tv First Lady Remarks on Toys for Tots CSPAN December 12, 2018 2:27am-2:40am EST
cspan. where history unfolds daily. in 1979, cspan was created as a public service by america's cable television company. and today, we continue to bring you unfiltered coverage of congress, the white house, the supreme court, and public- policy events on washington, d.c. and around the country. cspan is brought to you by your cable or satellite provider. for the holidays, first lady milani trump was at a military base in washington, d.c. to take part in the toys for tots toy drive. after giving brief remarks, the first lady met with some of the children who were involved with the event. >> well, merry christmas. how's everyone doing out here? okay? okay. well, i know these folks have been doing pretty good around here. i'm not too sure about that crowd to my left. welcome to all.
i'm lieutenant general pete ozment, the president and ceo of marine toys for tots and it's a pleasure to welcome all of you here today. i have the distinct honor of being able to introduce our first lady. before i do that, let me share a few thoughts with you about this year's campaign. as marines have been doing since 1947, we are out there collecting new toys and in order to help bring the joy of christmas and send a message of hope for america's less fortunate children. this year, we are conducting campaigns in over 800 big cities and small towns all across the country, covering all 50 states. this year, we have some extra challenges. i think we all know about the horrible fires that took place in california, the hurricanes that hit in the east coast and the gulf coast. obviously, that has increased the demand for toys and we are going to meet that demand. people often ask me, how do you do that? well, we do that through the generosity of the american public.
and we do it for the hard work of our marines and our tens of thousands of volunteers. and of course, our number one volunteer in the last 2 years has been our first lady, melania trump. what a champ she has been. i think we all know she has great affection for children and it really shows when she participates with marine toys for tots. when people see our first lady supporting our program, believe me, it sends a very, very strong signal to the american people, this is a great organization that we want to support. so we owe her a debt of thanks. so, ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the marine corps, all of us associated with the marine toys for tots program, and most importantly on behalf of the less fortunate children that will benefit from this program this year, we want to thank our first lady. please join me in welcoming our first lady, melania trump.
>> thank you. how are you? nice to see you. so, thank you for having me here. thank you, general osmond, for the kind introduction, and for all you do for this wonderful program. it is great to be here today. thank you all for helping in this very important cause. i have been looking forward to this event ever since last year's ended. as a mother, i feel children are the most precious gift of all. they provide so much joy in life. as first lady, i have made it my mission to shine a light on programs that provide more opportunities for children to succeed. by comparing the best, focusing
on the inspiring and life- saving work of people in organizations across our country. i believe in the good work that toys for tots is doing. their mission to send messages of hope to children, and help them grow into responsible and patriotic citizens and community leaders is so important to the society. so all those who pitch in to help in the race, large and small, every bit matters, and we thank you. i also thank all of our service members who have joined us today. my husband and i are grateful for your service. and to your families, we thank you for the sacrifices that each of you make in supporting our nation. i'm proud to be first lady of an administration that will always stand by our men and women in uniform. thank you to all the hard- working people at toys for tots
