12:30 this morning, iowa time. sustained winds when it made landfall were at about 80 miles per hour. it's expected to drop as much as 10 inches of rain in some areas as it tracks up the east coast throughout today. as it moves in on south carolina, some people near charleston are leaving town. some families packed up and left yesterday to beat the storm. one man says chances he's taken in past storms haven't paid off. he says he's not risking it again. "w' what happens but as far as stay here and ride out the storm, no never again. never again. " green says his home flooded in october last year. he says his backyard turns into a pond almost every time it rains. an iowa couple isn't getting much sun this morning while vacationing south of the florida panhandle. annette and todd gohlmann of ames got to clearwater beach

with hermine arriving just hours after they arrived, the gohlmanns say they didn't waste any time indoors. " the water is usually calm on the gulf and it almost looked like the atlantic side. it was just pounding waves. " the gohlmanns are in florida celebrating todd's 25 years of service as a police officer. they're expecting to have a couple days of sunshine after the storm passes. a giant block party rolls into eastern iowa today to mark the start of the hawkeye football season. it's fry fest, which kicks off us live from the iowa river landing. brea, what's special about this year? chris and nicole, it's a celebration of all that is hawkeye. from the block party, to the trade show, to the huge pep rally it should be a good time for all fans. i'm standing here with.. clarissa kane, brian mcdonald, tom ondrejicka. could you tell us about some of the events happening? what kind of things can we see at the trade show? anything people should know if they're

here as cities, counties and state agencies are increasing their patrols. at the cedar rapids police department, a grant will pay for more officers to hit the str governor's traffic safety bureau, one third of deadly crashes in iowa involve drunk drivers. it's not the $3 a gallon we all saw a few years ago, but higher gas prices are out there in time for the labor day weekend. aaa reports the national average price rose for 14 days in a row, topping out at $2.22 monday. in cedar rapids, drivers saw the price for a gallon of regular unleaded go down 2 cents in the last week to $2.21 but drivers in waterloo - cedar

car driving by the 965 bridge over the iowa river in johnson county will have all lanes closed. repair work on the bridge is set to begin on tuesday. the bridge failed an inspection earlier this year, and now workers will begin preparing the decking. highway 965 is a popular detour for people who want to avoid i-380. johnson county estimates the bridge will stay closed until the end of november. but that work could take mor dry this fall. "weather is key, so we'd like mild, warming temperatures, if we don't have those we'll deal with warming the concrete, but that can delay the project. " a detour takes drivers through shueyville to i-380 and and then back through north liberty. a pair of long-term road closures in dubuque are set to begin early next week. road grading on the southwest

work, portions of seippel and cousins roads will close. drivers in that area are asked to use posted detours. governor terry branstad said he would not be upset if farm land he owned was turned over for eminent domain to build the bakken oil pipeline. the comments come after the iowa state patrol arrested 30 people at a protest in boone. the protesters are upset that the texas company, dakota access, is able to use eminent domain to get property rights in iowa for the pipeline. w the pipeline will ship oil across 18 counties in iowa as it travels from north dakota to illinois. branstad says just because he supports this pipeline doesn't mean he's for big oil companies. he says while renewable fuels are an important part of iowa's economy, oil still has its benefits. " both renewable fuel through ethanol, oil from north dakota that's going to be refined in america that can be helpful in keeping down the cost of energy and keeping us from relying on oil coming from the dangerous middle east and other unfriendly parts of the world.

cnn released what it calls its 'poll of polls'. it found the former secretary of state with 42 percent support compared to republican donald trump's 37 percent. libertarian and former new

percent. green party nominee jill stein has 4. the poll is an average of results from 5 recent national polls. cnn took data from the pew research center, quinnipiac university, monmouth university, usa today and fox news. clinton just had her best fundraising month ever. the democratic nominee raised 143 million dollars last month. more than half of that will go to the democratic national comittee. august's funds gave clinton 68 million dollars in the bank for her campaign. trump has not released his july with about 38 million dollars in cash on hand. in milwaukee wisconsin, august was the deadliest month in more than two decades. the city recorded 24 homicides last month. five of those deaths came during protests over a deadly officer- involved shooting. this is video from those protests, where demonstrations burned down about a half dozen buildings in one neighborhood. police chief ed flynn says the 24 homicedes were the most since serial killer jeffry dahmer's victims were found in 1991.

