and with the right temperatures, we could be dealing with accumulating snow. make sure to stay with your first alert storm team for the latest details. thanks britley. new this morning, christmas day ended with gun shots in a waterloo neighborhood. authorities say it happened near midnight in the 100 block of lafayette street. that's just east of waterloo's downtown. this is video of the police response overnight. authorities sas no one was hurt, and that they don't haveveny suspects in custody. we are still trying to get information on any evidence or at the scene. police say an iowa city man broke into a home anfive 20 year-old jerome brooks, junior faces multiple burglary charges. officers say they were

street around 4 a-m thursday. a person living there told officers someone took a t-v, a laptop computer, and other items. officers later found brooks with those items, and belongings repord stolen from area vehicles. authorities are searching for an inmate who failed to return to the linn county correctional center. the center released 45- year-old charles hobert, junior on thursday for a court-ordered furlough. he was supposed to return later in the day, but the center says he never showed up. he is serving time for stalking, forgery, and arassment. a woman is trying to help a riverside family recovering from a fire that destroyed their home. on wednesday, we met amber keith. back on december 15, she said she saw fire trucks eave the station next door to where she works at a casey's general store. soon after, keith learned a single mother and her three young children lost nearly everything in that fire,

workplace received several donations for the family, including clothing, bedding, and some christmas toys. " rachel beerwart is the mother of the three children. she told kcrg tv-9, by phone, that she has not had an easy life. but she says the kindness people have shown in riverside has encouraged her. officials say a bathroom ceiling fan caught fire and damaged a waterloo apartment building. the waterloo- cedar falls courier says firefighters went to the 36-hundred block of ravenwood circle on friday morning. fire crews extinguished flames in the bathroom of one unit. authorities say other nearby apartments had smoke damage. arson is the suspected cause of a fire at president bill clinton's childhood home in hope, arkansas. police say a passing motorist

national historic site friday morning. when firefighters arrived, they say one side of the building was completely overtaken. the town's police chief explained different reasons for why investigators think someone started the fire. " our highest volume started about 10 this morning through 1 o'clock. most of these are device activations today. one of the best days for associates to work. most of the cas are "happy calls", most of the f fks have a new device and are anxious and excited to use it. " the workers also enjoyed a traditional holiday buffet to work throughghll the calls from people trying to set up their new devices. volunteers from a synagogue staffed the receion desk at mercy hospital in iowa city. for christmas day, members of the agudas achim people as part years. it's to allow those who regularly staff the desk to spend time with family during the holidays.

-- on earth. a g gmaker is working on a million dollar set of pistols made from a meteorite. high-end handgun maker cabot guns announced it's makg a pair of pistols from a meteorite. the gun set could sell for as much as one million dollars at auction next year. the company plans to forge the guns, tentatively called the "big bang pistol set," from a 35-kilogram chunk of the gibeon meteorite. the meteorite crashed to earth four-and-a-half billion years ago and was discovered in namibibiin the 1830's. the meteorite will be fashioned into a pair of semiautomatic .45-caliber pistols of the 1911-style meals on the holiday.... eastern iowans help those in need by lending a hand and some warm food on christmas day. good morning from

sometimes christmas doesn't go as planned. that's especially true for onee cedar falls family who lost... almost everything in their home a little more than two months ago. there won't be any gifts under their tree this year. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders tells us why the family's ok with that. this christmas, chris martin's family won't be giving gifts to one another. it's not out of protest or anything. their christmas was changed by this. nat siren early morning, october 12th some oily rags spontaneously ignited in martin's garage. the fire got large. his oldest daughter saw the flames and woke up the family. "we looked out the back and there was a huge, enormous fire three stories tall. it was our entire garage with our cars inside. it was just up in flames."the family, including their two cats, got out safe. but the flames spread to the house. crews were able to put it out, but not before the fire did a considerable amount of damage. two cars lost. bedrooms destroyed. the only clothes they had were what was left in the basement laundry. it got worse. even

