jessica rae: at least the wind is far calmer than the past several days as boone, iowa to voice their opinions on the dakota access pipeline... which would travel over a thousand miles through parts of iowa and south dakota. the iowa utility board is hearing hundreds of testimony from citizens both for and against the pipeline. my generation still has hope that there is another way of doing things, that we can power our economy and create resilient communities, all while creating good paying jobs that build wealth for our people instead of exploiting our precious resources. "food paying a mortage paying utility bills, putting kids through college, that's the personal financial gain that this project will bring to thousands of folks in iowa" jessica rae: more than 200 people on both sides of the issue got the chance to tell the iowa utilities board what they think. and even with a strict two minute time limit, it was an all-day process for the board to hear all the public comments. reporter amanda krenz has more. "cedar rapids is
6:01 am
probably no closer than 80 or 90 miles to the bakken pipeline route. but in this part of central iowa, it's closer to home and opponents re visible in their opposition. sot/nat cheer that was also true at the hearing site as opponents wore one color and those supporting the pipeline wore another. one cedar rapids man used his two minutes for a protest song " but those supporting the project were singing a different tune in front of the board. it would be better for construction workers to work on projects that use clean energy not fossil fuel.
6:02 am
"we cannot let the short term trump the long term utility board." "think about us because this is not really your decision to make. who are you to put the ypung people across the country into jeopardy so you can what? pad your resumes by successfuly protecting corprate interest at the utilities board?" this was the only day the public could comment on to the board. process continues with an evidence hearing. after that, it's in the hands of the three board members. they can have a discuss their can just send out a written notice. there is no time table for when that has to happen. recipe that is as tasty as it is comforting. check it out. "you know, this is the time of year as the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, when it's only natural to crave comfort food. and nothing is more comforting than a pot of homemade soup. but if you're thinking, "who has time to make soup?" well with today's shortcut recipe you can have a hot and hearty soup on the table in minutes. let me show you. we started by heating some chicken broth with half-and-half in a soup pot. once that comes to a boil, we slowly add in some instant mashed potatoes (that's our shortcut), then lots of shredded cheddar cheese, and a bit of black pepper. we'll let that simmer just long enough for it to thicken up. and if you want you can hearty this up a bit, maybe adding some frozen peas or broccoli . really whatever veggies you'd like. talk about easy. maybe top it

happened on the u-s-d campus in vermillion during the fall semester. police were alerted and the university sent out an email to students and staff... including a picture of the suspect. one person has since been named a suspect and could face charges. but police don't agree with the release of those pictures. abc9 news reporter lukas voss has more. vo: when sexual crimes occur on college campuses there is always concern in the community. but even more concern about how an institution is responding. in the university of south dakota's case they released an image showing 3 person's of interest their student body. sot: " if we think there is an immediate danger we need to issue the alert. it's disingenius to issue an alert when you know that you have photos of persons of interest and then not use the picture." director of marketing communications and university relations tena haraldson said. vo: university's face steep fines under federal law if those alerts are not issued. in usd's case however ... where that picture came from or if there was still a threat when the message was sent out ... is in question sot: " there was no

additional danger to the public.in our view. those photos were not part of our investigation and we didn't release them to anybody. later we found out they were facebook photos." vermillion police chief matthew betzen said. vo: according to information from the university the pictures were used by campus police as part of their own investigation. the problem? after it had been sent to the complete student body ... the picture ... including a man that turned out to have no relation at all to the case ... quickly spread on social media. sot: "if sexual assault is the worst thing that can happen to a women probably one of the worst things that can happen to a man is being accused of a crime that he didn't commit." sot: " our intent was never to publish them broadly our intent was to inform our immediate community. they were persons of ineterest i think that's a long way from charging anybody," vo: and because the university clearly labled the picture as person's of interests it's unlikely that they will face legal action because of a possible defamation lawsuit. sot: " you may very well not be a suspect at all. you maybe just a third party witness or you may in fact have no information. in terms of defamation i would't see a viable lawsuit." attorney, anthony osborn said. and while police and university disagree on how the case was handled both just want the same thing
