tv President Trump Remarks at NATO Summit Bilateral Breakfast CSPAN July 11, 2018 9:31pm-9:42pm EDT
much. other countries are not paying enough, so we are going to have a meeting on that. the secretary-general has worked very hard. hopefully we can get it resolved. this has been going on for decades. and notsproportionate fair to the taxpayers of the u.s.. we are going to make it fair. i want to complement the secretary-general. he worked very hard on this problem, he understand it better than anybody. thank you very much.
>> take a look at the chart, it is public, many companies -- countries are not paying what they should. many countries ow use a tremendous -- owe us a tremendous amount of money. years,go back 10 or 20 it is massive amounts of money. the u.s. has paid it and stepped up like nobody. this has gone on for decades. no other president brought it out like i bring it out. something has to be done. the secretary-general has been working on a very hard this year.
since our last meeting, commitments we have made for over $40 million more money spent by other countries. that is a step, a very small step. it is a very small amounts of money, relative to what they owe and should be paying. it is an unfair burden on the u.s. we are here to talk about that, i'm sure it will be resolved. i have great confidence in the secretary-general. he has worked very hard on this. himve great confidence in and his representatives. >> good to have you here for the summit. we are going to discuss many important pieces. -- [indiscernible]
with russia, where you are supposed to be guarding against russia, and germany pays billions of dollars a year to russia. we are protecting germany, we are protecting france, all of these countries. they go out and make a pipeline deal with russia, where they are paying billions of dollars into the conference of russia. we're supposed to protect you against russia, but they are paying billions of dollars to russia. i think that is an appropriate. the former -- inappropriate. the former chancellor of germany is applying it. germany will have almost every -- 70% of their country of their country controlled by russia with natural gas. is that appropriate? i have been complaining about this from the time i got in here. germany is totally controlled by russia because they will get 60% to 70% from energy from russia.
you tell me if that is appropriate. i think it is not. i think it is bad for nato. i don't think it should have happened. i think we have to talk to germany about it. on top of that, germany is paying a little bit over 1%. the u.s. is paying 4.2% of a much larger gdp. i think that is inappropriate, also. we are protecting germany, france, everybody, yet we are paying a lot of money to protect. this has been going on for decades. this has been brought up by other presidents, but other presidents never did anything about it. i don't think they understood it or didn't want to get involved. it is very unfair to our country, unfair to our taxpayers. i think these countries have to step it up immediately. germany is a rich country. they talk about they are going to increase it by 2030.
they could increase it immediately tomorrow and have no problem. i don't think it is fair to the u.s. we are going to have to do something, because we will not put up with it. it is inappropriate. we have to talk about the billions and billions of dollars being paid to the country that we are supposed to be protecting you against. everybody is talking about it all over the world. we are supposed to be protecting you from russia, but why are you paying billions of dollars to russia for energy? why our countries in nato, namely germany, having a large percentage of their energy paid to russia? if you look at it, germany is a capsule of russia. they get rid of their nuclear, they are getting so much of the oil and gas from russia. i think it is something nato has
to look at. i think it is very inappropriate. we think it is inappropriate. i don't know what you can do about it now. it doesn't seem to make sense that we have to defend them against russia. there are sometimes differences, different views and disagreements. the pipeline from russia to germany. [indiscernible] we understand we are trying to together -- stronger together than apart. how can you be together when a country is getting its energy from a person you want protection against, or a group you want protection against? so where we stand together al
in dealing with russia, we are stronger. >> you are just making russia richer? war nato the cold allies were with russia -- [indiscernible] >> energy is a much different story than normal trade. you have a country like poland, that won't accept the gas. look at some of the countries that don't accept it, because they don't want to be captive to russia. germany is captive to russia, because it is getting so much of its energy from russia. we're supposed to protect germany, but they are getting their energy from russia. explain that. thank you.
