road conditions and show you can see many roads to the north are still partially covered that in central iowa and the south of the metro area, roads are back to normal. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. we begin with good news, make sure you have plenty of windshield washer lewis because a warm-up is on the way that will make things very messy. let's begin with frank with more on that. frank: i washed my car this morning and i'm already regretting it because those roads are just dirty that slushy stuff. 28 is the temperature in des moines right now and that will be steady around 30 degrees for the rest of the afternoon. you probably noticed the wind out of the northwest, it will be a breezy afternoon. we might wrap in a few flurries this afternoon, but otherwise we stay locked in with clouds and could he more sunshine, tomorrow. a chilly breeze and 29 degrees,

factor, by 5:00 it will feel more like 16 degrees and the wind district to calm down a little bit. we have 30's and 40's and could be close to 50 in the 8 day forecast. mollie: breaking news happening right now, officials at the naval medical center in san diego syrian active shooter has been reported and urging in time to quote run, hide or fight. the navy hospital posted the update on their official facebook page, saying the shooter was reported in one of the buildings on campus. the building houses offices and barracks for wounded sailors and marines as well as a gym. law enforcement arrived at the scene in patrol cars and humvees after a report of gunfire. so far there have been no reports of injuries or any arrests. we are monitoring the situation and will bring you an update as it occurs. authorities in buffalo county are holding a news conference to announce that two arrest have

long cold case there. they were arrested in connection with an arson fire in 2006. we have a crew in wapello county right now. look for an update on this story later in the newscast, as well as at our website kcci.com. turning to commitment 2016 news, a new quinnipiac university poll released this morning shows donald trump with a very slim lead over ted cruz. trump at 31%, cruz at 29%. marco rubio is in third with 13%. no other candidate is above 7% on the gop side, but the poll shows these likely caucus-goers may not be entirely committed to a candidate. 39% of those who named a candidate say they still might change their mind before the caucus. the time for polls and mud-slinging is almost over as the iowa caucuses are now less than a week away. edward lawrence has more on what the candidates are doing to win over last minute supporters. edward: with just six days to go until the first votes are cast

can see the finish line. >> we're in the final sprint. >> this is now crunch time, this is crunch time right. edward: the latest poll out this morning shows donald trump has now regained a lead in iowa but ted cruz is within the margin of error so trump isn't pulling any punches, including his favorite jab, pointing out cruz's birthplace. >> he's candadian, the man from canada. he could run right now for prime minister of canada, he'd have no problem. edward: cruz is hitting back with a series of t.v. ads, including this one aimed at iowa's evangelical voters. >> look, i am pro-choice in every respect. edward: and cruz says there's a reason the establishment is lining up behind the businessman. >> trump will cut a deal. trump will expand government spending, expand the debt. continue the cronyism. edward: the democratic side is just as tight with hillary clinton and bernie sanders in a dead heat, but sanders has been gaining ground on clinton in iowa. >> i think we are touching a nerve with the american people who understand that establishment politics is just not good enough. edward: clinton tried to reassure one young voter that

her are because she's the real change candidate. >> i've been on the front lines of change and progress since i was your age. edward: clinton trails sanders for young voters but historically that's a group that doesn't show up to caucus. mollie: schools are letting out early in marshalltown. not because of weather, but for two high profile candidates. republican front-runner donald trump is holding a rally at the marshalltown high school roundhouse gym today at 5:00 p.m. and later, hillary clinton will also hold a rally at miller middle school in marshalltown at 8:30 p.m. marshalltown school officials decided for the early out in anticipation of the extra traffic expected for the two events. our crews will be there tonight. look for updates from laura terrell tonight at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00. bernie sanders, mike huckabee, marco rubio, and ben carson all have campaign events in the metro today.

