ottumwa is waking up to a gorgeous 49 degrees. you're getting those kiddos all dressed up for school today, they are going to need coats. they will need an umbrella early this morning. headed fororighs close to 40. eric: breaking news right now. a missing person search underway in west des moines. police tell us 20-year-old erica johnson was discovered missing early this morning from 4600 she is four feet 10 -- she is four foot 10 and 100 pounds. if you see her call west des moines police at 515-222-3321. elizabeth: happening right now, students in nashua, new hampshire, are being told to stay home from class today after the district received threats of violence specifically at the two public high schools. police are working to determine if the threats are credible and
district schools today. the closure will affect 17 city schools and more than 11,000 students. and in las vegas police are investigating a deadly car crash that happened on one of the busiest parts of the strip. >> it looked like she wasn't even trying to stop the car. she had both of her hands on the wheel and was looking straight forward. elizabeth: right now police say a female driver in her 20's ran into at least 37 pedestrians outside the paris casino last night, killing at least one person. the woman then took off in her vehicle with a toddler in the back seat. she is in custody this morning and authorities are now looking through surveillance video and trying to find out if drugs or alcohol played a factor. that crash happened in the same block of the strip that the miss universe pageant had just ended. and what appeared to be a repeat win for miss colombia, quickly turned into an embarrassing
>> i have to apologize. the first runner up is colombiaa. miss universe 2015 is philippines. elizabeth: miss colombia had already been crowned and taken her walk as miss universe, when harvey announced he mis-read the note card, and miss philippines was actually the winner. the broadcast ended abruptly as they switched the crown to the correct winner. harvey later apologized on social media. eric: big stories here in iowa the community of spencer is , mourning the loss of a beloved student and well-known athlete. austin roberts passed away saturday night after competing at the spencer invitational wrestling tournament. school officials say the high school senior collapsed on the wrestling mat and was then taken to the hospital where he later died. officials say they still don't know what caused roberts to collapse. the superintendent of spencer school district says he was a student athlete that many
>> he was a place winner in the student wrestling tournament last year and was highly ranked again this year and doing well. liked by his classmates. when austin was in a room and laughed you heard it wherever you were in that room. eric: austin's schoolmates friends and family are coming , together to help cover any medical bills and funeral expenses. a go fund me account has already raised close to $17,000 in over a day. in cedar rapids fire officials are investigating a deadly mobile home fire. it happened last night on the southwest side of the city at grand view village. when crews arrived on scene the back half of the home was engulfed in flames. inside officials found a woman who was pronounced dead at the scene. she has not been identified yet. and this morning two iowa men are recovering after falling through ice sunday morning. it happened at the mills county willow slough wildlife area near henderson. officials pulled both men out of
no word yet on how they are elizabeth: happening today come together for a rally at the state capitol. the leaders of joppa a non-profit organization that works to end homelessness have organized the memorial and rally to show city officials that something needs to be done. a candlelight vigil is planned for 5:30 tonight to remember homeless men and women who have died. organizers say one hour of your time could save lives. >> we have an awesome city its -- awesome city. it is really something people are looking at as a model across the whole country. but we have this dark underbelly that we really need to clear up. we need to do something to treat our homeless citizens the way you and i would want to be treated if we became homeless. elizabeth: this is the 7th annual homeless memorial event. also happening today the west des moines school board will decide if fewer foreign language classes will be offered to students next year. a committee recommended that the district eliminate high school
elementary spanish lessons. the cuts are part of a larger effort to trim hundreds of thousands of dollars from the school bus budget. -- school's budget. eric: community members are using the power of song to fundraise money for jolly holiday lights. about dozen carolers in des moines collected donations for the annual light display after flooding forced it to close early. that flooding put make-a-wish $200,000 short of their funding raising -- of their fundraising goal. >> the spirit of christmas is all about giving back and being thankful for what you have spreading love so i think this is a great way to do it. eric: the carolers raised $430 sunday. they are just one of many community groups showing their support for jolly holiday lights this year. elizabeth: good news for travelers this holiday week. the price of gas nationwide keeps dropping. right now analysts with gas buddy.com say the average price of a gallon of gas has fallen to $1.99. that's the first time the national average has been below

eric: several more stories developing overnight the ntsb and faa are investigating a small plane crash in bakersfield, california. officials say the plane crashed into an almond orchard killing all five people on board after , it sent a mayday call while on route from san jose to henderson , nevada. the names of the victims have not been released but they're believed to be from the san jose area. new information overnight in the paris terror attacks. belgian authorities are expected to release details about a search of a house in belgium that may be linked to the attacks. during a probe of the house one person was detained for sunday, questioning. at least 91 people are missing after a landslide struck shen-zhen china sunday. chinese officials say dozens of buildings were toppled by a wall of mud and debris. the slide was likely caused by a pile of construction waste that grew too steep. so far 13 people were rescued alive and hospitalized. crews are now searching for any more survivors.
company space-x is preparing for a rocket launch. this will be the first launch since a space x rocket exploded on takeoff in june. that rocket was on its way to deliver cargo to the international space station. space x will also try for the 4th time to successfully land a rocket after a flight. takeoff is set for 7:30 p.m. iowa time. elizabeth: economic headlines now wall street will look to , bounce back after stocks closed the week in negative territory. the dow fell about 367 points. the nasdaq lost more than 79. and the s&p 500 was down about 36. several recalls to tell you about this morning. first, fiat chrysler is recalling nearly 56,000 2015 and 2016 jeep cherokee suv's to fix a water leak that could lead to an electrical short. the company says no fires or injuries have been reported. another recall from mitsubishi. the manufacturer says there is an issue with wire corrosion
front air bags. melting snow could soak through the driver's side flood carpet and corrode the wires. the recall affects 25,000 mitsubishi mirages from 2014 and 2015. thousands of cases of dove chocolates are being pulled from walmart shelves. mars says the bags of chocolate assortment snowflakes may accidentally contain some other candies putting customers with allergies at risk. the affected products are only sold at walmart. anyone with allergy concerns should return them for a full refund. as our homes are filling up with holiday decorations and gifts animal hospitals are filling up , with pets. kcci's emmy victor is here to tell us why so many pets are getting sick. what is the problem, emmy? emmy: eric, pets can often be neglected at this time of year. owners have a long list of things to do and a short amount of time to get it done. but keeping less of an eye on our cats and dogs can lead to injuries and illnesses.
