dubuque today -- the town he was born. staff sergeant lemm died last month in a suicide bombing in afghanistan. this was wednesday morning in new york city as the men and women of the police department joined other mourners outside the funeral of joseph lemm at st. patrick's cathedral. staff sergeant lemm grew up in eastern iowa before attending high school in nebraska and then seeing the world. kcrg-tv 9's katie wiedemann was in dubuque today -- as his family came home. on friday afternoon joe lemm's cousin put out a request for people to greet lemm's parents at the airport. 24 hours later, they were surprised with the number friends family and strangers who showed up to honor the fallen solider. as the private plane touched down on the cold dubuque runway, there was a warm welcome inside the airport as lemm's mother, shirley and his father chuck arrived back home. "it's breath taking and it's
come for him for his respect. " complete silence filled the crowded terminal as police officers and military veterans "their son didn't die in vain. there are people there who love who didn't even know him. " lemm was a 15-year veteran of the new york served in the air national guard. six foot six. big broad and very handsome. he was an unbelievable person and he gave his all for his country. " but he was a also a husband father, and a son. a genuine good guy who leaves behind a big family here in iowa. "i can hear him say, 'what's the big deal?' i am just me." " but he was a big deal. and now, for this family and everyone here, it's a big loss. shirley lemm says joe's wife and children in new york are trying to adjust to life without him. she says they are all humbled and honored by the support both in new york and here in iowa. in dubuque katie wiedemann kcrg tv-9 news
make sure that service members returning deployment are taken care of. the black hawk county veterans affairs commission starts a campaign next month to reach out to veterans on college campuses. the waterloo- cedar falls courier reports the group is starting 'lunch and learns' for student veterans at uni, hawkeye community college, upper iowa and kaplan university. the commission wants to let them know about numerous services available in the area. tonight president obama, declared a state of emergency in missouri while the region deals with historic and deadly flooding. while some of the flooding moves south along the mississippi river, parts outside of st. louis are starting to dry out. this is from eureka, a
city. people were able to return to homes and remove items destroyed in the flood. dumpsters were overflowing as families in this neighborhood started the recovery process. governor jay nixon says the severity of this flooding is hard to believe. " i mean, when you're seeing 55 close, seeing a house that's floated, a full house that's floated into the highway 30 bridge and blowing up, it's almost as if you're living on some other planet. home are scattered for about 200 yards. an oklahoma natural gas crew was reportedly working on the home when a fire started near the gas meter. investigators say one man inside the home survived and was only treated for minor burns. tonight, 7 firefighters are recovering after a dangerous fire near pittsburgh. flames and smoke erupted out of upstairs windows of this home yesterday. one firefighter suffered a broken back. the others went to the hospital for treatment of burns. the injured firefighters woman from the 2nd floor of the building when they had to jump out the window. the rescued woman is in the hospital in stable condition. a dubuque man touched by cancer is getting by friends. a benefit in his honor is helping his family survive while he battles a rare disease. don't let this weekend be a total loss, iowa fans. did you at
welcome boost from those closest to him today... rob sheehan is only 31 -- and should be in the prime of his life -- but he is dealing with an "extremely rare form of cancer"... in his heart. doctors in houston are treating sheehan for cardic angio sarcoma. that means he's been missing plenty of work and traveling back and forth between dubuque and texas. rob's friends and family held a benefit and auction to help raise money for the sheehan family. the family is also dealing with out of pocket expenses and the inability to pay monthly bills as they fight

family also set up a go-fund-me page to help with medical costs. as of about 8:00 tonight, $10,000. cohen is currently in remission, but has 2 rounds of chemo to go. the legacy of a 21 year old college student killed in a bus crash will live on at the university of iowa. loved ones of nicole underwood set up a scholarship fund in her name.
to graduate in may. she planned to continue her education and
