tv   House GOP Leaders News Conference  CSPAN  September 10, 2019 5:31pm-5:54pm EDT

5:31 pm
by your local cable or satellite provider. c-span, your unfiltered view of government. earlier today house republican leaders held a news conference about their legislative agenda answering questions on a government funding deadline, gun violence legislation and the 2020 campaign. hi, everybody. welcome back. great to be back. yeah. i can feel that you guys, you did miss us and we missed you so much. it's great to be back. we just came out of our conference meting and i know our members come back energized from having spent the work period who themselves are very energized and recognize the stakes that we're facing here and i'd say
5:32 pm
that's a significant contrast to where the democratic caucus is and the extent to which you have had particularly the democratic members and seats who have a huge disconnect between what their constituents wnat and why those voters sent them to washington and what's happening here with the democratic caucus and where you've got members who went home who are democrats who promised that they would bring jobs back and who promised they would work across the aisle and who promised that they would find common sense solutions to problems their constituents were facing and instead what we've all seen is a terribly radical, dangerous agenda coming out of the democrats and one that we're going to see continue certainly. we are already seeing that now. both in terms of the kinds of substance that they're focused on. their efforts to kill fossil fuels and their efforts to fund the american citizens and their determination to go down the path of impeachment and on
5:33 pm
impeachment, what we're seeing is -- and they're speaking very publicly about this on the record to many of you that their first effort at impeachment seems not to have worked and so now they're working for another path to impeachment. they've been determined to impeach this president at all cost since he was elected regardless of the constitution and they're fundamentally failing to abide by their constitutional responsibilities turning to impeachment into an absolutely political endeavor. in this regard i i just want to point out one thing which is that we've seen the republicans on the judiciary committee and the oversight committee as well to bring in horowitz who conducted the -- he's not just the inspector general of the justice department. he's also the head of the inspector general association government wide. he's the one who issued the report on james comey who said that comey failed to live up to his responsibility and set a
5:34 pm
dangerous example, and the democrats on the judiciary committee will not bring him in to testify. they refuse to do that and we think that that just fundamentally shows you their lack of substantive concern for issues that really should matter when the director of the fbi conducts himself that way because they're too focused on political attacks on the president, but we're going to continue to fight on behalf of the free enterprise system and on behalf of freedom and on behalf of our constitution and make sure that we're doing everything to stop the dangerous agenda to come out of speaker pelosi and the democrat. with that, i will turn it over to our whip mr. scalise. >> thank you, liz. welcome back. good to see all of you, as well. it was a busy august recess both back home and all around the country. i was able to travel to 18 different states to help meet with a lot of other colleagues
5:35 pm
and their districts and to meet with folks across the country that you can see a different kind of interest in what's happening in the economy. if you look at what we've been able to see with great job numbers over the last couple of weeks, we see about half of wee. a half million more people entering the workforce. wages are going up. you know, every day the democrats only want to talk about impeachment. they are bringing energy bills to the floor this week. we are the energy dominant country of the world right now. we are exporting oil and natural gas and helping our friends around the world. that reduces our trade deficit when we are selling energy to other countries. what did the democrats say? they say they want to stop it and are bringing three different bills to the floor that would reverse so much of that success. the president issued a veto threat on the bills.
5:36 pm
they will not go anywhere. you see the economy doing so well. you see people having higher wages because of good, conservative policy. their effort is to stop it moving towards a leftist socialist agenda. you can see that when you go to other states. especially the swing or the battle ground states, pennsylvania, michigan, florida, ohio. minnesota. finally on a positive note as well, back home in my district i was very proud to welcome the east bank all-stars from river ridge, louisiana who won the little league world series. the first time in the history of the state we had a team go to the world series let alone win the whole thing. we won 8-0.
5:37 pm
the girls' softball team from my district as well had never been to the hospital game. all the way to the hospital game. we were very proud of them too. a great weekend for sports to see that and the lsu tigers and the saints had a great victory. we made a lot of sports analogies but it is good to celebrate the positive things too. good. great to see all of that. >> you did not want to remind him of the rams/new orleans game last year. welcome back. we had six weeks back in the district listening to our constituents. i didn't hear anybody talk about it. we have a lot of work that the american people expect us to do.
5:38 pm
what i want to do is reflect on tomorrow. tomorrow our nation will pause to remember a day we were attacked by violent extremists on our very own soil. that very morning one of our own lost their lives. a flight attendant on american airlines flight 11 departing from boston that morning. like thousands of relatives and loved ones receiving gut wrenching news that day, betty ann's family was in utter shock and disbelief. with time they came to learn the crucial role betty ann played. she was the first voice anyone on the ground heard that the flight had been hijacked. she was calm, collected and direct when she delivered the news to the ground that they were hijacked.
