his handling of terrorism, 60% to 34%. right now in san bernardino county thousands of employees are getting ready to return to work today five days after a county restaurant inspector and his wife opened fire on his co-workers at a holiday party. investigators are looking into what led syed farook and tashfeen malik to attack last wednesday. the couple was killed in a shootout with police. and syrian refugees are scheduled to arrive in texas today. 12 syrians are to join their relatives in dallas and houston. another nine refugees will arrive on thursday. last week the state of texas sued the federal government and the international rescue committee. on friday they said they no longer want an immediate order stopping the refugees but they will continue the lawsuit. eric: some good news for the iowa hawkeyes after a heart breaking loss saturday night. the 12 and 1 hawks are headed to the rose bowl. the hawks got the official word early sunday afternoon. they will face the 11 and 2 stanford cardinal. stanford is coming off the pac 12 championship and has one of

the front runners for the heisman, christian mccaffrey. it was a rollercoaster ride for iowa fans. the devastation of saturday's loss to michigan state was tempered with the rose bowl berth. for some fans it will be the first rose bowl game with iowa they've ever seen. but no matter how the season ends in pasadena fans agree it's been a great ride with plenty to be proud of. >> it was no disappointment to watch iowa go for their 13th win. >> i grew up kind of watching the badgers play in the rose bowl so it's nice to see the hawkeyes there. >> really exciting place for us to land. i don't know i think this is the first time we've been since i've been alive. so just really exciting i'm happy to be where we are. eric: fans say while saturday's big 10 championship was a very tough loss, it likely earned the respect of the committees who pick the matchups like the rose bowl. sports director andy garman was in iowa city as the bowl matchup

andy: -- >> this news is good medicine for all of us. just ease of a tough outcome. >> great game between two championship caliber teams. one representing the big 10 the other the pac 12. so i think it's going to be a very competitive match up between two great teams. >> it's exciting we're blessed and honored to have an opportunity to play in this game. you know it's the granddaddy of them all. eric: so the hawkeyes are headed to pasadena for the first time since 1990 and just the sixth time ever. that game is set for new years day at four clock on espn. -- at 4:00 on espn. more big stories this morning. we now know the names of the people involved in a deadly home invasion. police say 31-year-old travis williams died after breaking into a home at 2020 east 14th street early saturday morning. 19-year-old ali cano and 18-year-old whitney campbell were in the home at the time. an autopsy is scheduled. then prosecutors will review the evidence and decide whether or not to file charges. the first trial related to allegations of hazing at

school has been scheduled. 18-year-old seth pille accused of hazing freshmen on the football team recently pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse charges. his trial is scheduled for february 9. two other teens were also charged in that same case. all three have been expelled from school. shaina: we are a week into december and we do not feel like it. metinka: will take it. we are dealing with some fog. a enough to make your commute last a little bit longer. visibility has fallen back near zero. near the des moines area, officially a half mile. visibility will be changing up and down a little bit. current temps have fallen below freezing. watch for some of that fog to be freezing fog. when the sunshine finally winds

highs will be in the upper 40's and low 50's. eric: starting today a portion of the skywalk will be closed until 2018. all for construction of the new convention center hotel. shaina: and just in time the county has announced this morning the launch of new skywalk app. kcci's alyx sacks sat in on a county meeting before the app launched and alyx what does the app do? alyx: it is going to be a useful tool for anyone who wants to get around downtown. here's a look. you can download it through your app. it is either ios or android. it is a free app to download. the little fun aspect is a little. will pop up when you start walking around. we will show you that. all in the timing of the closure. this is great for central iowa. >> i think it is great. it is very visitor friendly. it is very easy to use. i think it's going to be very popular.

navigate. alyx: is going to be good timing because of that portion of the skywalk that will be closing. it is closing today. to start work on the new convention center. that is going to be a 330 run facility that was approved earlier last week. skywalk will not reopen until spring of 2018. the hope is at least the county's perspective is with this skywalk app, people will be up to get around that. they will be in to post other closures. they have future plans for the skywalk. they're going to be things like where you can use the restroom. >> to be able to help people navigate. i want to make sure that we do not get stuck in a rut where we have closures and not share the information. i don't want to do it with signs. i want to do it virtually.

