for the hawkeyes and boilermakers.. .we'll show you how fans prepared for the big game. you're watching kcrg-tv9. now, from your 24 hour news source, this is the kcrg-tv9 saturday morning news. good morning and thanks for joining us. we begin with first alert storm team meteorologis t britley ritz. we are waking up to the coldest temperatures we have seen so far this season. lows bottomed out below zero for some overnight and this morning. with the slightest breeze temperatures will feel like they are significantly colder. make sure to dress in layers and keep warm. with some sunshine and a southwest wind our temperatures will rebound back into the upper 20s this afternoon. partly cloudy skies will dominate the skies for the next few days. these clouds will actually help hold the
heat, allowing for temperatures to become warmer by monday. thanks britley. the snow storm created a travel nightmare for people flying in and out of the eastern iowa airport. and it caused chicago's two airports to cancel more than 500 flights. three of those were headed to cedar rapids. iowans also had a mess to drive through. plow trucks spent the entire day clearing the roadways. towing companies went out to find cars stranded in ditches and medians. linn county issued a tow ban on friday as the storm intensified, and that went until saturday afternoon. this left one man's 19-year- old son stuck, after he lost control of his car. 12:51:26 "i didn't have my cell phone on me and my wife works overnight so she didn't have her cell phone on her. so the police ended up bringing him home." most of the main roads in linn county were cleared
by mid afternoon. however, many slick spots remained on back roads and side streets. the storm system that left iowa drifted over wisconsin, and it wasn't all bad. it provided plenty of fresh powder for kids to sled on in milwaukee. parts of illinois and indiana also got several inches. snow totals in the northern suburbs of chicago topped forecast predictions of 6 to 10 inches. about 12 and a half inches fell in some spots, by the end of the storm. this commercial building that burned for 6 hours in waterloo is a total loss. the waterloo cedar falls courier reports the fire started at con-trol container systems on the 16- hundred block of grandview avenue around 5-30 friday night. wind and snow provided a challenge for firefighters as they tried to get the fire under control. con-trol used the 9- thousand square foot facility to weld together metal storage racks. the state fire marshal's
office is investigating the cause. hawkeye fans didn't see too much snow on the field, as iowa took on purdue inside kinnick stadium. that's because crews spent most of friday night scouring the field several times. this is a lapse video from the university of iowa. you can see snow removal teams going back and forth, and then the snow filling in behind them. the field was clear in time for kickoff at 11 o'clock saturday. the snow and cold air didn't stop tens of thousands of fans from going to the game. several fans said the drive was more treacherous than usual, but once they got to the stands, a lot of the snow had already been cleared out. one u-i faculty member says she and about 20 of her students spent their morning welcoming fans to the game, and thanking them for braving the chilly conditions. championship berth were on the line today for the iowa football team against purdue. not even mother nature would slow the hawkeyes down. scott saville has the highilghts. 3 hours before kickoff it was the frozen tundra of kinnick stadium but thanks to some quick efficient work it was in great shape by game time. the sun came out as fans said good bye to 21 seniors including drew ott who came out in. street clothes. the iowa offense was clicking on all cylanders cj beathard hits senior tight end henry krager coble for big yardage. and that set up leshun daniels with the two yard touchdown run. the iowa d started off hot too. parker hease with the sack. and another daniels td run from 13 yards out made it a 14-nothing game. and that had them celebrating with snow balls. and
lomax forces the fumble and knocks out starting pudue qb david blough.. i just saw an opening and came up and made the hit you destroyed him and desmond recovered. and that set up beathard to matt vandeberg 7 yards for the 20-nothing second quarter lead. but purdue didn't go down easily this hit on beathard took knocked the wind out of the iowa offense. purdue cut the lead to 20-10 at the break on this field goal. and after boilers made it a 7 point game in the third the iowa offense gained a second wind. cj hits a wide open george kittle over the middle and he races 35 for the score and a 27-13 lead. you had to be patient. yes i had to wait for the safety to clear once he bit i went. and it was a big day for the iowa tight ends. beathard finds krager coble for 6. back to back td"s for the cousins. i had never scored a touchdown
in kinnick stadium to do it in my final game was awesome. and another senior capped off the scoring jordan canzeri bust one 42 yards for the touchdown. jordan with a special senior day had 95 yards rushing. it won't hit me until i leave the gates this was my final game at kinnick stadium the hawkeyes were jumping for joy after the 40-20 win to go to 11-0. they held a private trophy celebration in the lockeroom after the game it was was really exciting to play our final game at kinnick and do this. it was surreal to do what we did and end it like this. it was