" chief flynn says homicides per-capital in milwaukee last month were worse than chicago. the top cop in dallas, texas is calling it a career. chief david brown will officially retire on october 22nd. he was in the national that killed five of his police officers. in a news conference yesterday, mayor mike rawlings thanked brown for his more than 30 years of service on the dallas police force. "david brown is a straightforwar d man, he's a man of integrity and of courage. he's a man that believes in the simple proposition, do what is right and treat everyone with respect. "

perspective on the size of this tropical storm, this is what it looks like from space. these images from nasa shows tropical storm hermine approaching and landing in florida this morning. it weakened to a tropical storm as it moves farther inland today. schools in hawaii are reopening this morning after some rough weather from tropical storm watching hurricane lester. the category 3 storm is moving closer to hawaii. the center of lester will pass close to or over the hawaiian islands this weekend. one red cross volunteer from cedar rapids has left for hawaii. he'll help people get ready for the storm. " our community, the way i look at it, community doesn't stop at the city line or county line, so i'm happy to go to another part of the country and help. " forecasters are predicting lester will have maximum sustained winds near 125 miles

a 58 year old cedar rapids man has life threatening injuries this morning from a crash with a deer on his motorcycle. paramedics airlifted him to u-i-h-c. the crash happened at lewis access road and cedar heights trail near center point around 1-30. officials say the driver, michael long, wasn't wearing a helmet. family and neighbors in dubuque say they are still grieving over the loss of nancy krapfl. the 66 year old church secretary was on an early morning walk one year ago when po death. familyand friends held a vigil in jackson park last night. there, they prayed and released balloons with messages written on them. her family members say she was a selfless person. ",'it's just the anniversary of an event that we hoped would never happen but it did 15:05:19 '. " neighbors say their neighborhood isn't the same since her death.

1st degree murder and 1st degree sexual abuse in the case. police say he was breaking into cars at the time, saw krapfl at that early hour, and then severely beat her and raped her. he told officers that he had nothing better to do. right now he is in a facility where he can get a psychiatric evaluation. a former school bus attendant in cedar rapids faces a minimum of 10 years in federal prison for enticing young girls who rode on his bus. tyler konigsmark has pleaded guilty to one count of enticement of cedar rapids. he says he asked three girls who were 12 to 14 years old for sexually explicit pictures. he also admitted having sex with the 12 year old. the court has not set a sentencing date. a new statue of former iowa hawkeye football coach hayden fry is ready for its big reveal today. coralville plans to unveil the statueduring the annual fry fest activities. before, as you can see, the statue was in storage at the coralville marriott. the city used money

behind your back this video shows a police officer in waterloo pulling a man's hair, hitting his head, and using strong language during an arrest in april. police just released this yesterday. they say it came after a dangerous high speed chase in waterloo. now a state prosecutor says the officer who made the arrest won't face any criminal charges. the prosecutor says jurors could potentially understand why officer adam wittmayer was upset. but for 24-year-old montavis keller, that's the man who started the high speed chase. that chase reached 90 miles an hour in and out of waterloo. police say keller almost hit wittmayer as he put down spike strips, which eventually ended the chase. police chief dan trelka says his officer's behavior in the video is not acceptable. "even though the officer was almost struck under any circumstances we don't condone that type of behavior

disciplined the officer" " trelka did not go into the details of that discipline. but he says it was significant a teenager in waterloo is recovering from a gunshot wound he got during a shooting we first reported yesterday. that was one of multiple incidents involving guns that all happened wednesday night --in the space of just one hour. here's a look at where 3 different incidents occurred- the shooting, then a gunfire incident and a robbery. the crime scenes were scattered all throughout waterloo. pol figure out if they're connected. the first shooting happened at a home at 319 newell street about 9 wednesday night. according to the waterloo - cedar falls courier, a bullet hit david wright jr in the leg. he's 18. police expect him to recover. earlier this year, someone shot at wright while he was sitting in a car. those shootings happened in april and july. waterloo police haven't made any arrests or updates in the new star liquor store robbery or gunfire at a house on west mullan avenue. no one was

to work at the polls on november eighth. the auditor's office says it needs about 400 people, plus others who may be able to fill in at the last moment. the county does pay the poll workers, and computer skills are a plus. we asked a few other county auditors about their needs for election workers. black hawk county plans to hire more than 300 poll workers and is also currently recruiting. dubuque county will hire at least 175 people and says it always has a need for more workers. and linn county says reu and it might not need to put out a special call for more workers. in just a little more than two hours, events begin for the unofficial start to the hawkeyes football season. the iowa river landing in coralville is getting painted black and gold for the annual fryfest. kcrg-tv9's brea love has been in coralville all morning and joins us live. brea, after last year's successful season, there's bound to be a lot of excitement leading up to this year...