a few people actually used canoes to get around. fire crews asked drivers to avoid going through flooded areas. they did not listen. in central iowa, it sounds like it is going to just be sunny. metinka: they usually have the best weather but i think this week we've got it for sure. it is very foggy out this morning. it looks pretty. but if you have to be driving in it, plan for it to take a couple of extra minutes. this fog will continue through. with the fog advisory expiring at 9:00. once we get the sunshine, temperatures will feel great this afternoon. headed for a high into the low 50's. we got more coming for the week of had. -- a week -- the week ahead. friday, highs around 20 degrees.

shaina: nasa's cyguns launched sunday from cape canaveral. the spacecraft is carrying more than 7000 pounds of science and research crew supplies and vehicle hardware. the launch was the 4th attempt in the past week to get it into space. three previous launch attempts were scrubbed due to bad weather at the kennedy space center. the spacecraft will arrive at the international space station on wednesday. former u.s. president jimmy carter announced that his latest brain scan showed no signs of cancer. he made the announcement over the weekend, four months after revealing that melanoma had spread to his brain and at the time he said he was putting himself in the hands of god. previous tests found four lesions on his brain were still there. doctors removed part of his liver and he had radiation treatment plus a newly approved auto-immune drug. and the president and first lady joined the celebration for the kennedy center honors sunday.

songwriter carole king, filmmaker george lucas and actress rita moreno. stephen colbert hosted the gala at the kennedy center opera house. the honors will be broadcast on cbs on december 29. eric: taking a look at some more sports news. in the nfl sunday the new england patriots lost their second game of the year against the philadelphia eagles. injuries have decimated the pats over recent weeks. the patriots were leading 14 to nothing until a blocked punt turned things around for the eagles. philadelphia went on to win it 35 to 28. the chicago bears were coming off a strong win over the packers on thanksgiving. chicago had a 7 point lead with less than 2 minutes left in the game. but the 49ers threw a 4 yard touchdown to tie it up. chicago had one last chance to win it but missed a game winning field goal sending it into overtime. san francisco goes on to win 26 to 20. in minneapolis it was the vikings and seahawks. seahawks came out strong and kept it rolling all game long. russell wilson ran in one touchdown putting the seahawks up 14 to nothing.

touchdown to doug baldwin making it 21 to nothing in the vikings first half. only score came in the 3rd quarter. seattle wins 38 to 7. and the chiefs traveled to take on oakland this weekend. the raiders were leading 14 to 7 going into the second half and kept a good lead until kansas city tied it up at 20 in the 4th quarter. a big interception for the chiefs turned it around and they went on to win 34 to 20. the season's not over for the iowa hawkeyes even after a devastating loss in the big 10 championship against michigan state. they are gearing up for their first rose bowl appearance in 25 years. the 12-1 hawks will face the 11 and 2 stanford cardinal. stanford is coming off the pac 12 championship and has one of the front runners for the heisman on their team. that game will be in pasadena , california, new year's day at 4:00 on espn. and the season continues for another iowa team. the uni panthers rocked 5th ranked portland state 29 to 17 late saturday night. they are now onto the quarterfinals where they will face north dakota sate. the panthers lost to the mighty

bison by three back in october. the rematch between the two is set for saturday at 11:00 at the fargodome live on espn. shaina: stocks surged after the labor department announced that the u.s. economy added 211000 -- 211,000 jobs in november. on friday the nasdaq closed up 104 points. and the dow gained 369 points. porsche plans to offer an all-electric performance car by the end of the decade. the company is boasting about the 4-door car which looks like a futuristic version of today's porsche panamera. it will be able to go more than 300 miles on a single charge. fans wanted and toymakers listened. a doll featuring the likeness of selma director ava duvernay is expected to go on sale today. it's part of mattel's sheroes line. back in april the company released one-of-a-kind barbie dolls based on six women for the variety magazine's power of women luncheon. it hasn't been said where the doll will be sold or how much it will cost yet.

