we start with breaking news. homes in castle rock are evacuated as officials investigate suspicious chemicals. the fbi and atf are now part of that investigation. >> that scene is still very active right now. the chemicals were found inside a home how did police even find the chemicals. >> as you mentioned two dozen homes have been evacuated. castle rock police, fire even the douglas police out here. this all started when police went to the home to contact the

yesterday. that's when they found the chemicals. >> they found a number of chemicals, thins that looked suspicious. they didn't think they had the resources to get those chemicals. >> we haven't been told exactly what the chemicals are but firefighters and the douglas county bomb squad did not feel comfortable continuing this case. so that's when the fbi and the atf were brought in. we're told they have more so dealing with here. we talked to neighbors and they say they don't really know the people who live at the house and we haven't been able to find anyone who knew of any children or teenagers being in or around that house. police aren't saying much about those juveniles that were arrested overnight. but they are saying that this scene and this evacuated neighborhood could go on for several more hours possibly into tuesday morning. we will stay on scene and bring you the latest on a cbs4 news at 10:00.

the victim has just been identified as 23-year-old aricela esparza miranda. the coroner says she was strangled to death. in evans around 1:00 this afternoon, a ford mustang was going southbound crashed into a chevy tahoe going eastbound. the driver of the mustang died. three other people in that car are in the hospital with critical injuries. the driver of the chevy tahoe was also taken to the hospital. police are looking into what caused that crash. and this is the nen deadline to register to vote. if you want to get a ballot mailed to you here in colorado, but remember in our state you can register to vote in person right up through election day. so far though, more than 866,000 coloradans have returned their mail in ballots. 331,000 are from registered democrats. 300,000 from republicans and nearly a quarter of a million of the return ballots are from

open senate seat appears to be tightening. >> michael bennett is running against darrelle glen. our political specialist sean boyd breaks down the new poll numbers tonight. >> this poll the first to show this race may be much closer than we anticipated. previous polls have shown democrat michael bennett trouncing glen. bennett has only a five the incumbent has 46% and glen 41%. it's just outside of the four point margin of error. 14% of those polled are unsure or will vote for someone else. the poll also shows support appears to be split with voters 45 and over. and while darrelle glen has strong support among men more moderate side with michael bennett. jim and karen. >> thank you, sean. this election day five more states will be voting on whether to legalize recreational marijuana. and now and how it's gone in

take highway 9 over to 285. it's going to be a bit of a detour but you might not end up getting stuck in those two hour delays. we're live, matt kroshel. we continue with this hot dry weather. >> warm and dry around here. very warm to end the month. some clouds over in the southeast really it's all we've got going on. on the hour by hour forecast. you see these showers just don't last very long. staying sunny here on the eastern plains. rolling in wednesday. same situation, mixture of clouds and sunshine. maybe some clouds and showers. some of that moisture won't even hit the ground. we roll it to thursday, plenty of sunshine around the state. maybe southwest sees a sprinkle that is it. red flag warning for south eastern colorado. this goes until7:00. we have a front now that's just about to push through our area and that will cool us down. but we have been under the

and that has kept us pretty warm. let's go back to lauren whitney in the colorado weather center. lauren now that we've had the last day of october. it was a pretty warm month. >> it was a pretty warm month. it's our second warmest october on record. chris spears and i were just out here crushing our numbers. our average temperature for october on this month was 57.9 degrees. we've hit that two other times in our history since 1872. it was a warm month for calendar. take a look at all the days and month that is were above average temperature. all the red days you see here. we had nine 80-degree plus days. there were only a handful of days that we were above average. two days later, we were almost 40 degrees warmer back in the mid-80s. lots of warm temperatures for us. it's been a very dry month as well. we ended the day or ended the month again with 79 degrees. that was actually another
