"the senator told a question, the questioner would spend taxes to 500 hundred thousand dollars in health care. every progressive economist who has analyzed that says the numbers dont add up. " "yes the family right in the middle of the economy would pay 500 dollars more in taxes and get a reduction in their health care costs of 5 thousand dollars. in my view health care is a right for all people not a priveldge and will fight for that. " those candidates are now focusing on the upcoming nevada caucus. the republican candidates have a debate tomorrow night at 8 on cbs. a cedar rapids state senator is meeting with voters in eastern iowa today as he campaigns for a u-s senate seat. democrat rob hogg is meeting with voters in mount vernon and anamosa. he will hold a meet and greet at 9 a-m at the fuel

then hogg will meet with people at daly creek winery and bistro in anamosa at 11:30 this morning. an iowa house representativ e from johnson county has decided she's not seeking another term. voters elected sally stutsman in 2012 following 18 years as a johnson county supervisor. she represented district 77. she said after 21 years of public service, she wants to spend more time with her husband. north liberty's mayor amy nielsen has already announced plans to run for stutsman's seat. she has been mayor for 2 years. owners of a zoo near manchester now have to transfer their tigers and lemurs to a facility that can take better care of them. a federal magistrate said the cricket hollow zoo's owners, pam and tom sellner, don't provide the right sanitary living conditions and medical care for the animals. the sellners opened their zoo near manchester in 1986. they have been fighting to keep it open for years. but the animal legal defense fund filed a lawsuit saying the zoo violated the

pam sellner told tv-9 the family needs to talk to their attorney before making any comments. they have 90 days to find where they are sending the lemurs and tigers. that new home must be a u-s agriculture department approved facility. the sellners also can't get any new animals on the endangered species until they can prove they provide adequate care. one iowan a part of the lawsuit against the sellners says this is a victory for the animals. "obviously i was very excited. i think it's great the judge saw through the evidence at trial and found it accurate and compelling enough to rule in our favor. " braumann says he agreed to be part of the suit after visiting the rural manchester zoo and finding what he called appalling conditions. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. a judge has refused to move a murder trial out of dubuque county. 27 year old eddie hicks faces a 1st degree murder charge for the death of his girlfriend,

lemon, last year. his attorneys asked the court to move his trial to another county, claiming the amount of media coverage ould jeopardize getting an impartial jury. a judge has denied that request. police say hicks eddie stabbed kahdyesha lemon more than 20 times at her home on arlington street last june. a relative told t-v nine lemon and hicks had been dating on and off for almost 10 years. violent criminals could see a major reduction in mandatory time served. it would slash the state's mandatory sentence of 70 percent time- served to 30 percent. for example, a second degree murder conviction carries a 50 year sentence. but a person convicted of that crime only has to serve a mandatory of 35 years. if this proposed bill passes, an offender for that crime could serve 15 years, then try to get parole. representative mary wolf hopes lawmakers will consider re-evaluating what she calls - iowa's rigid sentencing laws. a polk county attorney thinks this bill could endanger the public. have to be in a society protected from the violent criminals " "i tend to doubt that many people would get out much sooner but atleast in those rare cases where perhaps someone was an accomplace and they worked hard in prison, they would have the opportunity to apply and go before the parole board " the iowa board of parole will still control who is considered low-risk to re-enter society. iowa's public safety board says they could see modifying minimum sentences - but only for robberies. valentines day is less than 72 hours away. a lot of couples are finding new ways to meet each other. 1 in 10 americans use dating sites or apps to find love. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us live from the newsroom this morning. brea, there's research that shows online dating is becoming more of a social norm? there is! millions of americans hold an account on the hundreds of sites available to them. i talked with university of iowa professor andrew high who says according to research, success rates are on the rise.

involved dozens of students yesterday. the summit focused on preventing dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assaults, and stalking among middle and high school students. middle school students spent the day listening to high school students explain what's age appropriate when it comes to healthy relationships. the idea is for the younger students to get the message from people who've recently been there and experienced that. according to the national organization called "break the cycle", peer to peer education on sensitive topics helps students better listen and understand those topics. "a lot of stuff we do in high school, they are not ready for yet. so it's kind of heart breaking. hearing the stories that the things they are actually going through, are i was in high school. " one portion of the summit focused on middle school students and sexting. that's after several middle school students were caught sending explicit photos to each other last fall. a cedar rapids family service agency is asking for donations to expand its outpatient mental health clinic. and families who

help. it announced yesterday its "soaring beyond" campaign has raised more than five point three million dollars. that's about a million dollars away from its goal. now, it's asking for help. tanager place will use the money for renovations, which would double the number of children its mental health clinic would be able to help. "each child is different, the kids are not cookie cutters. the more options you have that may connect with a child the better and that's what this space has allowed us to do and allowed practitioners to spread their wings and to develop different skills." the tanager place outpatient mental health clinic opened last june. the cedar rapids arena football team is warming for their season opener today. and a relative of a famous n-f-l player is on this year's

the cedar rapids titans are gegeing ready for their season opener tonight.

