak? republican senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, one of many republicans distancing from trump's comments issuing a statement praising captain khan calling him a true american hero. adding he agreed with the star family, saying a ban on travel is contrary to american values. thank you. mike pence has a son in the marines. he issued a statement calling captain khan a hero. he added by suspending immigration by countries with

terrorism, and protecting strength on the global stage, we will reduce the likelihood other american families will reduce the heartbreak. donald trump on the presidential debates. he wants two of the three debates rescheduled. he says the debates fall on the same night as nfl games. trump tweeted that hillary clinton and the democratic party are trying to rig the debates by minimizing audience. the clinton campaign called the remarks malarky. they were scheduled out the input of the campaigns or parties. the commission which organizes the debates said the commission on presidential debates started working 18 months ago to identify religious and holidays and nfl games and other events to select the best nights for the 2016 debates. there have been nights on which games and debates have occurred

in most election cycles. a debate has never been rescheduled. >> let's talk about the action in the campaign. a lot of it right now. let's bring in political reporter eugene scott. he is in washington. eugene, i want to start with what is dominating the headlines. the battle that donald trump finds himself in with the parents of this soldier killed in iraq. the khan family. they spoke at the convention last week. they electrified the convention. part of what has caused to reignite the controversy. this four-day controversy is how trump first responded. he had an interview with maureen dowd. then with george stepanopolous. >> his wife was standing there. maybe she did not have anything to say. plenty of people have written that. she was extremely quiet. and it looked like she had

nothing to say. a lot of people have said that. >> donald trump questioning the silence of gold star mother. she lost her son in battle 12 years ago. democrats and republicans and veterans were shocked to hear that. >> very much so. it is not really easy to offend veteran families and come off as misogynistic. the mother of the fallen soldier not able to share her heart. the reality is it is difficult to speak publicly period. if you are not a public speaker, must less to speak about losing one's child. i think the khan family would say they got their message heard. the mother got her voice heard in that op-ed in the washington

post. it provided context and perhaps she would not provided the night of her husband's speech. >> she said it was an emotional experience to see that giant picture of her son on the stage behind her. she was just trying to get through. you know? she lost her son. a gold star mother. i have to ask you, does this controversy. how does he tamp this down? does he try? we have seen donald trump before. his m.o. is to double down and triple down. >> it depends on who he is trying to win. at this point, we know hillary clinton and donald trump are going for independent voters. so in going for independent voters, he is probably going to be softer than he has been in attracting his base. so whether or not he responds differently to what he already has will be based on how he thinks he is doing in the polls and push back he is received.

he has received quite a bit of push back from republican leaders. on my social media, i saw a few donald trump supporters. saying if the khan family did not want to get involved in a political situation, they should not have spoken. >> let me read you the criticism. jeb bush says this is incredibly disrespectful of the family who endured the ultimate sacrifice. he calls out donald trump by implication. paul ryan taking a different tact. captain khan was one such brave example. he and his family should always be honored period. khizr khan has challenged paul ryan and mitch mcconnell to come out and stand up against what

donald trump said specifically. he called donald trump out by name. ryan doesn't quite do that here. mitch mcconnell has similar statements. they are going only so far here. it creates a political cunundrum here. >> cleaning up messes for donald trump is not new. i think the republican party leadership is still sensitive to the base of donald trump supporters feeling like they are not on board with the candidate. it seems like they are very selective and guarding when they push back. if it calls to respond increase, it will be interesting to see if paulyan is aggressive. >> donald trump has a couple of campaign spots today. brian stelter says it will be interesting to see the tone from

donald trump today. you look at gop officials distancing themselves from donald trump. this has been the hallmark of the campaign, really. the question is will this be different for trump? >> that is the question. i remember the day trump made the comments about senator mccain. we thought that would be a significant negative impact on the campaign. we see that is not the case. that is donald trump who let us know his supporters are with him come hell or high water. >> megan mccain, john mccain's daughter. i ask what kind of barbarian would attack the parents of a fallen soldier. it is the same person who attacks a p.o.w. it gives you a sense of how trump is beginning the general election going forward. it will be interesting to see how he addresses it.

