new year's eve celebrations, iowa national guard soldiers got up well before dawn on a mission of mercy.sot/nat their job... prepare and deliver this convoy of 20 water treatment and transport vehicles to missouri communities where clean water is in short supply. " we don't get to do missions like this very often... it's very exciting for us do our mos and help " the military occupation specialty... or m-o-s... for soldiers in the 334th brigade support battalion includes delivering clean water wherever needed. yesterday, iowa governor terry branstad told the guard to help missouri. the "water dogs" as they call themselves prepared the tankers and a tactical portable treatment system that can produce 15-hundred gallons of drinking water per hour. on new year's morning, there was time for a quick breakfast and some last minute instructions. sot/nat the plan was to split the convoy to avoid congestion on highways during

before the rose bowl, the university of iowa marching band played in the annual tournament of roses parade. the u of i

the parade. the float had four- thousand flowers, mostly roses, as well as parsley, flax, oatmeal and corn. by rule, parade floats can only be decorated with natural items. all the flowers started going on the float wednesday night, so the float looks fresh. hawkeye football coach kirk ferentz also tops the list of the highest paid state employees in fiscal year 2015. it's a list he has topped for several years. this year's college coach of the year took home nearly four-million dollars in salary and benefits - up about three- percent from last year. iowa state's former head basketbal coach fred hoiberg was second on the list at 2-point-1 million. recently fired cyclone football coach, paul rhoads was third at 1- point-85 million. the highest paid non- coach was university of iowa hospitals c-e-o kenneth kates, who earned one- point-six million dollars. police are looking for the suspect an officer shot at during a new year's day shooting in waterloo. police say someone fired a gun

people in an alley near club 319 on east fourth street. a 31 year-old man was wounded in the leg and is expected to survive. as the group ran, an officer fired one shot at an armed suspect but missed. police arrested several armed subjects in the area. 22 year-old kristopher spates junior faces several charges, including intimidation with a dangerous weapon and going armed with intent. a 16 year-old and 15 year- old are also charged with misdemeanor carrying weapons. police charged a davenport man with illegally selling a gun used in a shooting this past october. 40 year-old robert mayes used a pistol to fire shots at a davenport law office where his estranged wife worked and another business in bettendorf. mayes then shot and killed himself - no one else was killed or even hurt. police say 44 year-old lonnie long sold mayes the gun, even though mayes did not have a valid permit.

the new year welcomed its first cedar rapids baby of the year. "nat crying " everett werling was born at 6:46 this morning at unitypoint st. luke's in cedar rapids. he weighed in at eight pounds seven and a half ounces. dad, eric is a university of iowa police officer. he was supposed to be at the rose bowl for work - but skipped it for the birth. he says it's worth missing the hawkeye game. "yesterday was actually our wedding anniversary. we thought what better day to celebrate and have a party. we spent our anniversary together, laboring, then he decided to wait until the next day and have his own special day for his birthday." born in eastern iowa. tenley schares was born at 1:53 this morning at university of iowa hospitals and clinics to bridgette and justin schares of north liberty.

year's resolutions to get outside more today. it's part of a state wide effort called "the first hike, which encourages people to enjoy the outdoors during the winter. a group of about one hundred hikers at the mines of spain took a walk through that state park this afternoon. they got some exercise and a chance to see some wildlife. "because there's no vegetation, you can see the animals a lot easier. the white tail deer, turkey. occasionally you might be a glimpse of red fox out there. wood pecker." this was the fifth year in a row park rangers at the mines of spain led the first hike on new year's day. a homeless shelter for men in dubuque received a donation from a unexpected person today. 9-year-old avery heiar asked santa claus for a number of things for christmas. one of those items was money for the hundred dollar bill showed up under the tree on christmas morning, avery dubuque rescue

"he's been asking a lot lately about donating to the poor. he wants to earn money by shoveling sidewalks or doing something where he can get money to donate to the poor.