carly fiorina will be making stops in other parts of the state as well. the woman who maintained a peace protest outside the white house for more than 30 years has died. she was a spanish immigrant known to many as connie,or conchita. her 3-decade-plus demonstration is widely thought to be the longest running political protest in u.s. history. officials say she recently suffered a fall but her immediate cause of death isn't known. there's another water crisis unfolding in the wake of water contamination in flint michigan. the head of ohio's epa is asking for a criminal investigation after the operator of the water plant allegedly failed to notify people they may be drinking contaminated water. dangerous levels of lead and copper were found in homes last summer, but no warning was given until last week. schools are canceled there for the third day in a row the state will hold health screenings for kids instead today. the treatment plant manager is denying the allegations, which include falsifying reports about

being detected in some homes last summer. a dramatic new warning issued today about the danger posed by one of the escapees in a southern california jailbreak. an orange county prosecutor is quoted as saying, "they let hannibal lecter out." authorities say the 3 escaped men are among 15 prisoners who've escaped through the roof since the jail opened in 1968. mireya villarreal has the very latest on the manhunt. >> we know somebody out there knows something. mireya: the orange county sheriff's department repeatedly asked the public for help monday and sent a message to the , vietnamese community. >> it is extremely important for them to reach out to us and let us know because they are extremely armed and dangerous. mireya: 20-year-old jonathan tieu, who is facing murder charges, is linked to a vietnamese gang. bac duong is also thought to have gang ties. the 43-year-old was being held on attempted murder charges.

accused of kidnapping and torture. in 2012, nayeri, along with an accomplice, allegedly tortured a man with fire. >> i'm scared. mireya: people who live in the community near the jail are frightened. >> if these people are that bad, how did they get out of jail? >> he is incredibly violent. jonathan: orange county -- mireya: orange county prosecutor heather brown says nayeri's trial is set for next month. >> the acts he committed are nothing short of diabolical. mireya: authorities believe the men escaped from the central men's jail friday morning. the escapees cut their way through a steel screen and entered the building's plumbing tunnels. law enforcement says the group rapelled off the roof, down nearly 5 floors, using a make-shift rope made of linens. investigators are trying to find out how they got their tools, and if they had help getting out. right now, the sheriff's does confirm no one from the office

>> this is iowa's news leader, this is kcci eight news at noon with mollie cooney,. mollie: in an effort to make his country more visible after a recent nuclear deal, iran's supreme leader visited pope francis at the vatican today. in doing so, the iranian leader asked pope francis to pray for him. the two talked privately this morning as part of a four-day european swing aimed to help position tehran as a player in middle east peace efforts. jonathan: the meeting between pope francis and iranian president hassan rouhani began with a handshake, and then moved to the pope's study in the vatican where rouhani gave the catholic leader a persian rug. the 40-minute discussion kicked off a european tour rouhani hopes will position iran as a key player in middle east peace

the vatican says tehran should play a major role in fighting terrorism. rouhani says his country is now the safest and most stable in the region. he wants to end decades of diplomatic distance with the west over its controversial nuclear program. iran recently agreed to limit the program in exchange for sanction relief. this is the first time in nearly two decades that a pope has met with an iranian president. pope francis told rouhani he hopes for peace, and the iranian asked the pope to pray for him. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news. mollie: to make sure the leader of the islamic republic would not be offended, the italians covered nude roman statues in museums. the u.s. has taken another step to improve relations with cuba. starting tomorrow, the treasury department is getting rid of financing restrictions on most exports. the u.s. also will allow more cuban commodities to be

while americans still can only travel to cuba under specific guidelines, they will be allowed to do more while in the country. it could be a milestone in olympic history. transgender athletes could be set to compete in this summer's olympic games, without having gender reassignment surgery. the proposed rule change by international olympic medical chiefs would establish hormone based critieria. transgender athletes have been allowed in the olympics since 2004, but only after surgery, and two years of hormone therapy. east coast cities hit hard by the massive weekend snowstorms selling evening -- getting back to normal. schools and the federal government remained closed for the most part but the subway , system is close to being fully operational. subway and bus service in new york city got back up and running much faster, while southern new jersey is cleaning up from flooding caused by the storm.
