stacey: new halftime, -- new at 10:00, the investigation continues into a deadly christmas day crash near fort dodge. todd: the family of a 6-year-old girl killed says life will never be the same. kcci's laura terrell has the henry family's first interview since the tragedy. >> we were in the car and she was just talking to me like normal, how much she loved her presents and that she was so excited to see her family. laura: it was 10:00 a.m. christmas day when a drive to grandma and grandpa's house turned into a fiery crash. >> i saw the jeep coming at us. i was just waiting for it to go back to it's lane. it just never did. laura: iowa state patrol says 20-year-old ruth tomlinson's jeep crossed the center line on a county road near fort dodge, and hit all 5 members of the henry family head on. >> as soon as i opened up the door i knew that something was , terribly wrong. laura: 6-year-old payton

a bleed on her brain. her family says her body gave out after a day on life support. >> she was there. she was there and then she's gone. her sister and her were very close and now she tells me everyday that she misses her. laura: 3-year-old haley has broken bones and a concussion. 5 --month-old rowan has a broken -- five-month-old rowan has a broken femur. brooke and justin say their broken bones and bruises are nothing compared to the pain of losing their daughter. >> she was the best kid anybody could ever ask for. laura: a gofundme page has already raised more than $27,000 for payton's funeral and the family's medical bills. >> it's just so nice and we never expected these people to reach out like they have. laura: now, the henry family hopes the other driver realizes

mistake. >> think about the six-year-old that lost her life because of her actions. laura: laura terrell, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. todd: iowa state patrol tells kcci the investigation is not yet complete, but charges are pending. stacey: a gruesome discovery in menlo after a farmer learned one of his cattle had been stolen and then butchered. deputies were investigating a break in when they found blood and part of a cow carcass. the thieves allegedly slaughtered the cow on keith partlow's guthrie county property. >> somebody new out to address out an animal, like a hunter or someone who was working or worked in a butcher shop. somebody had to know what they were doing. stacey: the sheriff's office estimates the loss of the cow at about $2,000. stacey: also tonight, hawkeye fans are taking over pasadena. and so is kcci. todd: we have team coverage tonight from the rose bowl. starting with our own steve

finding hawk fans today. steve: they are taking over. southern california is just full of hawkeye fans. they are everywhere. and after they tell you about all the weather-related problems they had getting here they , almost get teary-eyed when they talk about how proud they are of this football team. is it worth it? >> it is worth all the planes, trains, and automobiles. >> i was six years old at my parents house watch it on tv. >> it is the rose bowl and it is the iowa hawkeyes. >> i love the hawks. you grew up in the 70's and 80's, that is all you saw on tv. it is great to be here. i always said that if the hawks got back to the rose bowl, i am going. >> 12-1. we went to the championship game in indianapolis.

to spring, texas. stacey: a frightening experience for a polk city family after a battery for a toy catches fire. the owner says the battery for a high-end remote control car had been plugged in for about three hours when the smoke detectors in his house went off. experts say don't overcharge your batteries and warnings on the charger include never leaving charging batteries unattended. >> obviously there was some , fall somewhere couple whether in my charging it or how it was should end up like this. if nothing else, the battery charger should shut off. stacey: a hobby store owner told us today these fires are rare but he still recommends charging batteries in fire safe bags away from anything flammable. todd: criticizing the clintons. about the democratic front-runner and the former president.

republican nomination before, struggled in the polls, failing to consistently average 1% support. a candidate who is rising in the polls made a couple stops around iowa today. republican presidential candidate marco rubio held a town hall event in clinton and then later an event in waterloo. rubio spoke to reporters outside his event. he says running for president could require him to miss one vote. todd: governor chris christie also in iowa today. at an event in iowa city, the new jersey governor said this election is about who is the best candidate. gov. christie: this is not a game where you're puffing out your chest and who can be the biggest, toughest guy in public. it's about who can run the country. and i believe the people of iowa, like you, and folks in new hampshire, will make that decision based on what they think is best for the country. todd: also new tonight donald , trump says he doesn't see himself running as a third party candidate. trump made the comment as he took questions from reporters on

before a rally in western iowa. stacey: trump is also taking jabs the democratic front runner and the former president. aixa diaz has the story from washington. aixa: donald trump is going after bill clinton, ahead of the former president's debut on the campaign trail. ms. clinton: i need all of you to be part of this campaign. aixa: at a town hall in new hampshire, hillary clinton stayed away from reacting to a series of donald trump tweets about former president bill clinton. mr. trump: she says, oh we'd love to run against trump. it's her worst nightmare. aixa: the republican front-runner has been criticizing the clintons, after she said her husband will hit the campaign trail on her behalf. trump says bill clinton failed badly when he stumped for his wife in 2008 and has a "terrible record of women abuse." >> there's all this stuff in the past, which people don't talk about anymore, and trump is talking about it. aixa: jonathan swan of the hill says trump is bringing up past

from. >> he's the only ruthless candidate who's prepared to do anything and say anything. aixa: but swan says fans of the former president, who wouldn't necessarily vote for his wife, may be motivated to do so after hearing trump's attacks. >> that will inspire people who aren't inspired by hillary clinton, because he already said so much that offends them so deeply. aixa: bill clinton will begin campaigning for his wife next month in new hampshire. in washington, i'm aixa diaz. stacey: on the heels of trump's comments about muslims, interfaith leaders met today in iowa to call for unity. the first muslim to be elected to congress, keith ellison of minnesota, is on a 2 day swing through iowa to support bernie sanders. in des moines today, ellison focused on religious tolerance. >> as some of our political leaders try to divide, you intensify your effort to unite. muslims reach out to your jewish

christian neighbors. this ugly episode that i believe we are going through, which is really appealing to the worst in people, should be an opportunity for us to reach out in the best way. stacey: the minnesota congressman will continue his iowa visit tomorrow with the opening of a bernie sanders office in newton. todd: right now at 10:00, a serious situation in missouri tonight. the death toll from the historic flooding in the eastern part of the state has reached 13. officials say at least 12 drowned when they drove their vehicles into floodwaters. the rain has ended but the national weather service says missouri will face a major to historic river flooding through early next week. stacey: checking back in with kurtis. kurtis: one more system to add to the december precipitation. all that water flows down in the missouri.

one of the wettest years out there at 42.75 inches. we do have a system headed our way. 11:00 p.m., a little bit of snow in northwestern iowa. snowing around 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. clouds hang around for most of the day. we they see a peek at the sunshine. thursday, partly cloudy skies. new year's eve looks dry, just a little bit of cloud cover moving through. for new year's day, looks like we will be bathed in sunshine. not a lot of snow, but it falls during the morning rush. most locations should stay under an inch. better chance of a little more snow up in extreme northwestern iowa. right now, wind chill 17. not a big problem with any blowing snow out there.

hopefully get a good practice in today and just play well. we obviously want to win but we want to play the right way. >> going around, getting stops, creating turnovers, playing the iowa state way. really outplaying teams. that is the key for us going forward. on average, it takes three hundred americans working for a solid year, to make as much money as one top ceo. it's called the wage gap. and the republicans will make it worse by lowering taxes for those at the top and letting corporations write their own rules. hillary clinton will work to close the wage gap. equal pay for women to raise incomes for families, a higher minimum wage, lower taxes for the middle class. she gets the job done for us.
