tv   House GOP Leader Mc Carthy News Conference on Mueller Testimony  CSPAN  July 24, 2019 6:20pm-6:43pm EDT

6:20 pm
6:21 pm
good evening. today was a historical day. i listened to the speaker. it was a historical day because this is the day we close the book on this investigation. it is time that america turns the page. it is time for america to move forward. democrats have to stop wasting time trying to have a do over for 2016 presidential election. for more than two years democrats have obsessed about the mueller investigation. going as far as falsely accusing that they had evidence of collusion which we found not to
6:22 pm
be true today. it only helps to reinforce the facts, that there is no collusion and no obstruction. it is well past the time to put this country first. the democrats are more focused on bringing down the president then they are on building up america. we've gone through roughly 200 days of this democratic socialist majority. name one thing they have solved. we have a challenge on our border. we have a trade agreement that could hold more jobs to make america stronger and more prosperous but they will not bring it up. we have a challenge in our healthcare when it comes to surprise billing. thousands of americans. again they only focused on the mueller investigation. today is the end of that chapter to. today we put politics aside and put people first. put this country first.
6:23 pm
i'd like to call up our republican leader of the judiciary committee. >> thank you everyone. i think what was interesting today is they were painting a picture. the democrats say they want to paint a picture. when we start with today? let's paint a picture of today. but to be find out? he came here today and for anyone who wants to separate collusion and conspiracy, we put that to rest. that's a synonymous term and even in his report he said so. we put that to rest today. we are painting a picture. when they tried to paint a picture of talking about obstructions and putting green checkmarks beside it and when i asked about it mr. mueller says i disagree with your interpretation. what we are seeing is, it's really interesting because it was agreement on one thing but for an interference in the 2016 election. what has been the answer from
6:24 pm
my committee majority in german? to bring those bills-- no bills forward, no solutions forward. all we want to do is paint a picture of a president they despise. for 7 1/2 months that's all we've done in our committee. someone asked me how do you prepare? didn't have to worry about it because it's all the committee talked about for seven months. all we talk about. and everything we've come up with, dog and pony shows, running out old people from the watergate era and what have the we found? that the american people have been footing the bill for continuation of 2016 election they don't like. if we are going to paint a picture let's paint a picture of what's happening. the democratic majority that has no agenda and trouble bringing bills to the floor. i democratic majority were the very things that talk about, immigration election interference and others could be dealt with but they don't bring bills forward. even tomorrow we are going to
6:25 pm
have another hearing to talk about the problem on the border instead of fixing the problem. i challenge my colleagues, get over the election of 2016. run in 2020 if you want. the president has put forward a great economy and great ideas. quit trying to dredge up of it-- . mr. mueller did his job, presented a report and someone asked did you find out anything new? the answer is no. we've had the report for three months and mr. mueller simply said what was in the report. collusion, conspiracy, were over and the observations of obstruction by the democratic majority, he did not ascribe to the theory and neither did the american people. that's why we are fighting for real solutions instead of a continuation of the show. that's the picture painted today. >> i think what you see today is collusion between the republican party. when the
6:26 pm
trump campaign is over there was no evidence there was a dossier paid for by the clinton campaign. they collusion through british former mi six agents supposedly working with russian horses but didn't get any new information on that today. the democrats have refused to accept reality. they live in an alternative universe. so i think like we said today, this is over and hopefully this will be the end of these hearings because the house intelligence committee has important work to do. if you look at the national security, there's nothing more important than passing the united states mexico in canadian agreement that's ready to go. if you look at the situation on the border, that has to be dealt with. we have legislation that most of the house. democrats promised solutions to
6:27 pm
immigration and are not delivering it. to pressing issues not being dealt with. hopefully after today we will begin and when we get back in september to work on immigration reform and pass this very important trade agreement. >> the leader and my colleagues are right understand where we are at. three years ago next week is when the trump russia investigation began. the fbi investigated for 10 months. understand the big picture. fbi investigates for 10 months, they find nothing. we know that because jim calmly told us that. bob mueller takes over in 2017 and he investigates for two months. here we are three years later and bob mueller found no collusion conspiracy or coordination. it's definitely time to move on. the second thing i would say is
6:28 pm
