Senate Minority Leader Schumer on President Trumps Executive Order on... CSPAN January 29, 2017 3:57pm-4:23pm EST
arkansas senator tom cotton has also issued a statement supporting the president's executive order, saying in part -- earlier today senate minority leader chuck schumer held a news conference to voice his opposition to the executive order. this is 25 minutes. just hear from syria. you come on the other side of me. thank you, everybody.
had emotional moments together, myself and these newly arrived americans standing to my right and left. and we -- we are here today to deliver a vociferous no to the president and a misguided are aive orders that shock to the majority of americans and inflicting wounds on this country. saying no to misguided executive orders because they are bad for america, bad for our bad for security, humanitarian nature that america has always been. these orders go against what america has always been about.
the orders make us less safe, lessn, less american. .nd people forget this that's why so many of our intelligence, security and law enforcement leaders are opposed to this order and all of those like it. the order hurts our alliances overseas. we lose allies. it hurts our soldiers overseas as they lose intelligence sources. and allies to fight with. these ordersca hurt our domestic security by increasing the small number who would resort to terrorism at home. this order makes them more likely, not less. are joined today to say to the president, no more orders to turn america away from what it
has always been. we are demanding the president reversed these executive orders that go against everything we are. everything america has always stood for. i have communicated that the administration. i have talked with secretary of homeland security twice. i asked him to persuade the president to change his mind. i spoke to him this morning and one little bit of small good news amidst all of this is that there are now 42 americans at our airports that are detained under the court order, and the judge issued last night -- there was a great deal of worry that they would be sent back. secretary kelly assured me the would be obeyed and those 42
will be processed and allowed to come into america. he also told me this order would not affect those with a green card. millions of people. this morning, reince priebus did not say that on tv and so we need clarification, but it sure -- it shows you the incompetence of this administration. one hand is not know what the other is doing. most of the departments in charge of enforcing it didn't even know about it. they did not even check with the justice department to see if the orders are constitutional. i believe they are not. and judges in every corner of the land have our ready issue restraining orders against them.
no thought, no preparation, no coordination. it would be bad even if they were coordinated. just inhows you addition to the effectiveness and incompetence of the administration in addition to the nature of moving us far away from what america has always been about, which is what bothers me a most -- bothers me the most, other than the beauty of these people. you about the families we have here who will say a few words in a minute. is mohammed, he is an iraqi refugee, he arrived as a fewgee on january 5 weeks ago with his wife and two small children. why did hamid have to come here?
he helped our american soldiers translate. he and his family have gotten death threats, because they cooperated with our american soldiers. what kind of country, what kind of administration with tell me i need to stay there and face death? he helped our soldiers. he began the refugee process two years ago. donald trump had initiated his guidelines six weeks ago. -- if donna trump had initiated his guidelines six weeks ago, he would still be in iraq with his wife and the life of his family threatened. let me tell you about the car hawkish family -- limit tell you about this family. children -- thumbs up.
eight and six. they arrived here about a month ago. their parents and in-laws are american citizens. he started out as a taylor as many immigrants do. we have relied on immigrants. he spends a lot of time on city island. his wife is an educator. they have children and grandchildren here. in frontombs blew up of their house in damascus.
fills with promise and the american dream. donald trump seems to want to believe immigrants are either terrorists or criminals. these people are who they are. are they any kind of threat to america. they are the promise of america. we are here today -- oh yes, this is also scriptural and we have the support of so many religious leaders of every different faith throughout the country. "for you were strangers in the land of egypt."
matthew 25. i was hungry and you gave me something to eat. i was a stranger and you invited me in. francisreminded of pope who asked us in terms of crystal-clear to quotes -- with affective projects and new approaches in order to protect their dignity, improve their take -- andife, and in modernhallenges form for persecution and slavery. i'm here to tell you we will fight this. many of you may know this. named after uncle ellis, who is named after ellis island. this fight is in my bones.
i named my daughter, her middle name is,. named after the great poet who wrote those lines on the pedestal of the statue of tired,, "give me your your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." order wastive mean-spirited and un-american. it was implemented in a way that created chaos and confusion across the country, and it will only serve to embolden and a spire those around the globe who would do us harm. .t must be reversed immediately
senate democrats are going to introduce legislation to overturn this and move it as quickly as we can. and a high, as your senator from claw, and fight with every fiber of my being until these orders are overturned. thank you. now going to turn over to mohammed who will say a few words. >> thank you, sir. hello, everybody. good morning. i am mohammed hamid from iraq. i used to be undercover for the u.s. army when they were in iraq for 10 years straight, starting from 2003 until 2013. time, myat period of life, my family's lives, we were in a real risk.
