precipitation comes shortly after noon in the des moines area. if you live northwest of the metro, you will have wintry mix earlier this morning. 28, des moines. light fog. if you're in the metro, it is not that bad just yet. roads are wet. watch for apache freezing drizzle to develop this morning. followed by snow this afternoon. a high temperature of 36 in des moines. temps will be falling so the evening commute can be impacted by slick roadways. eric: the winter weather advisory takes into effect. rain and snow possible across the state of iowa. so far, no problems this morning. this is a live look at the cars and trucks out there.

if you are heading out on the roads later this morning, you may start to see some problems. we will keep an eye on the conditions throughout the morning. elizabeth: major airlines have canceled hundreds of flights today as the east coast tries to recover from a massive blizzard. amtrak and bus service are expected to be limited around the region today. the heaviest snow ended up in new york city. 26 inches in central park. american says seven people were taken to the hospital after a plane made an emergency landing in newfoundland. the aircraft landed safely in canada on sunday where it was met with paramedics. three flight attendants and passengers are still hospitalized.

authorities in california are following every lead as they had for three escaped inmates. details are still not known how they escaped. they got a hold of tools and cut through the metal and then repelled from the roof. the men are considered armed and dangerous. back here in des moines, still no arrest in the first homicide in des moines in 2016. norman jean mcneely was found in the basement of her home on pioneer road. on the city's southeast side. authorities were initially called to the home around 4:30 a.m. in the morning. her death was violent and the crime scene stretches west run the home across southeast 14th street. >> it is a large crime scene. evidence we first saw at the

as a process the scene, it took them to an area across the street. elizabeth: we are told that police detectives are making progress and they have interviewed several potential witnesses. fire officials are investigating two overnight fires. the first one was that aurora. firefighters say that one side of the building was on fire when they arrived around one 85 a young this morning. neighbors helped the owners board up their windows. fire investigators are still working to determine exact cause. and marshalltown, fire investigators are trying to find out what sparked the blaze at the pork processing plants. they say it appeared to start in the furnace area. no injuries were reported. eric: moore big stories, a high-speed chase and up with one

jesse leach was driving a stolen marin said man, he was pulled over for speeding on the 65 bypass and then he exited taking off towards des moines. they did eventually catch up to him in the railroad yard. the police department is investigating a large fight that broke out sunday evening. the altercation involved several individuals. it sent at least five people to the hospital. elizabeth: we are just one week away from the iowa caucuses and the candidates are coming out in full force. on sunday, hillary clinton pointed to her leadership experience. some people waiting hours to get in. clinton says voters who are still shopping should be looking for someone that the nation can

hillary clinton: you see what happened in paris and san bernardino. americans want to know the person they make president can deal with these issues, these threats. elizabeth: the latest cnn poll shows bernie sanders leading clinton by eight points. more stars stumping for hillary clinton. jamie lee curtis spoke on sunday. she says clinton is the only real democrat in the race and she is supporting her because of her experience and intelligence. curtis will also be at the office in newton this morning. elizabeth: clinton will join bernie sanders and martin o'malley tonight on the stage at drake university. cnn is hosting the town hall forum. we will be caring the event live. the event starts tonight at 8:00. the republican side, donald

it poll shows 34% of likely caucus-goers support the billionaire. ted cruz is in second place. marco rubio has 12 and dr. ben carson has seven. on top of tonight's democratic for them, clinton, sanders, and o'malley all have multiple stops across the state. ben carson will be stopping here in the metro. mike huckabee and marco rubio will also be in des moines and carly fiorina will be at oh seal letting council bluffs. we are keeping our eye on the forecast. metinka: the roads could get slippery by late afternoon. the evening commute will be different than the morning when. precipitation is still off to the northwest. it is snowing across much of south dakota and rescue.

that will be pulling into iowa in the next several hours. headed for a high in des moines of 36 around noon. freezing drizzle will change over to light snow, and will be blown around by the evening commute. we have a great-looking warm-up headed our way. elizabeth: starting this morning, local school-age kids will be getting forced and knowledge of what to do if a disaster strikes. eric: this comes after several house fires have devastated communities across the area. >> it is called the pillowcase project. a proactive program that originated after hurricane katrina. it helps teach kids how to prepare and cope with a disaster. the american red cross is teaming up with mercy college

life-saving tips to kids ages 8-11. the program focuses on home fires, the most common disaster they will face. they will address other issues -- other disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes. inside the kids they recommend food, water, blankets, cash, and a first aid kit. >> with the disasters we face in the midwest being tornadoes and floods, they can be horrific. it allows them to learn coping skills. >> starting today, the program is heading to all of the johnston elementary schools and will also make it to lovejoy elementary school in des moines. we will hear how mercy college is preparing their students. elizabeth: still ahead, a big

you can see the inches and inches of snow hireling up. a cool view. metinka, we will not have much piling up. metinka: nothing like that is heading our way but we will have some light wintry mix and a little bit of light snow later. i head of this band of snow, we will have some patchy, freezing drizzle breaking out across west central iowa and the holes is the will be spreading in here by late this afternoon. road conditions will be a concern late this afternoon. we do have some fog out there to the north of des moines. that could slow you down a little bit. roads are damp. by noon, we will have the wintry mix. des moines, 36 this afternoon. the wind will be switching back to the northwest and temperatures will tumble.

