tv Campaign 2020 NH Democratic Party Convention - Joe Biden CSPAN September 9, 2019 11:39am-11:49am EDT
>> now portions from this past weekend new hampshire democratic party convention met in manchester here from the democratic presidential candidates. we begin with remarks from joe biden and then south bend indiana mayor the judge, senator, harris and former congressman o'rourke. >> hello new hampshire. great to be here. thank you, thank you. they tell me about 10 minutes so i'm better going. my name is joe biden and i'm here for dd shopping. and to defeat donald trump.
full, you all know in your bones this election is different than any you'veever face . this president has unleashed the deepest, darkest forces in this nation. he assigned a moral equivalence between those dealing hate and those with the courage to stand against it. i say that as we saw those folks on the field carrying torches in charlottesville that we are in a battle or the soul of this nation and we are. that's why i'm running for president . [applause] we have to rebuild , we have to rebuild this nation. we have to rebuild it. the middle class is being crushed, the poor are getting poorer and income equality is at an all-time high . made even worse the god-awful tax cuts that trump has passed benefiting virtually no one but the super wealthy.
folks, wall street did not build this country, you built this country. the middle-class built this country. and unions built the middle class. it's time we start to reward work over well. why in god's name should a nurse, a firefighter, a police officer, a teacher, why in god's name to make a one of the higher tax rates and someone making tens of millions of dollars. it's wrong and it will change in my administration. ladies and gentlemen, let's guarantee and we can, we can without a power guarantee every single solitary american that healthcare is a right and not a privilege. i will put around the affordable care act. which covers more than 20 million people, never covered
before never had it before, on good million people pre-existing conditions. now covered. we will go further. will provide a public option making surethat everyone , everyone if they don't like the plan they have and choose the public option and anyone, anyone who can't afford it will automatically be enrolled, anyone qualifying for medicaid. ladies andgentlemen, we have to make sure people have access , access to mental health services and affordable prescription drugs which i do provide for. and as time we remake the american education system. the fact of the matter is the republicans say they care about education. my dad used to say don't tell me your value, show meyour budget . they clearlydo not value education . i would triple the amount of the money we spend on title i , increasing distress from 15
to 45 billion a year, it would provide raises for teachers making sure every child of america, three, four and five years old and go to pre-k, preschool and real school, increasing the prospect of success dramatically, making sure that education is available beyond high school every single person in the country wants to go on to a trade school wants to go on and get a certificate for community college, it should be freeand we can afford it . we can afford it now. folks, for one of the greatest crisis of our time is climatechange . we must get this under control. ladies and gentlemen i would immediately call for a $400 billion increase in funding or alternatives, new science and technology that will put us down to net zero emissions by 2050. and i will immediately,
immediately rejoin the paris climate accords which are administration put together because the rest of the world is accountable for 85 percent of the problem and we need to leave them and there's no leadership now . our president isn't up to this moment, we all know that. he lacks the moral authority to lead, this president had more in common with george wallace and george washington and ladies and gentlemen, we have 330 million americans that have to do what this president can't do. stand together. dad up against this god-awful situation we face with him as president. stand up for our best, what our nation believes. we believe inhonesty, decency, treating everyone with dignity and respect . giving everyone a fair shot,
leaving no one behind getting hate no safe harbor. demonizing no one. not the poor, thepowerless, the immigrants, the other . most importantly, leading not by the example ofour power but by the power of our example as we always have . being part of somethingbigger than ourselves , it's the american code, it's who we are and president trump does not get. america is an idea. it's an idea that is stronger thanany army . in any ocean and more powerful than any dictator or tyrant. it gives hope to the hopeless. and not only are our values under attack, our very democracy is. we've now learned nothing is guaranteed aboutdemocracy. we have to earn it . we have to protect it we have to fight for it . the most powerful idea in history of the world beats in the hearts of the people of
this country. it beaten all of us. the american creed. we hold these truths self-evident that all men and women are created. we the people are the most unique experiments in all the history of the world. and ladies and gentlemen, the genius of every generation up to this one with this president of every generation as we opened our arms wider and wider to include more and more people and thatare . that's why it's never gather dust in our history books. it's still alive today, more than 200 years after its inception. we cannot and i will not let this man the reelected president of the united states of america . limit it to four years. i believe history will look back on this presidency as an aberrant moment in time. and if donald trump is reelected, freudian slip.
if donald trump is reelected, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation. donald trump does pose an existential threat, it's not hypothetical. his threat to this nation. he does pose a real threat. the core values of this nation are our very democracy, everything that made america state and everyone knows who donald trump is, now we have to show them who we are. who we are and we choose hope over fear. we just science over fiction. we choose unity over division and yes, we choose truth overlies. folks, i've never been more optimistic about america's
chances then i am today. we are better positioned than any nation in the world to lead the 21st century. we have the world's most powerful economy . we have the greatest resource university in the world, more than all the rest of the world combined . we find ourselves with a workforce that three times as productive as the nation. ladies and gentlemen, it's time to get the hell up. it's time to not walk around with our heads down. this is the united states of america. we can do anything. anything all we set our minds to you anything. it's not hyperbole. we all have to learn about john kennedy's speech about going to the moon, the one line from that speech my friends have heard me with the over the years, i don't know how many times. that made the most sense to me. he said an answering the unspoken question why are we
doing this he said because we refuse to postpone. i used to postpone one more day taking back this country. the opportunities are amazing. we are in a position to be able to leave the world like we've never been able to do it before. ladies and gentlemen, we can do this this is our god bless you alland may god protect our troops . thank you. >>. [applause]
