who robbed a wendy's officers say they were called to the wendys on commerce drive at about 11:30 last night. . lice say the suspect was armed. no one was hurt, and the investigation is ongoing. the mother of a homeless man who suffered severe burns earlier this month has a wish for her son, beyondndis recovery. she's hoping to get one of her son's most valuable possessions back. 38-year-old corey smock was living in@a tent in cedar rapids on the northwe side. two weeks ago, a candle tipped ver and his sleeping bag caught on fire. a passerby saw the fire and pulled smock out, but he had severe burns. smock had his dog's ashes with him when his tent caught fire. when his mother -- barb heathman-- tried to get the ashes, she said the police denied her because smock has to give consent. but he is in a medically

burned. heathman says she believes in her heart she is the only one smock would want to keep t ashes. "as his mom, i know what that domeant to him, that was the only thing in thth world corey ad that meant anything to him." heathman is asking for the police to make some kind of exception. a dubuque man faces a murder charge in chicago after a dispute over a dice game. the chicago sun-times reports police arrested 23-year-old emmanuel harvey for a death on the city's south side last may. police say harvey and another person shot and killed 29-year-old alvin randolph. they say the 2 went to confront another person for cheating in a dice game. randolph tried to break up he dispute. that's when n lice say harvey and the other person shot and killed him. the chicago sun times reports harvey is a graduate of city high in iowa city. ne person is dead and another is injured after a car crash in fairfax. 49 year old terri skalsky of walford died in the crash yesterday. her vehicle crossed the

head-on. then a truck smashed into the passenger side of skalsky's vehicle. 22 year old hannah injured. she was in the second vehicle. one person n dead and another injured this accident. benton county sheriff randy forsyth says a 56 year old keystone man was vacuuming grain into a semi at the benton grain company. thaas in keystone. the s sriff says a wall of corn surrounding him collapsed, and covered him. they have not released his name. the state of iowa is producing more ethanol t tn ever before. the iowa renewable fuels association says the state produced more than 4 billion gallons of ethanol this year -- a new record. thth's about 27% of all l e nation's'sthanol. the association says the state's 43 ethanol refineries surpassed last year's production by increasing efficiency. people in dubuque now have an easier time tracking road conditions in another way.

plow last cleared snow from every city street. all 23 of dubuque's snow plow trucks have tracker. infnfmation about where e ose trucks have been during a storm, shows up, live, on the city's website. snow plow lade, not the truck k self. so activivy only shows up on the map, when the blade touches the ground. plow drivers use that information after a storm attention. "some of my drivers will check the publbl site before they come into work and just see where they're at on their route. " dubuque made the gps tracking system live to the public back in 2013. in recent years, they've had some technical issues getting that information on their website. but they recently switched to a cellular system to help,better share that data online. the city spends about two thousand dollars each year for the tracking system. iowa's department of transportation is getting some feedback on a snow plow

it added new blue and white lights to some d-o-t snow plows this winter. the goal is to make the plows easier to see for drivers, and cut down the number of craes. " our early indications are the public's come back with some prprty positive comments of lights being able to distinguish our trucks better " every snow plow in district 1, located in central iowa, has the new lights. at least 2 trucks in the other d-o-t districts also have them. right now, the iowa d-o-t is still looking for about 200 part time employees this wintnt. most of those positions are for snow plow operators. drivers are required to have a c-d-l license, but the d-o-t does provide training. the d-o-t's website has a page for people to apply. if you visit the grocery store during the holidays, ringing bells is common place. but even after christmas, you will still see the salvation army's red kettles. the organization's fundraising camign still

kcrg-tv9's forrest t unders is live this morning at the johnson county salvation army in iowa city. forrest, the salvation army is short of their al but they are determined to get it. that's right chris and nicole. they still have another month, but t ty need to make 55 thousand more dollars. joining me now is patricia smith with the salvation army. what is your goal for this campaign? how do you plan to reach it? so far, the red kettle campaign has raised 270 thousand dollars. that means they still have 55 thousand dollars left to go. organizers say this nraising campaign i i especially important because the money raised for this event accounts for 60 percent of the year's budget. to help boost donations the salvation army is starting the big ten kettle club this week. the university of iowa community credit union

cheering storming the court hawkeye fans are celebrating this morning aftethe men's basketball team upset the number one ranked and undefeated michigan state spartans last night. iowa controlled the game from start to finish. the final score was 83 to 70. this is the first time since 1999 that the hawks have knocked off a number one ranked opponent. it's the first time the team has ever done it at home. for college basketball in iowa this year... the uni men's basketball team knocked off then #1 north carolina 71-67 back in november. the panthers also took down the then - #2 ranked iowa state cyclones 81 to 79 at

