busy stretch of the vegas strip. the driver is being held by police who say the crash was not terrorism, but it was intentional. maurice marona of our las vegas station klax has our report. >> reporter: part of the same las vegas strip was blocked off overnight as authorities began piecing together what led a female driver in her 20s to mow down at least 37 pedestrians near the paris casino sunday night. >> we have determined this is an intentional act. that means that our lvmpd homicide section will be handling the investigation. >> reporter: witnesses were less -- left in shock when a toddler was in the back seat. >> it didn't look like she was trying to stop the car. she had both of her hands on the wheel and was looking straight forward. >> reporter: this is one of several people who tried to stop the vehicle as it drove on the sidewalk, possibly three times. >> i was running down the middle of the street and there was two other guys running with me. we were yelling, like, move, get out of the way, stop! then three guys that were trying

>> reporter: authorities also plan to look for surveillance video in the area. they are also questioning the driver to see if alcohol or drugs played a factor. >> we have a drug recognition, officers that will check to see if the driver of that vehicle was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and we also would either take, you know, blood or breath in regards to see if they were intoxicated. >> reporter: officials say several people remain hospitalized. the driver of the car, along with the toddler, were not hurt. cbs news, las vegas, nevada. a bail hearing is scheduled today for enrique marquez who faces federal charges in the san bernardino shooting. marquez allegedly bought the assault rifles used in the attack that left 14 people dead. he was a childhood friend and neighbor of gunman syed farook and allegedly plotted other attacks that were never carried out.

tim cook on cbsnews.com. now to politics for the republicans. donald trump remains the national front-runner, but ted cruz is gaining ground in iowa and changing his tone. 40% of likely republican caucus voters in a new cbs news battleground tracking poll say they support cruz. he has managed to take supporters away from ben carson and he is doing better with evangelicals. don champion is here in new york with more on that. good morning, don. >> reporter: good morning. it isn't that donald trump is losing ground. the numbers are changing because ted cruz is picking up support. today, cruz is in the middle of a 12-city swing that will take him through the south. >> doing well. having a wonderful sunday in alabama. >> reporter: as he climbs up the polls, ted cruz has taken a page out of donald trump's playbook. an aggressive sharp tone and an effort to stir up supporters. here's what he had to say about president obama's take on foreign policy, specifically his

warming summit. >> what kind of numb skull thinks that the suv in your driveway is a bigger threat to our security than a bunch of lunatics who want to kill us? >> reporter: in iowa and new hampshire, more than 60% of republican voters say terrorism and security are their biggest concerns. yesterday, trump reiterated his call to ban muslims from entering the country. >> the problem is a very serious problem. you have a radicalization of people, they happen to be islamic. >> reporter: fellow republican marco rubio blasted trump. >> he came up with something spectacular and outrageous so that people would respond to it and he could recapture the headlines. it's not a serious proposal. >> reporter: trump's comments have not hurt him. a vast of voters in new hampshire and iowa are glad somebody said them, they need to be discussed.

>> clinton's campaign explained the delay saying the ladies' room was a farther walk from the debate stage than the men's room. the pacific northwest begins christmas week bracing for new wet weather. a series of storms will bring heavy rain, wind and more than a foot of snow to the mountains. a slow moving landslide is forcing residents out of two oregon city apartment complexes. portland is on track for its wettest december on record. spokane, washington, is under a winter storm warning as snowfall blankets that area. meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the holiday week forecast. >> reporter: white christmas, the west is where you want to be. it is essentially a lock, but in the east, about a zero percent chance and this is the reason why. a big surge of warmth again moving its way eastbound and culminating on christmas eve. what is warm in late december is 60s and 70s and even 80s on the eastern seaboard. boston near 70 degrees and new york over 70 and d.c. nearing 80 degrees.

mud. crews are searching for more than 90 people in the mountain of mud and debris. seven people were rescued overnight. a bear attacks a scout leader. and an air scare for air france plane. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the washington post" reports on a phony bomb discovered aboard an air france flight. the boeing 777 bound for paris from an island made an emergency landing in kenya yesterday. a passenger discovered the fake bomb hidden in the airplane bathroom. investigators say it was put there during the flight. the boston herald reports on the closing of all nashua new hampshire, schools on monday, over a threat of violence. the district calls the e-mail threat against two high schools specific and detail. the fbi has joined the investigation into its credibility. more than 11,000 students will be kept home.

the death of jimmy carter's grandson. the 39th president said 28-year-old jeremy died early sunday at the hospital. the cause is unclear. carter shared the news with his church just hours after his grandson's death and then went on to teach sunday school. in the price of oil. u.s. crude prices have dropped about 20% since late november. this morning, crude hit its lowest price since 2008. and that is affecting stock. on wall street, the dow jones lost 140 points for the wem. week. s&p six points lower and nasdaq is 12 points lower. tonight is the biggest night for the u.s. postal service. more than 30 million packages today! nearly 600 million packages are expected to be delivered between thanksgiving and christmas. if you want a package delivered by christmas, the deadline for priority mail express is on wednesday. website opens today. home address, and e-mail address to a national database. a registration number is required for drones weighing from half a pound to 55 pounds. if you already own a drone, you have until february 19th to
