martin o'malley is at carl's place in des moines at 7:30. steve: meanwhile, a new campaign ad from republican presidential candidate donald trump takes aim at bill clinton's past sexual indiscretions. the former president brushed aside the controversy today to focus on campaigning for his wife in cedar rapids. clinton spoke about his wife's leadership qualities and made remarks about president obama's handling of gun-control legislation. mr. clinton: like any other constitutional rights, it is subject to reasonable checks to see that it's not abused. what the president says is consistent with what 89% of gun owners recently surveyed say that no one should be able to , get a gun without a background check. steve: clinton says his wife also wants to provide more money for mental health services. stacey: right now, a big shake-up at the ymca of greater des moines. president and ceo vernon delpesce stepped down this morning. the resignation is effective immediately.

authorities say the driver was in his 40's or 50's. steve: a lamoni teacher remains on leave while he faces 2 child sex abuse charges in 2 states. william douglas zimmerman was charged with indecent contact with a child in iowa last june. and first-degree child molestation in march in harrison county, missouri. zimmerman is a special education teacher with 26 years experience. he has been on administrative leave since august. a huxley man who was driving with a loaded gun now faces 2 charges of child endangerment. the newton daily news reports that officers found the gun under 38-year-old david sydnes 's seat during a traffic stop last month in colfax. the gun was unsecured, without a trigger lock, and was within reach of the children. authorities say sydnes did not have a permit to carry the weapon and that the gun had been reported stolen by the ames police department. sydnes is now in the jasper county jail.

the joe lopez trial. lopez is accused of killing 20-month-old ruby alvaraz of clive in 2014. we will be in the polk county courthouse tomorrow morning, and we could hear opening statements. stacey: a missing 12-year-old newton girl has been found safe. her mom and her mom's boyfriend are arrested. newton police say 35-year-old kevin carlton and 37-year-old misty shaver were found at a rest area near victor late last night. both were charged on warrants in the disappearance of charlene brown. brown was with carlton and shaver when they were arrested. she is now in dhs custody. brown was reported missing christmas eve. authorities believe she ran away with the couple. a protective order prevented shaver from having contact with brown at the time of her disappearance. right now, crews are still searching for a missing iowa native who disappeared while duck hunting in missouri more than a week ago. 29-year-old adam nixson now lives in pleasant hill, missouri. kelly eckerman of our sister station in kansas city has the

kelly: right now authorities , continue their search at the 4 rivers conservation area in vernon county, near rich hill, missouri. adam nixson went duck hunting december 27 and never returned. his overturned boat and hunting dog were found near a tree line. searchers are using patrol boats equipped with sonar. several land units with k-9 teams have all been part of this massive search for more than a week. flood waters and dropping temperatures are making the search more difficult. i spoke to nixson's father by phone from iowa today. he says the emotions are still too raw to say much, knowing adam's body has not been found. they are staying in contact with the searchers. adam leaves behind his wife lauren and two young sons, 3-year-old james, and one-year-old miles. there is a go-fund me page to establish a scholarship fund for the boys. stacey: that was kelly eckerman reporting. steve: more news right now. ottumwa police are now looking for an armed and dangerous suspect.

is wanted on a parole violation in mahaska county. anyone with information should contact ottumwa police at 641-683-0661. early this morning, police in far southeastern iowa found a man who was shot in the chest 3 times. 2 people wearing masks were seen leaving the home in keokuk, where 32-year-old ian keefe was gunned down. 2 dogs in the home were also shot. the iowa dci is assisting in the investigation. they say the shooting could be connected to another case in illinois. there's no word on keefe's condition tonight. stacey: a fund has been set up to help the family of a man killed in a trench collapse yesterday. 30-year-old justin jorgensen of colfax was killed in the accident at a housing development in altoona. he was employed by jrs excavating of st. charles. crews worked for six hours to recover his body. the accident remains under investigation. you can find a link to the go fund me account for jorgensen's

website, kcci.com. steve: charges are pending following a 2 vehicle crash this morning at southwest 9th and mckinley in des moines. it happened just before 8:30 and blocked traffic for more than an hour. police say an suv traveling eastbound on mckinley, ran a red light, and slammed into a cadillac heading northbound on southwest 9th. the cadillac driver suffered minor injures. the suv driver was not hurt. stacey: ankeny police say their new drug dog, bosco, made a big discovery on his first case. officers say they seized 40-pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $122,000. bosco was a rescue dog from indiana. he joined the department last fall, but he's been training until this month. a city-wide fundraising effort, including help from a 5-year-old boy, allowed the department to add the dog. steve: next at 5:00, stocks slide. the dow suffers its worst drop in months. what's behind the downward trend and how it could affect you.

