tv Zionist Organization of America Dinner - Steve Bannon CSPAN November 23, 2017 6:20pm-6:37pm EST
>> next week, the senate holds a confirmation hearing for the federal reserve chair nominee jerome powell. watch live on tuesday. >> c-span, where history unfolds daily. 1970 nine, c-span was created as a public service by america's cable companies. >> next on c-span, former white house chief strategist steve bannon talks about the fight against isis. he spoke at the dinner by the zionist organization of america in new york city. theremarks are followed by u.s. ambassador to israel. current about the
israel-u.s. relations. congressman zeldin: our next person coming, it is really an honor to be able to introduce him. he is someone who has served seven years in the u.s. navy. someone who raised a daughter, who graduated from the u.s. military academy at west point. deployed with the 101st to iraq, currently serving on active duty. here we are on this veterans day weekend. to be able to hear from someone who bleeds red, white, and blue. i would be remiss if we did not say -- thank you, steve bannon for your service in uniform. [applause] congressman zeldin: to all of the veterans here, and there are
many in this crowd, thank you for your service to keep us safe and free. earlier this year, i had the opportunity to spend a good amount of time with steve at the west wing. throughout that time, he was passionately talking about how do we combat the rising tide of anti-semitism in the u.s. and abroad. he wanted to talk about moving the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem and strengthening the security and foreign policy. all across the area, the passions that bring us together here, as someone who is a great-grandson of a national field director of zoa, many
decades ago when that brandeis guy was in charge, it is an honor to be here to recognize someone who believes in all of the causes that bring you here. recently, abbas visited washington. arthur schwartz, who is here, called up his friend, steve bannon, and asked what it was like, assuming steve was at the white house that day. and steve said -- i am not at the white house. i refuse to be there. i will not breathe the same air as that terrorist. [applause] [cheering]
>> he said -- i would not be able to look you in the eye after breaking bread with someone with jewish blood on their hands and that is why steve bannon was not at the white house that day. [applause] so, when you learn that students for justice for palestine pick a president who is jewish or if you hear the commencement speaker at suny, or the student at berkeley who put a map on the wall -- where you are trying to pull out a fatally flawed deal, and you are disturbed about a un security council deal that seeks to ethnically clean jerusalem. or you want to send a strong message that we should never be financing terror.
when you have a palestinian authority that is not only inciting violence but rewarding terrorism. every time you're looking for a friend or an ally in that cause, if you want a resource, someone to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, as a jewish man, one who is one of two jewish people in congress, your friend is steve bannon. ladies and gentlemen, steve bannon. [applause] mr. bannon: thank you. thank you, congressman zeldin.
jared kushner came down into the war room that we had set up at the data center where we were watching the data coming in from the vote. we got the early exit polls. we were even in iowa and ohio. we were losing by huge margins in virtually every other state. when i came onto the campaign on august 14, we refined president trump's message. we had the finest candidate since ronald reagan and one of the greatest public speakers since william jennings bryan.
in refining the message that president trump talked about, we said -- destroy the physical caliphate of isis, designate the muslim brotherhood as a terrorist organization, decertify and renegotiate the iran deal and move the embassy to jerusalem. we were down about 16 points at that time and losing in every significant battleground state by double digits. on the evening of the eighth, for one short moment, jared and i looked at each other and said -- we thought we had this. the mainstream media got those exit polls and the opposition party over here was high-fiving and dancing around the newsrooms. they were looking at the biggest landslide in american political history.
at 9:15 p.m., the detroit free press called the state of michigan for hillary clinton. at 10:56 p.m., the associate press called ohio for donald j. trump. at 11:11 p.m., they called the state of north carolina for donald j. trump. at 12:02 a.m., they called the state of iowa for donald j trump. the opposition party, detroit free press put the state of michigan back in the neutral column. it was at that moment that we knew that donald j. trump, the strongest supporter of israel since ronald reagan, was going to be the president of the united states.
at 1:35 a.m., pennsylvania fell. at 2:29 a.m., wisconsin fell. at 2:30 a.m., the associated press designated donald j. trump as president-elect of the united states. that victory would not have come without one other person besides donald j. trump, sheldon. it is not about resources. it is about counsel, guidance, and wisdom. we were down by double digits almost the entire time. when we closed the gap, billy bush weekend happened. do you know what most of the establishment republicans do when things get tough? they cut and run. sheldon did not run.
he had donald trump's back. he offered guidance, counsel, and wisdom on how to get through it. he was there for donald trump on how to comport oneself and dig down deep. it was his guidance and wisdom that helped us get through. shortly after noon on january 20, 2016, president trump said -- we will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilized world against radical islamic terrorism. [applause] which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth.
president trump when he wrote those words in mid-december, what he was saying because it was talked about internally a lot. "which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth." the president knew that 100 years from now, that inaugural speech would be looked at and studied. in the first 9-10 months of his administration, he destroyed the physical caliphate of isis. people forget -- people forget, and the opposition party will never tell you -- i do not remember isis being eradicated on obama's watch. in 2014, isis had 8 million people under their reign. the second thing he did was call the arab summit to talk about stopping the games on financing
radical islamic terrorism. we are going to work with you but it is your responsibility. work with you to modernize islam. and, we are going to start to work together to stop the expansion of iran, not just in the middle east but throughout the rest of the world. look at the results. several weeks later, in an area not known for bold action by its participants, look at what the united arab emirates and saudi arabia did and qatar. in qatar, you have the financing of hamas and the muslim brotherhood. and in iran, the financing of hezbollah. someone finally took a stand. when they said -- the actions in the house of saudi arabia are just as bad -- look at what a brave young man is doing in his own country. as the storm clouds are rising in the middle east, and they are
i understand that in this room, that does not sit well with everyone. if i could say one thing about zoa and the work that mort klein does in washington, is that you are unapologetic about the state of defense of israel. and there are so many games being played by the establishment. they have lowered the bar of what that is supposed to be. you get double dealt all of the time. that is how we still allow the american government to finance people that have blood on their hands of innocent jewish civilians. until force has passed, until the iran deal is decertified and renegotiated, the establishment is just tapping along the jewish community in this country and our partners in israel. it is time for us to act.
i believe the only way to act is not through moderation. i am not a moderate. i am a fighter. [applause] and that is why i am proud to stand with israel and i am proud to be a christian zionist. i'm proud to be a supporter of the christian judeo west. we have a long, dark valley to go through. iran, turkey, hezbollah, hamas, the muslim brotherhood -- the middle east right now is on a knife's edge. as the radical left tries to nullify the 2016 election. great minds like professor dershowitz and others would agree with me. the president needs our back. because we are a nation at war.
