of that, and the significant snow headed our way next week, coming up shortly. todd: new poll numbers just into the newsroom from the "des moines register." donald trump now leading on the republican side here in iowa. he has 28% of likely voters. ted cruz is in second with 23%. marco rubio now in third with 15%. by the way, ted cruz fell just short of begging a crowd of about 400 today in ames to caucus for him monday night. kcci's kim st. onge is in studio with his message to iowans in this final stretch. kim: cruz challenged the rowdy crowd to bring nine people along with them to caucus. cruz says that's the ticket to him winning the republican nomination. sen. ted cruz: we will win the nomination. and we will go on to win in 2016, beat hillary clinton, and turn this country around. kim: ted cruz supporters packed the gateway hotel in ames, forcing dozens to watch from the hallway. jeff: he doesn't trash anybody, he runs a very positive campaign, and i like it.
caucus for cruz months ago. he's determined to convince others to do the same. jeff: i'm gonna call friends, family. everybody's gonna be there. kim: cruz spent the most time telling supporters his plans as president, including ending common core, repealing obamacare, and destroying isis. sen. cruz: our constitutional rights are under assault each and every day, because america is receding from leadership in the world. and yet, i'm here today with a word of hope, encouragement, and exhortation. laura: he wants to help our country in every way. i just haven't disagreed with anything that he's said yet. kim: laura suckow brought along her two daughters. this will be kimberly's first caucus. kimberly: his respect for other people, and just his dignity really, and his reliance upon it is just really important. kim: in a state where every vote counts, cruz just won over one more iowan. stephanie: mom invited me, because i was on the fence before coming to it. but now, he sold me.
glenn beck was also there today, after recently endorsing cruz. and one more interesting thing about today's rally. cruz didn't mention trump's name once. todd? todd: that is interesting. thank you. a cruz campaign flyer is taking some iowans by surprise. some voters received this flyer in the mail, giving a grade on their past voter turnout record. but one voter tells us it feels like a personal attack that he and his neighbors all received an f grade. kcci spoke with a cruz campaign spokesman, who tells us using "civic guilt" is an effective way to persuade voters to caucus. he says it's based off of a republican party flyer from 2014. well, cruz's main rival in iowa, donald trump, held a campaign rally in dubuque today. trump again brought up the fact that cruz was born in canada, questioning how he is eligible to run for president. trump also defended his decision to not participate in thursday's fox news debate. donald trump: i think the debate turned out to be good, that i didn't do it.
boring, boring. that was a hard thing to watch, wasn't it? but it wouldn't have been hard. if i was there you would've liked it, right? todd: trump also had a rally today in clinton and one in davenport. he says he plans to stay in iowa through caucus night. florida senator marco rubio is putting in a last-ditch effort to win over iowa voters before the caucuses. the rubio campaign is airing a half-hour television special in every media market in iowa this weekend. the first special aired today in sioux city. tomorrow, the specials will air in des moines, cedar rapids, and davenport. caucus-goers can call or tweet in their questions for the republican hopeful. rubio spoke to voters today at a rally in sioux city, telling them he believes he is the only one who can beat the democratic nominee, come november. sen. marco rubio: there is a reason why hillary clinton spends more, and her super pacs spend more time attacking me, than any other republican. because they don't want to run against me. but i can't wait to run against her. [applause]
[applause] we can't lose this election. if you nominate me, we win. they know this. todd: now, rubio is in des moines tonight for a rally at the ramada inn on merle hay road. that starts at 7:00. and we do have those numbers on the democratic side. hillary clinton is on top with iowa voters. she has 45% of likely voters. bernie sanders is in second, by just 3 points, at 42%. and martin o'malley is still in a distant third with 3%. welcome the last few days, hillary clinton's e-mails have been back in the headlines. she never sent information on her personal account, that was classified at the time. she talked about her e-mails today in a one-on-one interview with our steve karlin, following a campaign rally in ames. sec. hillary clinton: i think voters are pretty smart. with benghazi, they saw me
is all retroactive. there was nothing marked classified at the time. todd: you can see more of steve karlin's one-on-one interview with hillary clinton tonight, on kcci 8 news at 10:00. clinton did not focus on her e-mails during the rally in ames, though. instead, she and former arizona congresswoman gabby giffords focused on gun control. clinton highlighted the differences between her policy on gun safety, versus that of bernie sanders. sanders is also in iowa today. he spoke in manchester this morning, telling supporters what it will take for him to beat clinton on caucus night. sen. bernie sanders: right now, if the election were held today, i would say it's a toss-up. some polls have us a little bit ahead. some polls have secretary clinton a little bit ahead. virtually tied. we will win the caucus on monday night, if there is a large voter turnout. we will lose the caucus on monday night, if there is a low voter turnout. todd: sanders also spoke about the 2008 election of president obama.

two remaining fugitives who broke out from a california jail last week are now in custody. police found 37-year-old hossein nayeri and 20-year-old jonathan tieu in san francisco this morning. the two men escaped with 43-year-old bac duong on january 22. duong surrendered to police friday. back here in des moines, police are still looking for a pair of robbers who held up a central bank friday. it happened on university, just east of 42nd street. officials tell us two men entered the back entrance of the bank. one robber showed a handgun and ordered everybody to get on the ground. after getting some cash, the two men ran out the back. if you have any information, you can call police. central iowa middle and high school students got a unique opportunity at john deere financial in johnston this morning. more than two dozen teams of students designed, built, and tested robots to compete against each other in the fourth annual first tech challenge league championship. the winners will qualify for national and international
they've been working on these robots since the beginning of the school year, often competing in local meets. ann: this is a lot of fun. and it's great to see the excitement about stem, about engineering. that is what john deere is about. and it helps us know what we are putting our money and time towards is going to, hopefully, help future employees out of it, as well. todd: the first tech challenge is part of john deere's global initiative to inspire stem, that is science-technology-engineering-m science-technology-engineering-m ath careers and education in young people. checking back in with jason for a weather update now. jason: nothing quite so formidable right now, but we do have light precipitation that is trying to fall off to the north. throughout the morning hours, we will bring a chance through the northern portion, could see a bit in the metro. a few areas off to the south,

and throughout the beginning of the work week, too. we see the signs of moisture, at least the first signs of ahead of that system monday evening. here is the overnight tonight, you can see we start to clear out a bit behind it. i think it is overdue in that clearing, however. we should stay mostly cloudy. futurecast bringing that light shower activity. here off to the north, plan on snow mixing in. futurecast showing clouds surge back in, and as we head to monday evening, we start to see the first signs of that system here. that will really start to drive in late morning and early afternoon, likely seeing quite a bit of snow out of this little guy. how much exactly can we expect? some spots have the potential to pick up over a foot. bringing the bulk west of the metro, and i really think we going to see more than the 1.8