5:39 pm
like all 9/11 victims, first responders, men and women in uniform represent the best of america. we have an obligation to not just remember their stories and legacies, but we must continue to do everything possible to ensure that americans are able to live a safe and prosperous life. as we move through the week we should never forget. as we move every day on the floor we should remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. we should rise to the occasion and we should do the best to make sure the next search is americas. saying all of that, we have a big agenda before us. we have things that were left that could have been done before we departed. we have the funding of government. we have the appropriation bills to get done. we have the united states, mexico, canada agreement that
5:40 pm
will only make america and this continent stronger. as we make the economy stronger, we make the world safer. as we continue to find better trade with canada -- i'm sorry. better trade with china and fair trade. it will only be stronger. i am convinced if it comes to the floor it will pass. i am convinced the only discussion inside the democratic conference about politics. i watched the judiciary committee talk about impeachment it reminds me of what the chairman promised the conference. you run for chair, you don't campaign for your country, you campaign for your conference. what did the chairman promise
5:41 pm
the democratic caucus the day after the election? that he would be the very best chair for impeachment. he made that compliment to the democratic congress. that has been his folkus and what he spent his time on. even though every road they went through hoped they would find something, they did not. this country is too important to play political games like that. time for the democrats to stop focusing on tearing the president down but to build america up. this month we should vote on it. put america first. keep politics out. mexico ratified. canada is just waiting for our action. the rest of our economy is waiting for our action.
5:42 pm
more than 170,000 jobs will be created. our gdp will continue to grow. more people will work. i think that is what congress is supposed to be doing. when an inspector general brought forth, to hear what they have found. the inspector general dealing with the justice department, i think that it is appropriate it comes before the committee. maybe a disagreement with the promise that he would impea impeachmeimpeach the president regardless of facts. an inspector general in a nonpartisan way.
5:43 pm
bringing it before the committee. i watched through the last break what is happening in hong kong. millions of people, week after week crave what america has. we should remember that america is an idea so powerful that it can inspire people to crave the freedom. every day we should stand with anyone that stands with freedom. this is a moment of time that we should. i listened to the democrats. i watched new members of the party redefine it.
5:44 pm
i hope that we put politics aside and focus. if you are in your district and you listened to your constituents on what they asked for. let's solve the problem. if you watched the anticipation rate for women from the age 25-54 it is 76.3%. this is an opportunity that america is watching and i hope that the congress rises to the occasion. >> two separate issues. first, do you think the federal
5:45 pm
government should be spending money at the president's resorts especially when he is not staying at them. >> they are hotels he owns. if people are traveling it is just like any other hotel. i know people will look at it. is it different if i go and stay and eat at a marriott or the trump. the president is not asking me to. he is competing in a private enterprise. >> on universal background checks do you think universal background checks would have presented that? >> i am waiting to get the report from the police to get all of that. i know we watched what happened in texas in a church shooting the background check failed in that. that individual was in the military.
5:46 pm
discharged. the second reason is that it came with his wife, the second time. we changed and improved the program. let's solve it to make sure that it does not happen again. >> you saw a president of what will probably be his playbook in 2020. do you think it is a message of it in 2020? >> people write whatever they want after the election tonight. there are two elections in north carolina tonight for congress. special elections i can read on both sides. i can tell you all of the special elections we lost in 2009 and won 63 seats. special elections are just what they are. they are special.
5:47 pm
i watch and see what happens. does a hurricane change the difference because one of the few places in america besides florida north carolina is one of the places they touch ground. the weather was so bad there yesterday we couldn't get off of the plane or take the helicopters over. everybody was soaked. we walked through the damage of what went through. elections are what they are in a special election. we have a great candidate. i know the democrats have been running for quite some time. the democrat running on the idea that he is not a socialist and does not believe what the democrats believe, why is he a democrat? he is running from his own party. i watched the democrat in their own campaign trying to play defense. they have been in power for some time. name me one thing or one problem
5:48 pm
they have solved. it is a real challenge for them. they have a record to run on now. i feel confident about where we are. fewer seats we have to win to win the majority. we have a bigger playing field. there are more seats democrats sit in that the president carried than hillary carried two years ago. i watched the democrat presidential campaign. caring about giving health care to illegals. i think the issue is going to be very strong. i think we are going to do quite well in the next election if the election is based upon ideas. when i watch who is still standing in the presidential campaign. he guarantees a wage for everyone in america who can work but is unwilling to. that goes against the core of who we are. that is what the new socialist
5:49 pm
democratic party believes. yes. >> you did spend a lot of time with the president yesterday. you have a meeting this afternoon to discuss the agenda coming up. what is the message to him as far as gun control and the aftermath of the mass shootings over recess. do you think there is a chance to strengthen background checks or remove red flags or any of the other measures? >> we will meet with the president. we will meet. we are back in. ways that we can make sure that the horrific things that take place will never happen again. i watched the president take action on this before. i was with the president when we
5:50 pm
went to las vegas. that a bump stock was okayed through the last administration. i watched what the president did. he took a bump stock away. i watched this president looks at the problem and wants to find a solution. this president sat down trying to find what is the best way to make sure these are never duplicated again and i think that's what he will discuss today as one of the ideas, getting all of the facts before us. where can we produce legislation that makes sure it doesn't happen? not for the sake of legislation, but what is the problem and why can't we solve it? we watched the parkland shooting. not once but twice the fbi was warned. given the name of the individual months ahead of time. we know mental health is a big concern inside of our country today.
5:51 pm
dealing with this and homelessness. substance abuse, others. how can we solve these problems? the democratic side looks at one thing. they want to impeach this president regardless of if we were facts or not. thank you very much.
