>> the most watched news at noon in central iowa. this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news at noon. mollie: right now at noon, he's picking up steam in iowa. but ted cruz is picking up some criticism from his opponents for comments he made at a closed door fundraiser. good afternoon everyone. he is challenging donald trump atop the polls today. but this is not the first time trumpeting one of his opponents rise, only to fall by the wayside. reporter: ted cruz is on the rise in the price for the gop nomination. the latest poll shows the texas

october and is in second place. he now has the endorsement of bob vander platz, a prominent social conservative that is backed the last two iowa gop winners. >> i believe in expect senator ted cruz to be the nominee in 2016. reporter: donald trump remains the front runner but cruz is not worried. he told donors that trump and ben carson will fade. >> i believe that gravity will bring both of those campaigns down. prepared to be commander-in-chief, who understands the threats we face. who in my comfortable having their finger on the button? reporter: this morning trump like ted cruz is getting ready to attack. i am leading by so much he must. you will fall like all others. will be easy. trumpeting challengers rise before dropping. even after making controversial statements like this week's call for a ban on muslims entering

>> we just can't afford anymore to be so politically correct. reporter: while the majority of americans still cbs news they disagree with his proposal, the opposite is true when you ask republicans. craig boswell, cbs news, washington. mollie: 67% of people surveyed by cbs news say that trump's proposal would go against america's founding principles donald trump will campaign in . des moines tonight at 6:30 at the iowa state fairgrounds. he'll be holding a rally in the varied industries building. tickets to the event are free. presidential hopeful ben carson is threatening to leave the gop. the retired neurosurgeon issued a statement slamming the gop after reports that party insiders were discussing the possibility of a deal to pick a nominee at the republican national convention. carson is campaigning in iowa today. we'll see if he mentions the threat a his town hall meeting this afternoon in moravia.

are conducting a search warrant in a home in -- in connection with the union county death investigation. beretta dillinger was found in a pond near that those results have not been busy -- released. a judge will deliver a verdict in the ngor makuey murder trial in just over an hour. the defense says makuey's actions prove he was insane when he beat 97-year-old rupert anderson and his wife harriett in their eastside home last summer, killing rupert. but prosecutors say he knew what he was doing. kcci will be there at 1:30 when that verdict is read. news around iowa. today in ottumwa, first degree murder charges now filed in connection with the death of a 3-year-old boy. 31-year-old kasheena tucker is charged in the 2014 death of wysdom evans. tucker was the child's guardian when he died. authorities arrested tucker in utah where she's being held on a half million dollars bond. a 79-year-old is killed in a

afternoon. state troopers say thomas myers of ogden pulled out in front of the semi at the intersection of highway 30 and 222nd street. 38-year-old jeffrey gray of story city was driving the semi. he was taken to the boone county hospital with unknown injuries. a $1,000 reward now offered in webster county. the sheriff's office is investigating extensive vandalism to the courthouse in fort dodge. someone sprayed two fire extinguishers on the third and 4th floors. the courthouse has been closed for cleaning. the hope is to have it back open on monday. dow chemical and dupont are merging to create the world's largest chemical company. the new $130 billion company will be called dow-dupont. the plan is to split it into three new publicly traded companies focused on agriculture, material science and specialty products. federal authorities continue to

shooting. in the meantime on capitol hill, lawmakers want to know why the government didn't pick up on the suspects' extremist views. kcci's nikole killion has the story from washington. vanessa: nikole: the fbi says it could take days to finish the search of a bandanna neil -- san bernardino lake. they may have visited the lake on the day of the deadly rampage. on capitol hill the head of the fbi and other intelligence officials brief lawmakers about the ongoing investigation. many wonder whether potential red flags were missed. the fbi says the couple discussed jihad and martyrdom as early as 2013, but the government did not appear to pick up on this message is according to federal officials. in washington, nikole killion reporting. mollie: the shooting happened more than a week ago. 14 people were killed. congress is buying itself more time to keep the government running ahead of a midnight deadline. the house just passed a

i will have a breakdown of when the rain will make its way to your neck of the woods coming up shortly. mollie: the iowa state cyclones remain undefeated after last night's cyhawk showdown. quite a feat because at one point the clones were down 20 points. but they made a big showing in the second half and with just 21 seconds left, the score was 82-81. monte morris drove down the lake --lane with nine seconds left given the clones beat the hawkeyes 83-82 to the delight of iowa state fans. >> it's amazing. his total magic. >> typical iowa basketball. they like to get big leads, but they are not a good closing team. whatever, it happens. >> that was probably the most emotional thing i've ever been through. i am almost in tears.

it's one of the best experiences i've had it iowa state. mollie: excited fans stormed the court at hilton right after. many had camped out for days ahead of the big in-state rivalry game. one injury was "des moines register" columnist randy he covers iowa state sports and suffered a broken leg in all the commotion. here is a picture of him down on the floor. it was a compound leg fracture. we've learned it was his tibia he had surgery last night. he said he was plowed into by someone who is not a student and we wish him a speedy recovery. knapp center at drake university is rocking over the lunch hour. the drake women's basketball team is playing right now in front of over 3,000 elementary and middle school kids from around central iowa. the game is the highlight of a classroom focus on teamwork and sportsmanship provided by the character counts program and

