former president bill clinton is reaching out to younger caucus-goers with stops at colleges in eastern iowa. yesterday he stumped for his wife at wartburg college in waverly and cornell mount vernon. he told the crowds that hillary is the bt candidate, not only because t because she has the experirice and emperament. "1:35 there's one person running for president in either party. street in 2007 before that clean up those housing policies and the tt securities you're s sling, you're going to crater the economy. only one hillary " as candidates vye for support, we looked at how often iowa's first in the nation caucuses actually chose the eventual presidential nominee. since 1976, only three republican candidates who won the iowa caucuses have become the nominee. that's not counting incumbents. and in that same time frame, democrats

the nominee. the last time around, democrats selected incumbent barack obama in an uncontested race. and republican voters chose rick states. but mitt romney was the eventual nominee. kcrg t-v nine's mark carlson explains why experts say it's not about winning the caucuses, but how you finish. back in 2008 mike huckabee won the g-o-p iowa caucus. now, 8 years later -- crowds at his events have shrunk, to at times only a couple dozen people. "it's old fashion, grassroots, hahad to hand combat, a a i think that's what ultimately wins causes in iowa. " "each race is different, and somebody who had a chance 8 years ago or 4 years ago, if they weren't successful, well now it's a different race, it's a different dynamic. " while huckabee's story may lead people to think that iowans aren't very good at picking p psidents... bb iowans get even better when it comes to
5:05 am
that's what u-i political science professor tim hagle says the caucuses are all about. "the purpose isn't to pick the nominee or the winner if it were we would get even more grief from the other states who would say oh well gee after iowa it's over, well it's not over, our job here in the iowa caucuses is to winnow the field. " and that's exactly what hagle says iowans do st. the last six presidents all nished in the top ththe in ioioa. "oururob is to separate the contenders from the pretenders, people that really aren't or aren't serious or at least not competing." putting uncommitted voters aside -- only one time has the g-o-p or democratic nominee not finished in the top three in their parties iowa caucus. so the saying, there's three tickets out of iowa -- is very accurate. "we take this very seriously, we are very educated about the candidates their positions and so we're kind of serving as a committee and say to the rest of the country, okay, here is who we recommend. " johnson countyyemocrats chair martha

proud of their record. now there's only one thing left to do... make more historor and it all starts r rht here in iowa. "i want to see everybody turn out to their causes all across the state isn't an extremely important process." hagle says that old saying may be challenged this year because there are only three democratic candidates, while the gop has a huge field. stay with us monday for complete caucus coverere. we'll have live reporor from des moines andnd across eastern iowa along with expert analysis. it starts at eight on kcrg nine point two. then, we'll have full coverage starting at nine o'clock right here on t-v nine. the dubuque humane society says s recent changes have saved a record number of animals. it comes less than a year after facing criticism for its euthanasia rates. in 2014, the shelter euthanized more than 1,200 cats and dogs. then, last spring, the humane society methodology to decide what makes an animal adoptable. in 2015, staff put down only 288

leaving des moines would be a show of disapproval.. however, because of a confusion ofofhether the city or water works board is in control of the lawsuit.. there was an amendment that asked the pork board to investigate changing the venue. a committee would be set up to look at moving.. but.. there's a catch.. some worry that there's no other place in iowa that has the facilities and size of the convention center in hy- vee hall where the congress has been set up for years. "well i don't know that people want to move, i think the impetus behind it was the fact that people were upset, farmers were upset, pork producers, cattlemen, corn producers, soybean producers all are upset by the fact that the des moines water works is suing farmers over over this water quality issue. we don't think that's the way to make progress." ---- agriculture won't be getting any benefits from recent cuba trade announcements. the obama administration announced a loosening of regulations designed to

"well, i mean, the corn market, we're up in our own roach ag cell signal here day 7 and we're finally seeing some weakness here." "and i'd say that when we have these kind of rallies. let's just basically say we've had a 20 cent rally. not much of one but a 20 cent rally, hard to hold much more than 5 or 6 days without some sort of a

sort of new demand news, which i think really, that's what the corn and certainly soybean and wheat markets need. is they need demand stimulus and we're not getting a whole lot of demand stimulus right now." "i really like the hog market and have been thinking that hogs certainly on the feb contract wouldldake a pretty run here and it has but if you look at the chart we've got a 200 day moving average, that we're running into some serious problems with here today with 65-72. i think it's really in the deferred over in the hog market that producers have more downside. i like these hog markets where they are, i think they're making a pretty good rally. but i'm not surprised we're seeing some corrections here off of those long term moving averages." ---- and that's all i have for the show@today.. thanks for joining us..'ll see you next time.. ---- we'll post a video every day in the agribusiness section of kcrg.com. you'll find it under the nee tab. i'm david geiger with the agribusiness report trt 3.23 oc webtease

it's thursday time for another edition of the kcrg tv-9 athlete of the week sponsored by cedar rapids toyota. cedar rapids washington swimmer cameron kelley has a combination of speed and endurance.. kelley broke the mvc record last saturday winning the 500 free e th a time of 4:4:.19. he also anchored the winning 4 by 200 relay. you got third at state last year you probably hoping to win it all this year? and i would like to tear that 4:30 off the board you would like to break the state record i would like to bring it a lot farther down. you think that is possible? oh defenitely i was two seconds of my best time their i will be a lotot close at districts and i should be able to get under it at state. he works extremely hard at his craft he almost never takes a day off he is a year round swimmer and his dedication to the sport are paying big dividends for this right now. okay