we were threatened so minute times and we were on the brink to be killed. we got threatened so many times by those terrorists, and they were trying to track us down and trying to find our houses just to come and kill us. actually i applied for refugee ask for myself and my family as well. and actually give a hand to the people who need it. after two years of applying for i was granted the
asylum hit me and my family and my wife and kids. and now i feel much better and safer now it's in the united states. thank you for everybody supporting us. cws, -- ization, the the first help i received in the united states. i'm really -- i really appreciate every person. i even get help from people i never met before. >> you help people you have never met before, some of our soldiers. >> they help me even more than my family back in iraq. thank you everybody, thank you very much.
>> now we are going to hear from citizens, an american bronx, who hase just been granted refugee status. >> i would like to thank you for and also inities want to thank my wife. she is six years, fighting to bring my daughters and grandchildren to the u.s.. i am a refugee also. i've been in the united states since 1978. i am a good citizen.
i have my own business, i have my own house, but i don't have my children with me. it's very hard to see people being killed right and left. i have another daughter in lebanon stock. -- stuck in lebanon. schumer for senator his efforts. is going to fight this because refugees and people like us are built in america. we can build it better than trump wanted it. to be good citizens, she teach they teach them to be
good and do good for america and everybody. >> thank you. we are going to keep the questions to this subject. >> how many people are being held in the new york airport? what nationwide is secretary kelly told me a few hours ago. and i believe there are six at kennedy airport. i didn't understand. visitors foreign -- al media in books and >> i don't know what they have asked for psy couldn't answer that.
--i'm wondering if you think >> it is not just the tech industry, businesses depend on people like these folks to make their products, create their products, and by their products. and our business community, i have not heard them speak out. not just in text. they are going to buy cars. they are going to buy appliances. how about the appliance industry? our business people should be speaking out loudly. >> this morning donald trump tweeted that christians in the middle east have been executed in large numbers. what do you make of that?
program should be for all religions who are persecuted. that is the point. you want christians to come in. the refugee program from syria is about half and half right now. syrian and muslim. christians who are persecuted should be the come here. we have never used a religious test as to who should be a refugee. >> since this is clearly not what to be solved today -- are your opinions of the president saying this is uncharted territory. where do you see this a week or a month?
>> john mccain spoke out against it. we can only do it with republican support to at least undo this. this is unconstitutional. you don't need to be a legal scholar to know that. it will take ways to get it out. three and four courts not just here in new york, but temporary restraining orders. this is an example the people who aren't here, we could bring here. but they are people who have helped our military like in severe danger, many of whom who have relatives who
they have so many. here we are, we don't know what to do. if the lebanese government catch this they are going to give the syrian government -- they are going to put them in the army. i'm a muslim she's a catholic. we have no problem. she's fighting for her just like her own. it always has been working but some politicians make it that way. we live up here in the bronx.
have a jewish friend, a jewish family. they go there. this is part of my business. i never had a problem with anybody. i've been in this business for 40 years i have never had a complaint. >> so many in a debt some immigrants are creating jobs. >> anyone who hasn't answered we will let you do another one. >> is this what giuliani had in mind? >> i have no idea about that. am a what are the options for that? >> legislation. i heard senator mccain speak out pretty strongly on tv.
if we get a few more republicans i think we may be able to pass legislation to overturn it. >> -- they were going to keep going with procedures laid out in the executive order. >> as i said, i called when i heard the son of the lawyers who couldn't really talk to the people at kennedy airport. there were six of them on an airplane. i immediately called the secretary of homeland security kelly and said this would violate the court order. he said that's not so, we are all the people who came here and are subject to that order will be vetted. we have no problem with that and allowed to stay here in the united states. after they are vetted.
he didn't give me an exact time. getting a little bored? i know. i did not. you would think on something as serious as this there would be consultation and care, not a -- not just the justice department consulted, but a lot of other departments. this is serious stuff, this is human lives at risk. thank you, everybody. we appreciated and we want to thank our families. i told him that we want to show who these people are. us to believe that everyone is a terrorist or criminal who is an immigrant. it is not fair, not right.
folks speak far better than me. i think they will be great americans. thank you, everybody. >> president donald trump spoke king of saudithe arabia and the crown prince of the united arab emirates. both countries are u.s. allies and part of the coalition battling the islamic state group. now we discussion examining the agenda of the trump administration and the republican party. from today's washington journal, this is 30 minutes. c-span.org or watch it on c-span television. we want to welcome back peter the former director of office at strategic initiatives for the bush administration.