the investigation that matters, and i said this in today's hearing, or the two of them. the one that mr. horowitz is going to have completed in a couple of months and the one that the atty. gen. has test john during the us attorney to do which is how this saga began that our country has lived through for these three years. i look forward to hearing from that but let's stop the continuous investigation into something that we've already spent three years on. it's focus on those issues that really matter to the american people. >> often answered with one word and sometimes didn't have total command of the details. you are confident that he was fully capable of running this investigation? what are the takeaways of his performance? >> they are trying to back channel that the performance
6:29 pm
wasn't good. for someone who ran an organization like he did, he had 488 pages and millions of documents. he had a command. he answer the questions as we went through them. the bottom line is that the democrats didn't like how he answer them so they are trying to find a way to salvage something and say that what we did today actually mattered and that they haven't been wasting people's time or money. the picture that was painted today though was a longtime investigator who simply laid the facts out and they just don't like it. >> the president is not totally exonerated. do you accept that according to what mueller said? >> you watched both intel and judiciary committee. we discussed the issue of exoneration and the theory that he will come out with is a novel theory but it's not something for him to exonerate which is a flip side to say there is not enough to find guilt. instead of going from the
6:30 pm
opposite end but she's not there to do, they are also saying he did not have enough to go forward. >> if i were the democrats and they just got done talking about it i would be frustrated as well because they have promised that the mueller investigation was the goal and would solve all their problems. the problem is they got to the end and they didn't-- what they wanted to tell pick >> the chairman of the intel committee lied to the public the last few years? he had evidence. >> we found that was not true. he had the investigations. you had the report. and today, you have the hearings. you have a chairman of the judiciary who ran for his chairmanship based on his own confidence that he would be the very best person for impeachment. this has been the goal but none of the evidence has panned out. the only people who have been hurt are the american public. i watched the press conference and their body language. i watched what they spoke of.
6:31 pm
they know this is not what they wanted to see today. it was not the answers they wanted to hear. even when they laid out the theory, mueller said no. i disagree. this should be the end of the chapter of this book that we put america through. it's time to solve the problems. i understand this majority has no agenda. i understand they can't pass something outside of a resolution but the american public expects more from this congress. it would be the best advice for these democrats to put the american public first and move forward through the issues. >> you are with the president today at the white house during the hearings. what was his mood and was he watching the hearings? what was his take? >> the president was working on issues. we were working on issues today. i think he cut some of it. he was very up the.
6:32 pm
i've watched him be up beat almost every single day. pres. trump, his cup is always half- full. to think with this poor president had to go through, if you set for three years and heard someone say a lie about you with each turn of the corner which gets proven correct, did anyone in the white house not come and testify? he had people on the other side actually lied to the american public ahead of the intel committee. that's the question that i have for the speaker of the house. knowing what she knows now, how can adam schiff still be chairman of a committee that we have to have trust in? we lied to the american public. >> the special counsel raise concerns that this could be the new normal as far as interference goes. he raised concerns about the president openly asking for
6:33 pm
help from wikileaks. if we want to talk about legislation would you support legislation that would tighten roles to make it clear that it's appropriate inappropriate and illegal? >> the majority came in and said we are going to have hearings. my committee is so paralyzed with their obsession with this president and they believe he should be impeached, that we don't have hearings. we don't have discussions anymore. some of our other mill members have put forward bills. we are not getting hearings in our committee. the very committee in which mr. mueller talked about about the threat to our existence, we are not putting bills together which tells me they are bankrupt about it or don't have to what to have hearings because they would rather have the narrative of taking down this president. all i'm saying is if you truly believe, you talk about love for america, but that would actually be doing legislations. i think that's what we could do and we would support if we
6:34 pm
could get them to have discussions. >> you support making it crystal clear that he cannot ask for help from wikileaks? >> i would revert back to the house republican report from last year. a year ago we put out 45 recommendations. i refer you to that report if you want to see things that could be done to guard the election system. >> go ahead jim. >> maybe tomorrow we should have a hearing on the very issues you're talking about, making sure the system is safe as possible but instead we're going to some tina employees for all of their emails. the democrats continue this as the leader said, when you are so focused on stopping the president it's tough to do what's best for the country and in your example, tufts to tough to do what's best for the election system. we would support moving ahead having bipartisan focus but the focus is on oversight and judiciary and going after the
