to find a quiet area on campus. rg-tv 9's brea love is live in the newsroom this morning. brea, what has been the response from students about these new prayer rooms. chris and nicole, the members of the university of iowa's muslim student association are saying it's a relief to know there's a safe area for them to go. with so many students enrolled at iowa, it can be hard for muslim students to find a quiet area. students in the m-s-a group reached out to the university asking for the space. after a month of planning they found and renovated two rooms for prayer. one for women and one for men. students say this is not only a step forward for thehe but one for the university as well. "if there are other religious groups that need that space to pray at i think that the them then they'll be fine with them and i think that's a good thing for everyone on campus" are willing to accommodate any group with their all they need to do is ask. the msa is holding an inaugural ceremony tonight at the iowa theater inside the imu at 5 p p live in the newsroom, brea love,

in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a former correctional officer at the anamosa state penitentiary will l end more than four years in prison. a judge has sentenced 29- year-old garrett barton to 57 months in prison. that's after he pleaded guilty while in popoession of weapons... the prison. barton admitted to accepting cash from an inmate to smuggle two cell phones into the prison in 20-14. ree other former correctional officers have also pleaded guilty to various charges in connection with the investigation. in december, a judge sentenced one of them to 17 months in prison. law enforcement leadads in johnson county want to cut down on the number of people in jail. they are hoping to make changes and facility provements to better handle people who are homels or those dealing with mental health issues. last week sheheff's deputies, police officers, and other county officials traveled to san antonio, texas. police there take people

abuse issues to a behavioral health centnt instead of a hospital or a jail. johnson county authorities say they want to better train officers toandle mental health issues. there's also a possibility of adding a behavior health center in the future. "we're looking at those ththgs, bririing the partners to the table, we're going to have a meeting later on in february where everybody who has been down to san antonio is going to come togetheand say, what did you see? what stood out to you? what seems like a pressing need here? what seems like e great idea we couldd modod here? what might that look like and then what are some of those initial action steps? " county leaders say they've been working hard to combat mental illness or e past couple of years, but there'e'more work to do. a man who was serving 50 years in the coralville prison has died. he was there for the murder of a mashalltown woman. the iowa department of corrections says 42-year- old matthew irving died of natural causes. officials say he collapsed in hospice care. irving had been diagnosed with cancer that spread to his lungs and bones. he was convicted in 2014 for the ath of 55- year-old rebecca hall.

franklin county sheriff's deputy has gone up in flames. chief deputy linn larson had the papers, includudg collected signatures, in his pickuku truck. but it caught fire monday afternoon at his home west of coulter and everything was destroyed. larson will run for sheriff in franklin counun and planned to turn in the paperwork during the caucus. now he has to collect signatures again. the iowa lottery is in hot water for rigging the hot lotto game. a des moines law firm fid a lawsuit yesterday for larry dawson. he won a 9 million dollar hot lotto jackpot 5 years ago. the lawsuit claims he should have won 3 times that amount because the previous jackpot was fixed. it's related totothe case against eddie tipton. he's a former lottery security worker who secretly installed software on machines to learn winning numbers in advance. investigators sayaye'd then get people to collect the money in other states on his behalf. the iowa division of criminal investigation says tipton may have had access to jackpots in as

attorney said astronomical, your prize. "the question that our lawsuit poses that we think should be very easy to answer is, if you can't trust the lottery to pay you in full when you win, why would you ever play?" tipton was sentenced in september to 10 years in prison for two counts of lottery fraud in iowa. shocked that they have to start all over after voters rejected a bond vote this week. the district says it wants to hear from voters who said "no" to the $47 million dollar measure. administrators say they spent years crafting ose plans. a new career center, as well as renovations to east and west high schools. to save money with more classes. n nt school year, high school students can take as many as 7 classes it'll save money by requiring current teachers to teacacone more class a dayay the district saysyshe change will save 1 million dollars because it won't have to hire more teachers. the district is anticipating a budget cut of 1 point 5 to 2 year. that's if lawmakererpass igovernor terry branstad's proposed 2 point 4-5 percent increase in education funding for the state. to accommodate an extra class each d, high schools would start a half houou earlier. they would then cut 3 minutes from each class period. washington high school currently has 65 classroom teacacrs. they could cut 5 5 positions because of the proposed state supplemental aid numbers. but these cuts would give students more options to add a class. committee that will help to reward and incentivize state elected officials and candidates that will solve that problem once and for all." gorton says forming a pac in support of an institution is prprty rare. the community group will now work out the process of deciding which candidates to support for future elections. the two democratic presidential candidates are going head to head in a debate tonight in new hampshire. the exchanges at a town hall last night between bernie sanders and hillary clinton show the attacks getting sharper. rerent polls shows sandede has a large lead over clinton in the granite state with the primary on february 9th. the debate tonight is on m-s-n-b-c at 8 pm iowa time. on the republican side, ted cruz is defending himself strongly after donald trump accused him of cheating. yesterday, trump tweeted out that cruz didn't win iowa, he stole it. trump later told a radio station that he plans to file a coplaint over the iowa to accusations that cruz's supporters told people that ben carson was leaving the race. " it seems his reaction to everything is to throw a fit, to engage in insults and i understand that donald finds it hard to lose, " republicans have dropped arkansas mike huckabee dropped out monday. kentucky senator rand paul and former pennsylvania senenor rick santorum suspended their campaigns yesterday.