flame were much lost everything in the fire. if it wasn't burnt, it was smoke damage." for,the first time, martin and his family were without a home. the four had to make do living on top one another in they've since rented a home and started renovating the property they lost. plus, slowly buying back what was destroyed with insurance dollars and a lot of help from the community. "every time i think about it, i start tearing up. we ve so many friends and so many people helped us, who we didn't even know. people dropped off clotheheon our porch, that we didn't know. they didn't leave a note."chris's wife, bettina fabos, admits there were some tough moments. but, iyou think christmas after losing so much sounds sad, bettina says think again. to her, it's eye opening. "the thing that we've learned about this whole fire is that, things don't matter at all. it's like people matter. your loved ones matter." in that spirit,he annual gift exchange will take a break this year. santa can keep his deliverers. this family has other plans. "you know, i think just like a

watching a movie together, being around each otheis plenty enough for christmas this year." proof that people, not purchases, often make the best presents. in cedar falls, forrest saunders, kcrg-tv9 news. chris martin says he d his family are expecting to move back in june once the renovationsnso the home are complete. several dozen seniors in the iowa city area enjoyed a warm, holiday meal on christmas. elder services and the optimist club of coralville served meals to people at the iowa city- johnson unty senior center. many of those who attended live in the ecumenical towers senior housing complex. the menu included many tradititial holiday foods like ham, sweet potato casserole, spinach salad and fruit pie. "00:09:55 especially on holidays, we try to make it a home meal. even though you're not around your family, you feel

potatoes, your ham, your corn. it may not be recipes like e home. but we throw it in there to get you good comfort food home meals." volunteers also delivered meals to people who weren't able to make it to the senior meal. two churches in cedar rapids also teamed up to provide meals to people on the holiday. saint mark's united methodist church and saint paul's united methodist church served around 300 people - and delivered more than 150 meals to people living nearby. the churches hosw that event each year, so people don't have to spend christmas alone. candidate chris christie, is headed to iowa for three-y campaign trip. the new jersey governor is making stops in dubuque, davenport, muscatine, iowa city, and cedar rapids. right now, christie is polling low behind the top g-o-p contenders. the latest c-n-n / o-r-c poll shows trump topping the field with 39 percent nationwide. ted cruz is in a clear but distant 2nd, with 18 percent. in 3rd and 4th, ben carsoso and marco rubio, are tied at 10 percent. on the democratic side, hillary clinton maintained a strong lead over bernie sanders, 50 percent to 34 percent.t. the u-n-i panthers basketball team is hoping to recover after a tough championship loss. the panthers took on b-y-u in the fifth-place game of the diamond head classic in hawaii. u-n-i lost in the final moments

76. u-n-i's first home game is at the mcleod center next wednesday. fans are excited to see the iowa hawkeyes play in their first rose bowl since 25 years ago. the football team left for pasadena, california on thursday afternoon from the eastern iowa airport. the 12-and-1 hawkeyes will face the 11-and- 2 stanford cardinal in the rose bowl on new years day. kickoff is scheduled for just aftete4 p-m, iowa time. you can watch the game on e-s-p-n. it's an unusual sight for people in sin city... snow! we'll tell you how rare it is, coming up.

tony goodwin's life, when a tornado hit perry county, tennessee. "i had my grandson in my arm, under my arm. and uh, everybody got in except for my sister-in-law, and i'm yelling at her, 'come on!' you know. she got in and and as soon as she did i shut the door.'" the tornado knocked his house off it's foundation. but he and six others survived by taking cover in the storm shelter. "you never know until you are on the scene like this to seek shelter immediately however you can. because it's a life saver" two of those killed in tennessee were husband and wife -- ann and antonio yzaguirre. according to the storm prediction center... at least 14 tornadoes hit mississippi on wednesday. but a single twister did most of the damage. "this is a miracle. there is no way that um three individuals were in this house at this time and they were able to walk away." communities coming together. thankful to be alive.
