skinny," it is wednesday, january 27th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. >> we do say good morning to you. i'm kendis gibson. and i'm reena ninan. >> >> we're going to begin with breaking news out of oregon where one person has been killed in a shoot-out between the fbi and members of the armed group holding a federal wildlife refuge. >> we're getting word that the victim has been identified as robert lavoie fin couple who had been acting as a spokes person for this group. eight people have been arrested including the leader amman bundy. >> the take-down did not happenn at the wild reiff refuge where militia members where is holed up for weeks armed. instead, oregon state police and federal agents moved in as group leader amman bundy and his followers were on the move apparently driving to a meeting with locals.

on oregon's highway 395, pulling over the vehicle bundy was riding in. law enforcement sources are telling abc news a person who died opened fire first and then was killed in the return of buts. bundy and multiple other people who were with him were arrested. the arrrrts alsoso took place elsewhere. immediately local hospital was put on lockdown as a follower injured in the shoot-out got treatment there. alex stone, abc news. >> donald trump will not take part in the debate tomorrow on foxt o fox news. >> trump was demanding fox remove news anchor megyn kelly as one of the moderators. fox refused so trump says i'm out. he's been highly critical of kelly since a debate in august when she asked him about the disparaging words he used to describe women he didn't like. >> megyn kelly's reaeay biased against me. she knows that. i know that, everybody knows that. do you really think she can be fair at a debate?

>> christie now saying he was only joking. what will trump do on thursday? he tells us he's going to host an event to raise money for veterans and wonders how many people will watch the debate if he's not there. tom llamas, marshalltown, iowa. >> i'm curious to see how many people will be watching. hillary clinton is just barely edging out bernie sanders in iowa. sanders seems shocked by the huge crowd in st. paul last night. so many people turned out, nearly 5,000 people were moved to an overflow room for the most part, stayed on script calling for a political revolution. hillary clinton has been on the stump in iowa, as well, stepping up her criticism of sanders. essentially calling him unelectable and at a town hall meeting clinton was asked if she would it be open to nominating president obama to the supreme court. she laughed saying that question was a first for her but said "it's a great idea."

following the death of a veteran principal. susan jordan was struck and killed when a bus jumped the curb in front of her elementary school. two 10-year-old students were hurt but expected to survive. jordan had been principal of the school for 22 years. let's move on now to the big digout after the blizzard of 2016. the federal government by the way in washington set to reopen today and so are schools there and in philadelphia but not in baltimore. slowly but surely life is returning to normal in the eastern u.s. we get more from abc's david kerley. >> reporter: take a look. a front end loader in queens needed to pull a sanitation truck out of the thick snow. part of the reason this recovery is so slow. residential streets fretz newark to baltimore and south remain a problem. for a third day outside of richmond, beverly wood is stuck. her street has not seen a plow. >> i can't get to work because i can't get out. >> reporter: in virginia, one in responsible for still have not

makes on the debate without me. okay? >> forecasters are now expecting 3 to 5 inches of snow in des moines on monday which could affect voter it urnout. reena, kendis. >> our thanks to bazi. breaking news coming in from oregoning where leaders of an armed group that seized a remote wildlife refuge have been arrested. one of the group's members was killed during the take-down which occurred during a traffic stop. jason patric was s sll at the scene when the arrests were made. >> r rorter: well, i've heardrd that a couple people were shot and one person is dead. doesn't sound much like a peaceful resolution to me but everybody at the -- is making strong preparations for a peaceful resolution. i'm not sure how much you can trust the folks that say peaceful resolution, but that's what we're preparing for, the peaceful resolutioning.

the others who were arrested face felony charges of conspiracy to impede the duties of federal officials through the use of force, incontinualdation or threats. now to a terror plot. . the fbi says targeted a masonic temple in milwaukee. a u.s. citizen is behind bars. pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: authorities say the suspect wanted to launch a cold blooded massacre and spark other attacks across the country. according to the fbi, sammy mohammed hamza, an american citizen planned to go inside a ma sonicicemple and gun down 30 people. he visited a firing range, thinking he could carry out the attack with two other radicals. using three machine guns with silencers. investigators say he is caught on tape saying when we go into a room, we will be killing everyone. the fbi launched this investigation in september of last year. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. well, naval authorities in

lockdown imposed after reports that shots had been fired after completing a full sweep of the base and at nearby schools, the navy says it found no sign of a gunman and no evidence of any shooting. an unidentified employee reported hearing three shots early yesterday morning, prompting a full scale lockdown that lasted nearly six hours. six cleveland police officers have been fired and six others suspended for their roles in a police chase and shooting which left two dead. the officers fired a total of 137 shots during the incident. that was back in 2012. elizabeth hur has more. >> reporter: timothy russell and melissa williams were inside this car riddled with bullets. in all, 137 shots fired. russell and williams were unarmed. it all started with a high speed chase involving 62 police cars over more than 20 miles. the case sparked by a backfiring

and officers mistakenly thinking the suspects were shooting at them. >> it was obvious a rush to judgment was the worst possible way to handle an incident this complex. >> authorities don't know the why russell didn't stop but the officers were cited for joining the chase and leaving the city without permission. one officer stood trial after jumping on the suspect's car and firing 15 shots. he said he fired fearing for his life. >> i thought we would be shot and be killed. >> and was acquitted of manslaughter. >> the police union president is vowing to fight the firings, calling move unbelievable and politically motivated. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. >> president obama is calling for speeding up research to diagnosis, prevent and treat zika virus. he met with the top health and secure officials yesterday in the situation room. officials financials suspect it is linked to a wave of birth defects in brazill. they have recommended praeg

san diego have lifted the lockdown imposed after reports that shots had beeeefired after completing a full sweep of the base and at nearby schools, the navy says it found no sign of a gunman and no evidence of any shooting. an unidentified employee reported hearing three shots early yesterday morning, prompting a full scale lockdown that lasted nearly six hours. six cleveland police officers have been fired and six others suspended for their roles in a police chase and shooting which left two unarmed people dead. the officers fired a total of 137 shots during the incident. that was back in 2012. abc's elizabeth huhuhas more. >> reporter: timothy russell and melissa williams were inside car riddled with bullets. in all, 137 shots fired. russell and williams were unarmed. it all started with a high speed chase involving 62 police cars over more than 20 miles. the chase sparked by a backfiring car, believed to be

undercover investigation which began last september. police in seattle this morning say two people are dead and at least three others wounded by gunfire, all of this taking place late last night at a homeless camp in downtown known as the jungle. the police chief believes the shooting was not random and that there are two persons of interest in the case. six cleveland police officers have been fired and six others suspended for their role in a police chase and shooting which left two unarmed people dead. officers fired a total of 137 shots during the incident back in 2012. both occupants of the car were killed. the police union blasted the decision, calling it politically motivated and insane. >> it's a terrible situation. it's a tragic situation. but we responded. we responded to the felonies that were being committed. and don't let anybody tell you any differently. >> the chase began when officers standing outside the police