coaches. according to the players it got pretty emotional in the the lockeroom during the trophy celebratiion with coach ferentz tearing up. but even more important than the trophy they have a date in the big 10 title game in indianapolis. scott saville tv 9 sports. ... the north carolina men's basketball team lost to iowa state in the ncaa tournament two years ago, then to iowa last season. northern iowa was looking to make it 3 for 3 today. ... this game was live on kcrg 9.2... linn-mar grad marcus paige dressed, but did not play today for the tar heels ... 1st half action, cedar rapids washington grad wes washpun drives and says get out of my way... left-handed jam... panthers trail by 5 ... 2 seconds left before halftime... washpun launches it beyond half- court... cha-ching... nothing
had 21... uni trailed 41-32 at the break ... the tar heels had a 14-point lead early in the 2nd... but the panthers make a 20-4 run... jesperson knocks down the trey... then washpun kicks it out to iowa city west grad jeremy morgan in the corner... panthers down by 4 ... 2 minutes left... tied at 63... linn-mar grad matt bohannon buries the three at the top of the key to put uni up by 3 ... closing seconds, tar heels going for the tie... joel berry misses the three... north carolina gets the offensive board... but jeremy morgan comes up with the steal to seal the deal... uni upsets number one north carolina 71-67 "i got to the locker room and just sat there, looked this? the way it into words. being down 16 and then coach calling a timeout and gets after us. we come together and tell

"without them up front i wouldn't be able to make the plays i do. every time i don't make a play they get mad cause they're going so hard, so i was glad i was able to score on the punt return. there's a lot of guys on that team that are extremely elated off that. i was just excited to score and get the guys happy on that team." after southern illinois scores a pair of touchdowns to get within 7, bailey whips one out to daurice fountain....fou ntains takes care of the rest...uni up 35-21....then bailey adds the second of
his three rushing touchdowns and uni beats southern illinois 49-28 and the panthers should be headed to the playoffs. "there was none bigger than today and they stepped up today. i just feel good cause our offense is playing good, we've got a good rushing attack, our defense is good." ... 2nd quarter... iowa state up 14-7... joel lanning steps up and fires a laser to allen lazard... he fights off a defender, 30- yard touchdown... cyclones up 21-7 ... k-state returned the kickoff for a touchdown... but the clones respond... mike warren busts through the left side... and he is gone... 76-yard touchdown untouched... warren finished with 195 rushing yards... iowa state leads 28-14 ... final seconds of the first half, lanning throws it in the corner to lazard... he gains control, keeps the left foot down for his 2nd touchdown of the game... cyclones led 35-14 at halftime ... but kansas state came back in the 2nd half... in the final minute, the wildcats scored 10 points off two iowa state turnovers... kansas state comes back to win 38-35

non-stop friday night into saturday morning, to clear the football field before iowa battled purdue. after one layer of snow was gone, another one fell. all their hard work was worth it...the hawkeyes beat the boilermakers 40-20 to go 11-and-0. another win for an iowa team this weekend, the university of northern iowa's mens basketball team pulled off a big upset. yesterday afternoon, they faced the number-1 ranked north carolina tar heels inside the mccleod center. after trailing the tar heels by sixteen points going into the second half, u-n-i came back to win the game 71-to-67. "commentator screaming: "uni has done it. north carolina
loses!" this is the eighth time in school history that u-n-i has beat a number-1 ranked team. one the edge of growing poll numbers, florida senator marco rubio is campaigning hard to win the affections of iowa voters. rubio criss-crossed his way around eastern iowa his campaign stops was the hotel at kirkwood in cedar rapids. over the last 30 days, rubio has moved up to double- digits in republican state polls, for the upcoming iowa caucuses. he has anywhere from 10% percent up to 18% support. in front of a crowd of about 200, rubio offered familiar talking points, including the nation's debt ceiling. " the cause of our debt crisis in the long term is the way social security and medicare are structured for future generations. we just don't have enough people paying in anymore. because we didn't have as many children, whatever it may be. these programs were designed when there were 16 workers for every
retiree. we are down to 3 to 1. soon, it will be 2." rubio isn't the only presidential candidate in eastern iowa. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is headed to the city of "clinton". she's holding a town hall there called "fighting for us". watch kcrg-tv-9 this evening at 5-30 and 10 for coverage of that event. people living in swisher have mixed feelings, after the city's mayor said he will accept syrian refugees. that goes against an branstad to not accept them last week. this comes as dozens of u-s governors, including iowa governor branstad, said they're working to stop refugees from resettling in their states. swisher mayor christopher taylor issued a proclamation on wednesday, saying his city will welcome all people, regardless of origin or refugee status. one city council member said the community response to the
