the moderate snowfall extends all the way to the west to mix master. snow is now coming to an end in dexter. a little more snow on the way. some of those accumulations have been heaviest off to the south and southwest. anywhere from two inches to three inches. just shy of an inch here in the metro area. by the time it is all said and get done central iowa will get about an inch of snow. steve: all the snow started falling in this afternoon. it did cause some problems. the light snow coupled with the stiff wind really reduced visibility at times. the roads in much of central and

stacey: this is the dot road conditions map. areas you see in blue are roads snow. covered. like now in the metro. >> within the last 30 minutes or so the westbound lanes here and i to 35 at 9th street have really improved. i would call this normal winter weather driving conditions. it looks like vehicles are going about 35 miles per hour. quite a difference in the eastbound lanes. slow going, stop and go traffic. that is what you may run into across the metro with a lot of delays. we are hearing that some commutes heading up north were

do expect extra traffic if you are heading home later tonight. we want to show you this video. this is from sw 9th street. the road was pretty clear but certainly still slick even at that hour. i have noticed a lot of these less traveled side streets are completely covered in snow. if you are wondering why you haven't seen any snowplows out yet. is because the snow isn't sticking enough. des moines public works only plows after one inch has accumulated. they really haven't run into that yet. the crews are just throwing down rocksalt. that will hopefully decrease the slipperiness. make sure you give yourself some extra distance if you are behind one of those public works vehicles because that rocksalt

within the last half hour of the east and westbound lanes are partially if not completely covered in snow. the wind is still a factor. that could affect visibility. leave a lot of distance between you and other vehicles. some people are driving too fast for the conditions. stacey: slick and conditions on interstate 80 cause a crash that injured for staff members of the public and presidential candidate ben carson. he canceled his campaign event to visit the staff members and their families. three of them were treated for injuries and another was taken to the medical center in omaha. politics can sometimes bring out the worst in people. steve: a large donald trump sign

this picture of the polarizing politician has become a bit of a landmark. it has also become a target. just the sight of it draws intense reactions. for six weeks now this large picture of donald trump has drawn the attention of northbound traffic is a few blocks from jordan creek mall. >> it seems like he is angry. reporter: he preferred not to reveal his political alliances. saying he only wants to stimulate debate. for six weeks it has gotten a lot of attention. >> people stop and do the selfies and the high fives. reporter: some people smeared chocolate sera and baby food on trumps face. someone spray-painted either a

he says he knew that vandalism was a possibility but he is still disappointed. he didn't call the police, he cleaned up the damage himself. he says he is in favor of free speech. in case you are wondering, that second vendor was not caught on camera. he says he will keep trumps picture up through caucus day. he has contacted a local security company that will keep an eye on that trump sign. stacey: trump is receiving an endorsement from a veteran of republican campaigning. former vice presidential candidate sarah palin has joined the trump team.

sarah palin: it is for crony capitalists to be able to suck off. it is why we see these lousy trade deals that got our industry. for special interests. we need someone new who has the power and is in the position to bust those establishments. to make things great again. it is part of the problem. his candidacy which is a movement is a force, it is a strategy, it proves that as long as the politicos get to keep their titles in their perks and their media ratings, they don't really care who wins elections. believe me on this. the proof of this, look at what is happening today. the whole gop machine, those who would assemble the political

stacey: former vice presidential candidate sarah palin has endorsed donald trump. steve: earlier today donald trump was in altoona for the renewable fuels summit. governor branstad said it would be a big mistake for republicans to support ted cruz in the caucuses. a victory for ted cruz would be damaging to iowa. when asked if he wanted to see ted cruz defeated, governor branstad said yes. amy: it didn't take long for presidential candidates to run with this one. governor branstad:donald trump is talking about his opponent ted cruz. donald trump: he is a respected man and when he talks people listen.

so the remarks did not come as a surprise to many at the summit. >> he comes from an oil state so we don't know what his motivations are. amy: the iowa renewable fuels association says meeting the standard can start with the stance of our future leader. >> if you come to iowa you have to answer these questions. agriculture is important and renewable fuels are important. steve: we were not able to get immediate comment from the ted cruz campaign. he was not invited to the summit. stacey: bernie sanders was and fort dodge today. he told his supporters today that the best bet was to keep republicans from winning the white house was not to back hillary clinton. bernie sanders: from the bottom of my heart above and beyond ideas, if you want some he was going to be donald trump, with the other republicans, i think

stacey: fort dodge was part of the four stop bus tour for sanders today. the search is on for an armed suspect who led deputies on a high-speed chase. the chase started at 3:00 monday morning. the vehicle took off after a short standoff. it reached speeds of up to a hundred miles per hour. the driver abandoned the car. that he's could not find the driver after a nearly four-hour search. marshall county sheriff's believe the driver is this man, 29-year-old thomas daniel sheets. he is believed to be armed and dangerous. fire marshals are on the scene of the massive fire in downtown fort dodge. the building is too badly damaged to go inside. they don't think right now that the fire is suspicious. they say the building will have to be torn down because it is structurally unsafe. an update on a shooting outside