6:35 pm
president and folks who work for him. >> i will tell you what we do work on. we will work with anyone who wants to make sure that this border is secure and resolve this crisis. as republican leader we will work on making sure the usmca that makes america stronger-- that gdp actually grows. we will gladly work on that tomorrow. >> we will work when it comes to healthcare to make surprise billing that the americas americans who get a surprise bill even though they are in network, we will work to solve that. the problem we have is that the majority controls what is happening in committees and none is that none of that has happened. the only thing that has happened this entire year is something to do to undercut the president. now it's time to build up america and turn the page. >> questions for all four of you. do you have no concerns about how the president conducted himself based on the mueller report? >> i do not. >> you that she's created
6:36 pm
millions of jobs, we've had the strongest economy we've had in 60 years. >> potential obstruction of justice from which he did not exonerate the president. you have any concerns? >> there was no collusion so how do you get to obstruction? you watched the entire investigation for three years go after something that there's no proof there.'s v i think in the questioning of john radcliffe he answered your question rather clearly. this president has not done anything wrong in the press us so no i don't have a problem with it. >> what i have concerns about is the fact that in 2016 to american citizens were spied on associated with the presidential can pain. we know that's the case. the atty. gen. told us that's the case. we know they got a warrant and have renewed it three times. they spine for the by the better part of the years year
6:37 pm
and then same with papadopoulos . the used human sources. that to be a scary. never forget what emmett flood wrote to the atty. gen. when he said if they can do this to a presidential campaign and a president of the united imagine with they can do to you and i. imagine what they can-- that's why the investigation bill barr is doing and the one michael horwitz is doing are so darn important. that kind of stuff should never happen in this country but we know that it did. the atty. gen. of the united dates says he doesn't think it was properly predicated so let's figure out if it was or if it wasn't. think god that's exactly what he's doing >> you have no concerns? >> if you were falsely accused you would be to have to. that's the problem and this whole thing has played out over three years. remember what we learned today? they didn't even charge the guy who started the whole darn thing. he was the first guy to tell papadopoulos.
6:38 pm
they charged everyone else who gave false statements. they charged 13 russians no one has heard of but you can't charge the guy who started this saga we've endured as a country? i don't get that. i will say it until it's done. the investigation happening right now at the justice department is so darned important. >> a certain part of the hearing. remember today, i've asked a specific question. we are curtailed or hindered at all? no. we talked about the actions of the presidents. the hearing that we had, he made a very interesting point because one of the democrats was asking about advice or if you bus your boss give you advice would you follow it? you have to be careful about folks like this president who have been so frustrated and attacked from day one nothing happened to this investigation. we seem to gloss over the fact
6:39 pm
that it never stops. >> the question at the end of the day is what happened. it's not for the ethereal hypotheticals. to hide a bad agenda. mr. mueller said that. we answered that today. when they laid out every possibility that they could for obstruction and mr. mueller looked at them said i don't agree with your theory, that should tell you a lot right there. >> you watch the question where he laid that all out? the only new thing that i learned today is that even when doug collins says he's going to speak slower he can't. >> you brought up that she became the prime minister today and indicated he may be somewhat compromised. can you explain what you mean by that? >> it goes back to the origins of this investigation. one of the frustrating things
6:40 pm
that's not in the report is who he actually is. he's mentioned i think two dozen times, so the point that i was making is that we know he has close ties not only to our own fbi state department western intelligence agencies, he worked at campuses that appear to have some type of relationship with multiple western governments. he taught courses. he was actually right here about 100 feet away in 2017 participating in a program here in the us capital. the picture that i showed with johnson was a recent photo so the point that i'm trying to make. if we need to know, call me said he's a russian agent but in the report they don't say that at all. all i was expressing his we
6:41 pm
really need to know the answer. today mr. mueller stood by what is in his report but that doesn't bring finality or closure to whom it is. we still have that outstanding question. >> it says he met with mr. johnson in confidence. >> i was making the point that if this guy is continuing to hang out with nato leaders, johnson, and many others, we need to know who this guy really is because of he's a russian agent we need to make sure western allies know about it. >> very clear, it's time to put america first. it's time for the democrats to close the chap are on this book . it's time to get over the 2016 election. thank you.