in their midst. the titans recently signed dylan favre, nephew of legendary former green bay packers quarterback brett favre. dylan played at the university of tennessee- martin. he said indoor football is a different game from outdoor -- it's a much tighter field - but he's looking forward to the season. " the titans will take on the iowa barnstormers tonight at 7:05 at the u-s cellular center. despite the snow on the ground, outdoor enthusiasts can get a glimpse of summer. starting today the cedar rapids sport shsh is back at the hawkeye down expo center. some of the featured exhibits include boating, camping, vactioning, fishing, and hunting. the expo is open until sunday. admission is 6 dollars for adults and is free for kids 12 and under. anytime farmers hear bird flu, they get a little worried after 30 million birds

davidgeiger. ---- well it looks like the bird flu scare in indiana was just that.. a scare... the indiana animal health authorities plan to release the control area and surveillance zone after last months outbreak of a different strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza.. they hope to have it complete before the end of february... if no new positive tests are identified before then.. the outbreak resulted in more than four hundred thousand turkeys and chickens depopulated.. but there has been no new cases for a month.. quarantines will stay on the infected sites until cleanup

are met. ---- on the last day of the agribusiness associationonf iowa showcase and conference.. water quality was a big issue on the agenda.. governor branstad was at the event.. he says there are 32 different conservation and environmental practices that help iowa water quality.. saying it's not just a one size fits all.. there are different soil types and situations in iowa.. so it needs to be tailored to meet individual needs of the landowner. and t tre's a lot of interere with some of f e initiatives.. and financial support that's been coming out of the state government. "landowners are very interested, but they also need some sort of cost- share or some assistance and we have some great practices it's a scientifically based nutrient reduction strategy. the biggest challenge is to have an adequate source of funding that's going to be reliable for the long term." the governor also mentioned his save initiative.. which would extend a sales tax.. giving 80 percent of the growth to schools and some to water quality..

with, said it had discovered he misrepresente d himself. it said javius claimed to have a doctorate from usc, even though he did not. javius responded to that post this week, saying that he had completed his doctoral coursework, but not his dissertation. the cedar rapids school district paid him $268,000, including travel expenses, before yesterday. " we spoke with javius on yesterday afternoon. he says he never misrepresented himself as having the title of "doctor" to the cedar rapids school district, and regrets his past indiscretions. morning activities at cedar rapids prairie high school are canceled this morning, but there will be classes today. this is following a threat to the school. cedar rapids police say a 16-year-old prairie high school student has been charged with harassment. they don't believe the threat was credible, but

students not to bring backpacks and purses to school, and they'll be searched when they come into the building. university of iowa researchers teamed up with a theater group to create a new w b toolkit to combat bullying. the website - called hear - just went live. it stands for helping educators use art to reduce bullying. the toolkit is filled with writing, acting and artistic activities for teachers to use in the classroom. they are designed for kids from kindergarten up through high school to interactively learn about relationships and communication . "we believe that programs that are more based on activating the limbic systeteor really helping g with positive emotional reactions will be a little bit more effective than the traditional bullying curricula that are classroom based." u-i students helped test the website activities in iowa classrooms. now the researchers wananas many teachers and students as possible to use the anti-bullying toolkit.

bullying issues now could reduce family and dating violence issues later in life. in a tv-9 follow-up this morning.. legislation to stop iowa's medicaid system transitioning to private ownership is moving forward. the democratic- controlled iowa senate approved legislation yesterday. the bill would d d the state's contracts with the 3 private companies scheduled to take over march 1st. but the republican- led house isn't expected to bring the bill to the floor. iowa house republicans have released their budget proposal for the upcoming fiscal year. and it's lower than what senate democrats and governor branstad have proposed. the house plan calls for spending $7.32 billion dollars for fiscal 2017. the senate plan totals $7.3939 billion. and governor branstad's budget proposal was $7.4 billion. republicans want to spend fewer dollars than democrats on both education and health care. the iowa utilities board pushed back its decision on the dakota access pipeline - possibly to march. the board has been discussing the 346 mile pipeline for the

in eastern iowa there are only 3 african americans who serve in l lal government. that can leave people in the black community feeling un-represented. waterloo mayor quentin hart, iowa city councilman kingsley botchway ii, and waterloo city councilman jerome amos jr are those three. they say it's time to get to work. hart and botchway say there are large issusu facing african americans in both of their areas. they are taking the steps to address those problems by reaching out.. yesterday as global economic concerns intensify. and oil prices regained some early losses after news of possible production cuts. oil prices briefly dipped to a new 12 year low yesterday, falling to 26 dollars a barrel. prices eventually rebounded above 27 dollars after reports of possible opec production cuts. the cuts would help ease the global excess of crude oil that has crushed the commodity in recent months and sent gas priris in a downward spiral. ford announced it is launching four new all sport utility vehicles over the next four years. the company is not saying when or where it will add the new vehicles, but says the products are part of its global plan. ford also says it has no plan to eliminate any models currently in production. and a-t and t ip ready to test