gattring of birds becaususof the deadly highly pathogenic avian influenza.. it was put in place to help halt the@spread of the disease and protect domomtic birds. the iowa departmenenof agriculture announced yesterday that the order will be lifted starting the first of january. and getting to the place where they can lift the ban on bird exhibitions is a milestone it means iowa has gone six months without a new case of bird flu. "that means that we don't have avian influenza as far as we know in the state of iowa. it does not necessarily mean that we won't ever have it again. so we're asking everybody to stay very attentive. certainly to look and question any sick birds we have. but it's great to be able to get back to normal and potentially have exhibitions again." northey says there were a lot of people this past year who started projects on bird exhibitions that weren't able to show their birds. he's hopeful theyeyan get back to that in 2016.. and he

ever. ---- agriculture imports may not be so good for china in the new year. cobank's knowledge exchange division says inin a new report.. china has a multiyear high supply of commodities. the report blames china's subsidization of its agricultural sector, which has yielded a huge stockpile and strained storage capacity. the report cites u-s-d-a figures.. anticipating china to import 46 percent less corn.. 34 percent less cotton.. and 35 percent less milk powder in 2016. wheat, soybeans, and other food grains are expected to go up still.. but by smaller margins. ---- south american weather is still fluencing the markets.. this time to the upside. " somebody knew how to dress out an animal...ljke a hunter or somdbody who maybe worked in a butcher shop...the way it was gutted and everything somebody had to know what they were doing." the sheriff's office estimatete the loss of the cow at about two thousand dollars. when the weather outside is frightful, the

nighgh partly cloudy low: : 9 winds: w 5-15 alo: 5 dbq: 8 iow: 9 thanks kaj. family and friends are remembering a 21-year-old university of iowa student who died earlier this week. nicole underwood was killed during a bus crash in chicago on monday. police say the bus driver lost control on interstate 55 early monday morning. the bus hit a construction sign. police say the driver told them he swerved to avoid a pickup that moved into the bus's lane. four others had non life- threatening injuries. underwood was studying social work and on track to graduate in may. she planned to continunuher education and attend graduate school. friends say she was traveling to chicago to

friends and her boyfriend. they described her as caring and charismatic. 07:07:54 "i can't tell you how many times i would be upset ananshe would show up at my door with care packages, like fuzzy socks, and all of my favorite t tngs. i've never had a friend like that." underwood's loved ones in des moines are hoping to raise enough money to create a 10 thousand dollar scholalahip for human services students in her honor. waterloo police are investigating a report of someone firing a gun at a group of people. it happeved around 2:30 yesterday afternoon in the 500 block of elm street.t. police say the initial report was that someone fired several times at the group. but they don't know of any injuries. police found a small amount of blood and several shell casings. a waterloo man will spend almost 5 years in federal prison. 23-year-old dameon harris was convicted of being a felon and a drug user in

waterloo police say the charges stem from a aapril ininident where he tried to hide a gun before officers arrived. harris is one of seven people arrested in waterloo as part of the deparent of justice's "project safe neighborhood s." this is video from a news conference announcing those arrests. they stem from six incidents this past spring, one of them deadly. the goal is to try to stop people who cannot have a firearm frfr having one in waterloo. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. family, friends, and military service members will honor an airman killed in afghanistan at his funeral today. air national guard sergeant joseph lemm was 1 of 6 u-s service people who died in a suicide bombing on december 21st. sgsg. lemm was born in dubuque and was a new york city police detective. about 50 family members left on a bus yesterday to head to his funeral. the service will be held at st. patrick's cathedral in

survived by his wife and their 2 children. republican presidential candidate marco rubio says national security would be s top priority if he's elected. the florida senator made several stops in eastern iowa yesterday, including one at the waterloo center fothe arts. he told dozens of supporters that the government's number 1 j is to keep americans up the military to help fight he also told voters that he would undo many of president obama's actions. new jersey governor chris christie is talking to voters in iowa today hoping to win them over for the republican presidential nomination. yesterday he made several stops in eastern iowa. one of those was at iowa city's hamburg inin#2 -- a traditional stop for those campaigning. he was critical of president obama's recent efforts to fig climate change. christie also questioned the governing experience of many of his s opponents, both republicans and democrats. he says too many of them are vying for a position

governor george pataki ended his bid for president lala night. he made the announcement in a video posted on social media. is $325,000. we have raised just under $270,000 leaving just about $55,000 to go. our campaign ends on january y , 2016 so we have just a month left to raise the needed. the funds raised in our holiday campaign account for over 60% of our annual budget. to assist with meeting our goal, and in the hopes of exceeding it, we are launching the big ten golden kettle club this wee the university of iowa a mmunity credit union started our 2015 campaign with a $10,000 gift and we are now looking for 9 other companies or private individuals to join the uicccc and become a aig ten golden kettle club member with a $10,000 gift. we will be recognizing these donors at our volunteer preciation/annual meeting in february with a special presentation and will continue to lift them up throughout 2016. we have teared down this program and will also be recognizing silver shield

organ donation or transplant. people will see a photo of the solon man russ gerdin carried by his daughter. russ's family says they're looking forward to the parade to remember russ who received a liver transplant following a atruggle with liver cancer.