principal. they dropped charges against the former high school basketball player has there was reasonable doubt about who the aggressor in the fight actually was. the fight broke out in front of the home of the glenwood principal. be jim, the stepson of the principal, grabbed a gun after the principal was knocked unconscious. two men were shot and they are recovering from their injuries. iowa state is the latest state school in iowa to knock off the number one team in the nation for basketball. andy garman has more coverage of this later. steve: a central iowa home renovation program uncovers a

stacey: a special kind of treasure found inside the walls of an iowa home. the new couple was led to the stretcher. steve: they discovered something hidden behind the wall near the fireplace. marcus: what kevin brandon found inside this bottle was this letter. he initially hoped for a little more. he says he was not disappointed but excited to share the discovery with his fiancee. >> he came in and said he had a treasure and he was covered in dust. marcus: she couldn't wait to read the letter that was more than 80 years old.

bradley and why she decided to write a letter and put it in the wall to the fireplace. >> i am placing this modeling here is i have read about them doing such things in stories. i hope this letter will that not be hard to decipher. marcus: she passed away in 2014. the couple has been in touch with bradley's children. steve: they have tracked down her daughter who lives in tennessee and a son who lives in burlington. they said they will send them their mother's letter. stacey: the insect was found on the city's west side just south of urbandale avenue. it was found would crews tried to remove a branch from a large ashtray.

trees. curtis: we have snow here the metro is tapering off on the west side. still moderate on the east side. 15 degrees. east wind at six miles an hour. the darker below is the bigger snow flakes out there that are starting to accumulate fairly vigorously. the lighter snow as you head to the north. tapering a bit as you head down south. snow is starting to move out of boonville. downtown to the east side, those of the bigger snowflakes that are accumulate quickly. as you head over to the east to mix master. many locations in the metro now have an inch to slightly more. getting reports on the south side of about an inch and a half. snow is moving out.

snow generally well to the east. there could be some fog tomorrow. the temperature is at 12. a bit of an improvement in the temperature. you can see how it is wrapped up with the heaviest snow just from the metro to the east side. parts of nebraska and dakota clear skies. traveling tomorrow the snow will be over towards indianapolis and detroit. 30 degrees in kansas city. one system down to the south. another system is going to slide by most of the energy with this will stay just to our west and down to our south. warmer days are coming up. you will see have the snow moves out at 9:00 in waterloo. still snowing in ottumwa.

maybe a bit of late day sunshine. early on thursday the snow generally along the missouri river valley. that is where most of it will stay until late thursday nht a little band may drop into the state. snowfall totals, i bump them up for the metro. anywhere from one to two inches. initially it looked like snowflakes were too small. two to four inches down to the south. 12 degrees down to the south later on. a high of 26 tomorrow. thursday not a great chance of snow. here comes the warm-up. into the 30's for the weekend. some light snow as we head into next week. stacey: traffic is still pretty slow out there in the metro. kim: road conditions have really

this is i 235 near 9th street. with the eastbound and westbound lanes have really cleared up. the road is partially if not completely covered in snow and ice. it is going to be slick out there. one other factor is the wind. you can tell it is blowing around the snow. that could affect visibility in some areas. one more thing i want to mention is the side streets. this is what you will find in a lot of these less traveled side streets. completely covered in snow. those will be especially slippery. des moines public works told us they do not have any plans to plow but they will be laying down rocksalt as a preventative measure. be aware of that. leave some extra distance.

andy: what a night it was. what a turnaround it has been for the iowa state cyclones. the team that lost three of their first four games. and looks to be lacking an

last nights win one oklahoma. the first time in 59 years that the cyclones team has knocked off the number one team in the country. they did it with a group effort. all of them playing huge minutes and contributing. the cyclones get the big when and now things look little different heading down the road. >> we had a couple of losses. you can't get them back. you can't live and die in stay in the moment too long. you have to be in this moment. you have to turn the page tomorrow morning. andy: they are getting ready for game saturday against that bottom dweller tcu. as for the iowa, things are rolling along for them. atop the big 10 conference at 5-0.

that can't be said for the rutgers team, the scarlet knights, which is winless in the conference and got beat by 50 points last night, beaten by purdue. the scarlet knights are that bad. >> i think rutgers is much better than they showed last night. you look at the wake forest game. you look at the indiana game. that is more indicative of how rutgers is. >> it is a very good team. you can lose to anybody on any given night. if you don't bring it. especially in the big ten. top to bottom it is the best conference in college basketball. you cannot take a night off. andy: the hawks play the scarlet knights. iowa energy is playing at sioux falls. you can watch that one online. a short stay down under for
