11:00 am
sometimes they will be crying because they are so happy. >> reporter: i am too. looking forward, seeing upwards of 10,000 people a day visiting the country's newest treasure chest of american history. i will find out tonight what that is going to be like. the museum opens next saturday, september 24th. the next hour of the "cnn newsroom" starts right now. hello again, we are following breaking news. i'm fredricka whitfield. we are now learning an explosion along a race route in seaside park new jersey was caused by multiple devices. it went off near the marine charity 5 k run. there were multiple timed devices but only one detonated.
11:01 am
>> the u.s. marines were supposed to have this sempi phi charity run. the start of the race fortunately was delayed. that explosion took place along the run route. it was on "d" street at ocean avenue. because of that delay, there probably would have been a good number of people running past that crash can when it went off. we had no injuries and no damage to any other structures. >> what was found inside that crash can? >> what they are telling me was it was a pipe bomb type device. there were multiple boxes wired together. they are examining the additional boxes and making them safe. we have evacuated a four block area around that perimeter to make sure no issues to any individuals that live within
11:02 am
that area. >> reporter: you said multiple devices wired together. how many devices are we talking about? >> i have been told anywhere from 2 to 3 additional. >> paul: bomb type devices wired together to the additional explosion that went off. that won't be specifically able to say until the investigation continues. >> reporter: are investigators treating this as a remote or timed detonation of this device to coincide with the run thaers we runners that are supposed to be running past the area when it went off. >> what the intentions are, we don't know at this point, whether it is criminal or terroristic. it was obviously meant to affect the run, the fact that it went off at 9:35. >> reporter: any other devices found alongside the route? >> right after the incident took place, immediately put the air
11:03 am
why on lockdown. they brought in bomb dogs. no additional devices. they are continuing without a hitch. in this area until the bomb squad gives us the all-clear, in terms of that garbage pail, we are going to keep things closed off. >> reporter: it is saturday, a beautiful day. people are being kept off the beach in seaside park. when will that be lifted? >> it is a shame that charitable run that does such great things for the marines is now canceled. there is no word fon it will be rescheduled. that's where we are right now. >> reporter: do you believe this was a deliberated targeted attack towards our military and their families here in ocean county and seaside park? >> i think we can assume that, considering the location device right along the run route.
11:04 am
there could have been a good number of people along that area. >> reporter: do you consider this a terrorist situation? >> we have a real good number of partners, the local ocean county sheriff's department to help us gather as much information as possible. >> we have two people with us, cnn crime and justice producer, shimon prokapetz and cnn law enforcement expert, tom fuentes. >> multiple devices, one goes off. >> what and how do you assess
11:05 am
this. >> the race got delayed and you didn't have a street full of runners in close proximity to the garage can that blew up. only one of the devices detonated. had all the two or three devices gone off together and had runners been nearby, we could have had fatalities or at least serio serious injures. >> shimon, what are you learning? >> the devices appear to be metal. sometimes we talk about pipe bombs. they could be pvc, like plastic. this appears to be metal. they are now in the process of working through the other devices and still trying to figure out what they have here. i have heard different descriptions of the devices.
11:06 am
the latest guidance was that they appear to be metal, multiple sort of metal pipes it appears only one went off. whoever did it probably wanted to cause some harm and they would not have detonated this. they think it was on a timing. they are still working through it. it is going to be a little pains taking. they have to be careful. bomb squad working. they are sort of trying to be careful and they have to watch for their own safety and to make sure nothing explodes while they are working on it.
11:07 am
what kind of explosives they are dealing with or material is in these bombs. the main focus is that. >> very early stages of the investigation here, to hear that type of information from shimon that there were metal pieces. of course, you hear about that ethatex explosive devices. our minds go to the boston marathon and pressure cooker device that is were homemade. how will investigators move forward on the origins of this bomb-making. knowing there is a metal component here. >> reporter: they will be trying to look at how it was assembled and if nair are other similar broms detonated or neutralized in the past that are made in the same fashion.
11:08 am
if they are pipe bombs, that's easy to make. if someone has a rude men tary knowledge, they could put that together. they will learn that shortly, whether it could be detonated with a cell phone. the components that were not exploded will be easily examined as well. the other thing they will be looking at closely will be any claims or threats put out on social media preceded the race or in the aftermath, someone ha is frying to take credit for. trying to get their 15 minutes of fame. even though it didn't hurt anybody, at least it went off.
11:09 am
>> one more time on this multiple device, it seems a little confusing to hear. there are multiple devices and some are wired together. are we talking about multiple devices, meaning they are scattered in different geographic cal locations along this presumed run route? >> i am not getting the sense this is all along the route. there are multiple devices along the route. i think this is all contained to one area, this garbage can. it had all the devices in it. one area, one location along the route where they found the other devices attached. the way it was described to me, i know the one occasion who we spoke to on the air said they were wired together. i haven't heard that description from anyone. all i keep hearing is multiple devices put together. i don't know how they were put together. they were all in one area.
11:10 am