elizabeth: how about those hawkeyes. they are now 7-0 in the big 10. they won 13 straight big ten games 80 back to last year. last time that happened was back in the 1969-19 70 season. iowa started a game on a 7-0 run. purdue led, 33-30 at the half. hawkeyes then went on a run to start the second half, going on to win it, 83-31. >> it is a great start. we still have a lot of work left. we are not even halfway through the big ten season. we are sitting at a good spot. elizabeth: here is where they stand now, tied for first in the big ten with the indiana hoosiers. they hit the road this week but

the gray shaded areas will have dense fog. travel will be trickier. central iowa, is pretty quiet. we are waiting for the system to arrive. it is still snowing across south dakota and minutes noted. ahead of it is the portion of moisture coming in from kansas city. that will be patchy, freezing drizzle. that should occur around 8:00 a.m. this morning across central iowa. in des moines, temperature will be close to or slightly above freezing. we will get light drizzle here in the metro. wintry mix to the west. light precipitation is expected today. from 1:00 on. we will see a few snowflakes mixed in near fort dodge. the evening commute could be interesting as it all switches

winds that will call -- cause blowing snow concerns as well. snow will taper off around 9:00 p.m. we may get only .1 of an inch. a couple of places in the state could pick up slightly heavier amounts. the that -- right now in des moines, the roads are damp and 27 degrees. light fog. heading to 36 degrees around noon and then temperatures will be falling as the light snow moves in. that will move out by later this evening and tomorrow will be blustery. get ready, a nice warm up headed our way. elizabeth: let us check in with shaina. sheena: -- shaina: you should not be slowed down at all.

bottom line, if you are traveling, it is best to check ahead of time with your carrier. we can tell you limited air service has resumed along the east coast in cities like philadelphia, new york, and baltimore. anyone taking amtrak, it is also operating on a reduced to schedule. elizabeth: how much of snow did you actually get in washington? nikole: the official tally is just under 18 inches. for us, this is quite a bit of snow. i can tell you that there is some question about how much snow we actually got because other parts of the city got much more. where i live, i got 27 inches. not clear why there are some disparities. what we can tell you is that the

got lost in the blizzard and weather observers are saying their readings are still accurate in spite of the conditions. eric: not good when you lose your ruler. your couple of blocks away from the president. is the weather impacting his plans? nikole: it does not seem to be. he has an event on his schedule today. he will brave the elements and head out later this afternoon to walter reed where he will meet with wounded troops. we can tell you that the white house is again canceling its daily briefing. that is something they also did on friday. elizabeth: 70, dozens of people were killed. nikole: unfortunately, many people lost their lives through shoveling. it happens when we have big

eric: we are watching weather conditions live across the state. here is a look at the traffic camera near i-80. look at this d.o.t. picture from the sioux city area. pretty telling. all iced over. you cannot see from the camera. checking statewide road conditions, it is showing completely covered roads in far northwest iowa now. not a lot of accumulation expected with this weather but it could make things tough later today. be sure to stick with us to find out what is going on. elizabeth: right now, millions of the east coast are getting ready to try to get back to work today. that might be tricky because many roads there are slick and snow covered. two feet of snow in washington,

turbulence on an american airlines flight. it was from miami to milan. >> i never took the bumps like that. >> everything was flying. it was intense. elizabeth: those are just a few of the passengers talking about the wild ride. the turbulent was so intense, the pilot made an emergency landing in newfoundland. we have been checking with des moines police and no arrest yet the latest homicide. an elderly woman was found dead in her home. >> we are getting a lot of physical evidence. elizabeth: norma jean mcneilly was found at pioneer road early sunday morning. police were called their for a welfare check. it is a large crime scene. neighbors tell us she kept to

two overnight fires, this one in aurora. firefighters say one side of the building was on fire when they arrived around 1:45 a.m. this morning very the nice neighbors helped the owners or that their windows overnight. everyone out safely. in marshalltown, fire investigators are trying to find out what sparked the blaze at the work assisting plant. it appears that the fire started in the furnace area. with so many fires in iowa in the last two weeks, officials are starting a new effort to make sure families are prepared. what will be happening? >> for the first time as part of the curriculum, young, local students will be learning how to repair for a disaster like a home fire.

we are expecting light precipitation but just a little bit is needed to make the roads slick. an inch or more of snow. north west iowa where a band could be setting up with heavier totals. some locations creating some patchy, freezing spots on the road because temperatures are below freezing. the main system is to the west and northwest and will be working in here for the afternoon. we are releasing some freezing mist creating some lightly iced roadways. the foggiest weather is off to the northwest. the roads are looking for us to this morning. the winter weather advisory continues to midnight in northwest des moines.