steve: right now at 5:00, another big drop on the stock market today. the dow jones industrial average saw its worst drop in 3 months. so far, the farther we get into 2016, the farther the stock markets fall. stacey: kcci's shaina humphries explains what's to blame, and and how it could affect you. shaina: it is a scary time for stocks. the 2016 super sell-off continues, after china's stock market crashed 7%. >> there's all kinds of speculation that they could be in for a credit crisis similar to what we had here in the u.s. back in '08. shaina: china's impact is not the only thing driving the markets down. you know these low gas prices we've been enjoying for quite a while now? well that's been happening because the cost of oil is very low, and that cheap energy is making markets tumble even more. >> companies that have depended upon revenues from the energy industry are now beginning to see some of those revenues drop because of what's happening with

shaina: though the indexes are falling at a worrisome rate, they're still not that far from their record-level highs. >> so whenever you have a market that is this close to its all-time high, you should be very cautious and stay on top of it very closely if you're going to need your money soon. shaina: because it's always a cycle, and in this one, it may be time to check your 401k and other investments, see how exposed they are to u.s. and international markets. >> the average person ought to really check into what their excact returns were for 2015, how they are allocated and are , they comfortable with that allocation if we get another 5 % or 10% drop here. shaina: if not, it may be time to make some adjustments. stacey: a look at the other markets today. the nasdaq was down 146.

steve: tonight, president obama will be holding a town hall meeting on gun violence. the event takes place in virginia and will be moderated by anderson cooper on cnn. the nra says it will not be participating in tonight's event because the organization sees this at a "public relations spectacle organized by the white house." cnn says there will be nra members in the audience and they will be able to directly question the audience. 17 miners in new york are home tonight after being trapped in a salt mine. the miners were stuck in elevator about 900 feet underground. it all unfolded in lansing, new york, which is home to the deepest salt mine in the western hemisphere. none of the miners was seriously injured. stacey: iowans have another shot at the powerball jackpot. there were no winners in last night's drawing. the prize for this weekend's drawing has grown to $700 million. lottery officials say it could grow even larger by saturday. steve: all kinds of snow and ice in arizona is shutting down tours at the grand canyon.

shuttle bus service on the south rim of the canyon. schools in flagstaff, arizona have also been closed for a second day. stacey: kurtis, what is ahead for our forecast? kurtis: they had the big pancake snowflakes. that's as it is going to slide our way. a mix in northwestern iowa. some rain here, and i expect it will stay that way until around tomorrow at this time. 36 degrees, east winds at 8. the rain extending all the way down into northern missouri. a little band of some sleet and that is all some light snow to the northwest. up by north towards l dora. -- towards eldora. some snow out there, but temperatures across most of the state are above freezing.

anyone else, anywhere from 34 to 37. it is rain here to the west and northwest. snow in northwestern iowa. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, it will be 34 with more light rain. temperatures tomorrow in the upper -- in the mid 30's. we stay above freezing right through tomorrow afternoon. here's the movement on the rain. so far, anywhere from about 1/10 to about 2/10 of an inch. low pressure will move north and northeast and drag on through. a little bit colder air to the northwest. the low moves north and northeast. eventually, on the backside of this, we will get the changeover to snow. rain tomorrow.

steve: today in the buzz, food facts. stacey: as many kick off post holiday diets, the usda is releasing new rules for a healthy diet. there are some key changes. the basics are, eat fruits, veggies and whole grains. lean meats and eggs are also good. steve: but if you are going to consume sugar and that, do that in moderation. the guidelines say that added sugar should make up less than 10% of your daily calories. that's about 200 calories or a 16-ounce sugared beverage. natural sugar, in foods like raisins, apples, or milk, is not considered added sugar. stacey: there are so many cool things coming out of the consumer electronics show in las vegas this week, including this a high def tv you can roll up , like a newspaper. steve: the 18 inch tv is just one of the concept designs lg is unveiling. or unraveling. it may never even hit stores, lg

what is possible. stacey: a chinese company called ehang is at the consumer electronics show this week with a prototype of a drone that can carry people. the company says the drone can take a passenger to a pre-programmed destination, just push the button to take off and land. steve: it does have some limitations. ehang claims the drone can reach heights of more than 11,000-feet and speeds of 62-miles-per-hour. but it does run out of batteries after 23 minutes. stacey: don't look for the drone at a store anytime soon. the company doesn't have faa approval for the device and hasn't gone into mass production either. steve: little kids love snow, right? stacey: take a look. >> look at all the snow. stacey: many of us can relate. she does not like snow. dad revealed the first snow of the year to his daughter and she

steve: when you call that a meltdown? stacey: now take a look at this. an igloo in the loop. it's at the intersection of wacker and columbus drive in in downtown chicago. steve: beautiful downtown chicago. people originally thought a homeless man may have built the igloo. turns out the creator lives in a building across the street from his new igloo. he says he spent about 15 hours building the structure. it looks like it is going to be there for a wild.