proclamation has been mostly positive. just last week the u-s house passed a bill to step up screenings for syrian and iraqi refugees coming to the u-s. 47 democrats joined 242 republicans in a majority vote of 289 to 137. as the bill moves to the senate, a majority vote could override president obama's promised veto. president obama's administration is trying to urge governors that syrian refugees go through a rigorous security vetting process. secretary of state john kerry and homeland secretary jeh johnson have sent letters to governors of each state. those letters outline the vetting process. president obama is overseas, but he's been keeping an eye on the issue. " we will not give into fear or start turning on each other or start treating people differently because of religion or race or background. that wouldn't just be a betrayal of our values, it would
the obama administration says the vetting process is thorough and can take up to three years. the largest water utility in central iowa is once again working to lower nitrate levels in drinking water. yesterday, des moines water works restarted its nitrate removal facility, for the 149th time in 2015. the utility draws water from the both the des moines and raccoon rivers, both of which had nitrate levels above the e- p-a limits this year. des moines water works is suing buena vista, calhoun and sac counties, claiming farm drainage in those counties caused the spike in nitrate levels. as of july, the utility had already spent more than $1.5 million dollars on lowering nitrate levels for the year. iowa drivers should have a little more money in their pockets for holiday spending this year. that's because prices are under 2 dollars a gallon in many locations across the
state. the des moines register reports the price of gas in iowa is down about 70 cents a gallon from this time last year. tv-9 also saw gas prices under two dollars on the west side of cedar rapids. thanksgiving is this thursday, but this didn't stop many people showing up for a big feast at the central church of christ for lunch. yesterday, the cedar rapids church welcomed in more than 60 people for a free meal. church members delivered boxes of food to homes of people who couldn't make it to the event. they told us they were surprised with the high turnout despite the snow. "what if somebody's homeless, what if somebody's cold? at least they have an opportunity for this one day to come and have a warm place and a hot meal...and so it's worth digging the snow out." this is the church's 24th year hosting the event. we're taking nominations for our nine who care

pulled out of the race for president last week. in his home state, two candidates fought to win his vacated seat. representative john bel edwards - a democrat - won the race for governor. he won a hard-fought battle against republican senator david vitter. . " i'm going to be the governor of all the people." and i'm speaking to everybody in louisiana right now...whether you voted for me, or whether you didn't...or whether you didn't vote. i'm going to be your governor." " edwards' win marks the first statewide victory for democrats since 2008. minnesota's governor is asking the family of a black man killed by police to meet with federal government lawyers. u-s department attorneys are expected to fly to minneapolis to
investigate why officers shot 24-year-old jamar clark. video here shows mass protests outside the city's police station. clark's death is gaining attention because two officers shot him while handcuffed. federal and state authorities are refusing to release video of the shooting, because they say it doesn't show everything that happened, and would compromise their investigation. people in downtown chicago had a scare, after the john hancock center suddenly caught fire! it happened yesterday afternoon. flames erupted out of a window on the 50th floor. the hancock center is one of the city's tallest holds offices, shops and residential units. the fire apartments. five people hurt at the scene. ankles... " one person inside the apartment at the time made it out safely.
general motors will continue to make vehicles, after reaching an agreement with its largest union. the new contract with united auto workers gives employees their first raise in a decade. a little more than half of the 52-thousand u- a-w members voted in favor of a new 4-year deal earlier this month. 60% approal was needed to get the deal done. u-a-w leaders met with holdouts until enough were convinced to go forward with the new contract. the union is still working with ford to reach an agreement on another contract negotiation. stay with tv-9. we'll take a look at your final forecast next.
some residents of swisher are happy that their mayor, christopher taylor, wants to accept syrian refugees. he made a proclamation on wednesday, going against governor terry branstad's orders to halt state office efforts to resettle them. brandstad and other governors nationwide are against president obama's idea to accept and background check refugees. service crews are getting some rest after a busy day saturday plowing snow. tow trucks also spent most of the day getting stranded cars out of highway ditches. most city roads are clear today, but some slick spots remain. and the hawkeyes had a clear field to play on. the hawks beat the purdue