duvernay is the first african-american woman to direct a movie nominated for a best picture oscar. chipotle says its committed to -- says it is committed to overhauling its food-safety standard. this after an e-coli outbreak sickened at least 45 people in several states. the new procedure will include testing of all produce and ingredients before they are shipped. and enhancing employee training for food safety and handling. eric: amazon's warehouse in new jersey is causing traffic gridlock this holiday season. neighbors say it takes almost an hour to drive less than a mile as the center's more than 4, -- more than 4000 employees go hour. congestion had gotten so bad that the mayor there threatened to sue the company. amazon has announced to stagger employee shifts to alleviate traffic. from tv streaming devices to a dispenser that turns bottled beer into draft we've got some top tech buys for your home this holiday season.

syria to fight isis. part of the federal investigation into san bernardino is focusing on the female suspect, tashfeen malik, and whether she radicalized her american-born husband. >> we are working closely with our foreign counterparts to gather that information. it will be a long process. it will be an exhaustive process. eric: tashfeen is said to have pledged allegiance to isis on facebook just before last week's attack, and isis has claimed the couple as followers. but officials in the u.s. say there is no evidence the couple was part of a larger terror network. meanwhile, authorities in california want to question the couple's next-door neighbor. they suspect he provided the two semi-automatic weapons used in the attack. the fbi says he is not considered an official suspect. shaina: more big stories, saturday's loss was a tough one, but now things looking pretty rosy for hawkeye fans. >> it was tough to swallow then but now going to the rose bowl

weekend. key hearings are set this week on governor branstad's plan to privatize medicaid. a legislative oversight committee will hear from some of the families who would be affected today. and tomorrow, officials from the federal centers for medicare and medicaid services will be in iowa. they could decide to delay the planned january 1st transition. we'll let you know what happens. shaina: also today, polk county is launching a new app to help you get around the skywalks. kcci's alyx sacks is live and good timing because a portion of the skywalk is closing today. alyx: that is right. the skywalk between watson powell way and the convention center is closing today until the spring of 2018.

an out and very -- cap -- app. it shows skywalk access. if skywalks are closed, it will show them that way. it is a way for you to understand, get where you are trying to go, and they are really looking forward to the use of this app when portions of the skywalk will be closed. if you go into the app, it will show you where you need to go. they have another app that is coming in february. >> we have a phase two planned for february to allow people to walk through the skywalks and restaurants, businesses, things of that nature. alyx: this is a look at the app.

full recovery later on, and that should happen by later this morning. shaina: and looking ahead today, governor branstad is holding his weekly news conference at 9:00 a.m., not at the statehouse, but at jordan creek elementary school in west des moines. we'll let you know what that's all about. the governor will also be getting ready to head out on an economic development trip to new york city this week. he's also ordered flags to half-staff today in iowa from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to mark pearl harbor remembrance day. eric: it is also the second day of hanukkah. jews around the world celebrate the 8-day festival. the first nightly candle on the menorah was lit last night, the second tonight. you're looking at video of the grand menorah that's lit every year here in des moines at maccabee's kosher deli. and a few weeks before christmas, we all get busy, but shopkeepers on main street are especially swamped right now, especially the very special one who looks an awful lot like santa. tonight, you are going to visit his woodshop where he makes one very specific toy and tells stories so good, fans will fly in from other states just to listen. it's a main street santa who's awful convincing.

metinka: it is a really start to to this monday. across less central and north central iowa. algona reporting visibility down to zero, half a mile in des moines. visibility changes over the next couple of hours. there is a dense fog advisory in effect until 9:00 in all the great shaded counties. -- gray shaded counties. temperatures have fallen below freezing to the west. watch for some slippery patches on the sidewalks and side streets. off to the east, temperatures are doing a little bit better, starting off in the 30's. it will be a quiet afternoon, no real major weather systems on the way. this is just a week trough that

shaina: good news for people who dread the dentist's drill in this morning's health alert. a new 7-year study suggests drilling and filling may no longer be required in many cases of dental decay. researchers say 30% to 50% of fillings can be avoided through preventative oral care which can reverse the decay. scientists in london tracked more than 50 million women and found detection and treatment of dcis, an early form of breast cancer, helps prevent more invasive breast cancer later on. there's been debate over the effectiveness of treating dcis, but researchers say their findings show many cases become invasive if left untreated. and new data from a scandinavian study indicates that a father's lifestyle choices can change the genetic information he carries in his sperm, which could later impact the health of his future children. the study found changes can occur even from things like weight loss. eric: and "the hunger games" finale makes it three in a row.