the republican candidates are preparing to meet on turday in new hampshire. abc is hosting a debate and will release the final lineup later today. this will be the first debate of the season that will not have an underca debate. candidates can qualify for the stage by finishing in the top three in iowa, placici in the top six in an average of new hampshire or national polls recognized by abc. that leaves carly fiorina as the only candidate without a spot. abc's david muir and martha raddatz will moderate that debate on saturday. you can watch it right here on saturday at seven on tv-9. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. the chauncey tower controversy is almost over. iowa city has approved a tentative agreement with a local church over the project. the city council approved the settlement with the trinity episcopal church on tuesday. now the church will consider the proposed agreement on saturday. the settlement stems from a lawsuit the church filed last year which claimed the city

tower. a judge dismissed that lawsuit, but the church appealed. developer marc moen plans to build the 15-story tower on the corner of college and gilbert streets. it would would house apartments, offices, a movie theatre, and me. iowa workforce development has paid out thousands of dollars in employment benefits to people claiming to work for companies that didn't exist. a state audit shows it paid more than 97 thousan dollars to people who said they worked for fake companies in 2013 and 2014. these improper payments are part of more than 909 thousand dollars the state lost over a three-year period. the auditor says her office was notified and started invesesgating in may of 2013. the auditor's office found 20 fake company accounts, but does not know who set them up. the university of iowa's muslim students now have a safe place to pray on campus. ui's muslim student association or m-s-a is holding an inauguration ceremony today to open their new prayer rooms. kcrg-t-t9's brea love joins us on the desk this

so brea, how do students feel about the new area? chris and nicole, the members of msa say it's a relief. with the closest#mosque miles away and students packing everywhere on campus, muslims didn't have a quiet area where they could pray without interruption. now that space is available, students are saying it's a step forward. more than 30 thousand students attend the university of iowa. so you can imagine campus is constantly packed with people. to pray, hard for students like mohammad ismail. 46:07 7 henever i was looking for a room, i kinda would go through the imu and try to find something that's available, which is not the case like at 2 or 2pm, or i'd have to go on top of a staircase and just pray there and hope that no one would walk by and start asking me questions, because we can't talk when we pray." many other msa members felt the same way. that's when the group decided to reach out. after a month of discussion and planning with university officials, they found a sosotion. 59:34 "we identified a couple of rooms that have been used as offices since the flood that happened many years ago. they are no

iowa theater inside of the iowa memorial union at 5 pm. chris and nicole, this means a lot for those students. right. yeah thanks a lot brea. a team of researcrcrs at the university of iowa is making some progress in the fight against cancer. they are using 3-d imaging technology and a collection of cancer-fighting drugs to stop tumors from growinin dr. david soll started writing software for the imaging system back in the 1980's. about 20 years ago, he started collecting antibodies that fight cancer cells. soll decided to merge theses2 projects, with the goal of finding antibodies that would stop tumor growth. his team can watch a tumor's groh in 3-d -- that shows how special cells in the tumor reach out and grab other cells, causing it t tget bigger. soll says the next step is to test which antibodies can prevent certain steps in tumor growth. "43:57-:09 "we now can actually rebuild the tumor, over a 2- month period as it actually builds and forms in this s l, andnd reconstruct everything about it, and i even

as concern for the zika virus grows, the university of iowa is now one of dozens of research institutes watching the virus. the virus is believed to cause small head syndrome, in newborn babies. a brazilian research institute is trying to create a zika vaccine. this is video from inside the emergency operations center at the centers for disease control, which is coordinating the u-s response to the disease. the state hygienic lab in coralville is not currently testing for zika. but, they're sending two blood specimens from iowans to the cdc for testing. that's not to say zika is in iowa, but they are looking into it. lab officials expect to help testing for it soon because the c-d-c will likely need help. "we're not just the only people in the country that are concerned, there are people all over the country, and there's only one place, the cdc, that tests it right now, so there might be a backlog, i have no idea how many specimens are being submitted to them right now. "

a possible vaccine for zika. dubuque is receiving national attention for its snow removal efforts. the salt institute has recognized the dubuque public works department, along with 90 other transportation facilities in the u-s and canada. the non-profit group says dubuque's department is environmental ly conscious in how it uses and stores its winter salt supply. dubuque say's its very honored by the recognition. "i believe we run a top notch snow and ice control program. the community needs to be both aware of that and proud of that also.