november? watch the stock market starting today. the direction the s&p moves during august, september and october has done a great job predicting presidential elections since world war ii. stocks rise 82% of the time, the party in control of the white house currently wins. the economy is growing and the stock market is doing well. people think good times will continue. they are likely to stick with the same presidential party. if they are fearful, stocks fall and voters want new leadership. august will start with gains. dow futures higher. stocks in asia and europe are up. i love stock market predictors. every pattern is a pattern until it is not. there are always people betting against the pattern. look at brexit. markets said no one would be crazy enough to vote for the uk to secede. it is a funky year.

trail in pennsylvania and ohio and we see polls after the democratic convention. we know that donald trump has been able to repel the sorts of stories that would hurt or doom other candidates. i don't know if we can say this time is different yet. >> one sign you can tell, when you generally tell when donald trump is in the middle of a controversy that is hard to dig out, he is getting criticism from his own party. jeb bush made it clear he will not vote for trump. this is so incredibly disrespectful of the family that endured the ultimate sacrifice. lindsey graham and megan mccain. paul ryan issued a carefully worded statement. many muslim-americans served in our military and made the ultimate sacrifice. captain khan was a brave example. his sacrifice should always be

honored. what is interesting here, paul ryan is refusing to criticize donald trump specifically. he is coming out in support of the khans and there are buzz words. some dog whistles here for people paying attention. he is talking about sacrifice. he says his sacrifice and the ultimate sacrifice. meaning that of khan and the khan parents. donald trump said he sacrificed a lot in building his businesses, but paul ryan seems to be drawing a distinction of the sacrifices here. >> i agree with brian. the democrats were trying to bait donald trump. everyone knows donald trump made zachasac sacrifices. in that moment, he compared his sacrifices to the parents who lost their son in a war. the optics of that don't look

good. we all know not all sacrifices are equal. donald trump failed to acknowledge that in his response. >> this is where comedians see an opening. monday morning. all of the late night shows will talk about this. john oliver talked about this issue of sacrifices. then he said this about trump. >> obviously the main take away from the two weeks is we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged sociopathic narcissist may beyond his capabilities. i did not think that was a part of the job that someone could be bad at. >> it is obviously harsh from oliver. he is a liberal leaning comedian. it is a taste of what we will see from others later today. >> megan mccain. i would ask what kind of barbarian would attack the parents of a fallen soldiers year. oh, yeah.

it is the same person who attacks p.o.w.s. here is my question. judge curiel. calling mexican immigrants rapists. donald trump has only moved forward and built his momentum during the entire campaign. what is the thing, eugene, that is the final straw for donald trump? or is it that all of this just plays with his voting base? >> donald trump has been very clear, christine, that there is no final straw with his most loyal supporters. he said he could shoot someone in the middle of the street in new york city and still maintain support from some people. i know that is a very extreme example, but some people are not giving him a second look or backing away from him even in the midst of the situation in part because they believe the democrats have played politics and using the khan family. everything is very partisan right now. people cannot see past their

personal politics and look at the issues individually. >> brian stelter, i'm reading my twitter feed right now. some trump supporters are calling us shills. we're also hearing from liberals from the left saying you are playing into trump's hands by just letting him eat up this air time and focusing on controversy after controversy. you can't please anybody at something like this. when a presidential nominee, he is now the republican nominee. when he says things and does things are unusual and unprecedented in a campaign setting, you have to point it out. >> we saw the interview you played clips from. a lot of people saw that and thought he stepped in a lot of pits and hit a lot of land mines. talking about ukraine and crimea and russia.

as much as the press is giving trump an enormous amount of attention, it is an enormous amount of scrutiny applied. >> there will be a couple of campaign events for donald trump today. it will be important to see how he reacts. the washington post op-ed. this is from ghazala khan responding to the statement from donald trump on abc. she said maybe i wasn't allowed to say anything? that is not true. i told my husband i could not speak. she had a huge picture of her son on the stage. trump is talking about islam. he is ignorant. if he studied the real islam and koran, all of his ideas would change. he doesn't know what the word sacrifice means. >> more than 6,000 comments on that op-ed. i cannot imagine the last time i saw that many comments on that article. this is such an emotional and

evocative story. >> i was going to say one thing that was interesting with the push back that donald trump has received how he responded with the soldier's mother. the optics of him attacking a war mother are not playing well for those supportive of trump. when people say the media is playing into trump's plans. this is notable because this is a situation where veterans and the republican leaders are attacking donald trump. these are people who are pro-trump. it is notable when your side finds things you say problematic. >> eugene and brian, thank you. hillary clinton scoring a big endorsement from mark cuban. >> leadership is creating