>> this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news at noon with mollie cooney and meteorologist jason sydejko. mollie: they're one of the holiday season's most popular gifts. but the u.s. consumer product safety commission is currently investigating ten reports of hoverboard fires in nine states. now some airlines say they do not want them on their planes over fears that the lithium-ion fire. reporter: already one of the

appears that hover boards are continuing to heat up, literally. they posted this video from alabama. it just caught fire. >> the battery just shot out. reporter: now this gift is finding its way onto some less popular lists. on thursday the three largest airlines banned them from flight. they're concerned about the toy's lithium-ion batteries. >> they ignite and catch fire there he violently. reporter: cell phones, tablets and tablets -- iphones use low wattage batteries. darrell issa concerned about the hover board batteries. dell supported -- delta pointed to the size of the batteries and found the string to the battery often exceeded government limits for what is allowed on board an aircraft. one manufacturer blames cheap knockoffs for the problem saying, they don't compromise on it comes to using the highest quality parts. and urge customers to be aware of fake units being sold on the

according to the founder of the safety institute, the hugely popular product may eventually be recalled. >> they are considered toys that they are not. at the end of the day you have a product that doesn't have to meet any safety requirements. mollie: airlines are not the only ones moving away from the hover board. says it will stop filling the overs -- the product because of safety concerns. the post office is one of the busiest places this holiday season. mailing deadlines for gifts start as early as next week. this next monday, december 14, is expected to be the busiest mailing day of the year. because tuesday the 15th is the standard package deadline to be there before christmas. standard letters and cards deadline. next monday is the priority mail packages deadline. and wednesday the 23rd is the last chance to mail priority cards and letters. take a look at this video of the main post office's sorting center.

thousands of pieces of mail to go through. on a typical week they handle 20,000-30,000 small parcels. this week they are expecting to deliver more than 100,000. most post offices extended saturday hours to 1:00 p.m. to handle the traffic. so to make your trip to the post office painless the post master has these tips. >> make sure it is a box for what your mailing., that you are not extending the boundaries. you don't have to wrap it up with tape. you verify the address before you put it on there and put your return address on there. mollie: you might be a good data to stay inside in the sum of this holiday chores done. jason: i would say later in the day on saturday for sure. early in the day i think he will be ok but after that all bets are off. we do hang on to the warmth. temperatures in the upper 40's right now. 50 at creston. 30's off to the north.

not seeing much by way of gusts. 24 miles per hour gusts done it creston. along with that we have the cloud cover. kind of a mixed bag today. we will be spending today dry but cloudy for pretty much the entire day. 48 is what we are sitting at right now. you can see that thick deck of clouds at the moment. that will persist through out the remainder of the day for us. settle in for the cloud cover. 57 degrees by 4:00 p.m. we keep the warmth all the to 10:00 p.m. we are sitting at 48 the average high is 35 degrees or today. well above that and will maintain the warmth for a while. this will try to do was in by rainfall. you can see fairly slow-moving.

by the evening, that's only look rainfall. cloudy stuff proportions of the state. this will eventually make its way eastward. as it does so, it picks up some pretty heavy rain that will last into saturday night and sunday morning. there will be some spots that do pick up around the 1-3 inches system. if you have plans saturday evening or sunday morning, you of that. there is some potential for light snow on the backside of this for extreme northwestern portions of the state. besides that it will be a wet one this weekend. three interest -- three inches is ottumwa's record. we are sitting more about the 1-1.5 inch range. 57 today. we have clouds and those will be sticking around. look at the warmth.

guest: parork sits well into the holidays. i brought a variety of things. if you're preparing the meal, some ideas for that main entree. maybe some other ideas if you're taking something to a gathering. should we start with the ham? ham is very popular during the holidays. there are lots of different story -- choices of him in the supermarkets. most are fully cooked. all you do is heat them up and add a glaze or you can cover it. you can have the fully cooked boneless ham like this. this is a bone-in ham and there are some spiral hams. you can cover them and put a sauce on them. then you keep them up in the oven.

guest: pork roast. anytime. boneless pork loin roast. it is easy. you can cook it plain. i recommend coating it with seasonings. whatever your family likes. i like italian seasoning. a little bit of garlic. one of the things i you sometimes is flavor enhancers. whatever your family likes. something you can do is stuff it. the easiest way is to cut a slit in the top of the roast. can open it up. the easiest way -- you can also spiral cut it. mollie: you did that one other time.

guest: it is really easy and fun. but your stuffing and there. one thing i like to do is put a little bit of foil over the stuffing when you cook it. pork is really lean and we have new cooking guidelines that came out about a year and a half ago. we recommend cooking pork to medium rare, which is one under 45 degrees. -- 145 degrees. put it in at about 325. you can cook it uncovered and take it up to 145 degrees. let it set for a few minutes and you have a wonderful dish. juicy and tender and perfect. if you don't overcook it, you will keep the juices and flavors in.
