be able to walk, but sasha is determined. kcrg-tv nine's brea love joins us. brea, you spent time with sasha? chris and nicole, sasha is your typical teenager. she loves her friends, art, and soccer. she's just starting highschool, but within her 16 years she's been on quite the journey. the duval family adopted sasha three years ago from ukraine. when she arrived in the u.s. knees, elbows, and shoulders were majority affected. sasha's mom sherrie duval says the first thig to her was that she wanted to walk. they then made it their mission to see that happen. after many surgeries, extensive therapy, and practice sasha can now walk 500 feet. duval says it was a long journey, but sasha was up for it all. 36:37 "we asked her before we did this, we said this looks really hard, are you sure you want to do this and this is what we heard from sasha 'i want to walk, i want to play soccer.'" she plans to do that someday. for now she will continue with therapy, and with help from grant wood a-e-a she will

coming up in the next half hour we'll talk with sasha and look deeper into her journey. chris and nicole? the salvation army's emergency shelter for men in waterloo is moving today. the new location is 149 argyle street and will add two beds to house up to 18 men. the salvation army renovated the space after losing federal funding development in the spring. the dubuque city council is thinking about solar power for some of its energy needs. today, the council will consider installing solar panels. they would go on the roofs of the city's six fire stations. the idea is part of a larger initiative to cut the city's greenhouse gas emissions 50-percent below 2003 levels by the year 2030. the news of "needing a gasket" is never good. yet one cedar rapids company is using

the area. protestors in ames are trying to let more people know about puppy mill awareness month. they say iowa has more than 220 puppy mills, the second largest amount in the country. protesters say that equals about 17,000 dogs, whose sole purpose is breeding. they say there are major differences between a puppy mill and a reputable breeder. a coordinator with the animal rescue league says he's removed almost 300 dogs from puppy mills. he says u-s-d-a and state standards for puppy mill owners aren't tough enough. "the a never see sunlight, they're never out of their cages, they don't receive the most basic veterinary care. " protesters are encouraging those looking for a dog to adopt from a local shelter. the humane society reports that iowa has 10 out of the worst 100 dog breeders in the country. every police officer in cedar falls will soon use a body camera while on duty. the department has raised the 30-thousand

falls order of eastern star pushed the department over its goal. the chicago police department says it'll expand the use of body cameras to include all officers on patrol within two years. the department says number of body cameras will increase by several thousand. "beginning next year, we will outfit an additional seven police districts and the final round of districts will be completed in 2018. " chicago police launched a body-cam pilot officer's body camera didn't appear to be recording during the deadly july shooting of 18-year-old paul o'neal. that raised questions about whether officers can switch the cameras off intentionally. an iowa city man faces charges for allegedly burglarizing a home and attacking 2 people inside. police arrested santiago garcia on a 1st degree burglary charge on saturday night. police say he forced his way into a home at forest view mobile home court in july.

object, going after the man's head. a substance abuse treatment agency will use some of the space at the former mental health institute in clarinda. the iowa department of corrections is expected to sign a three-year contract with zion recovery services this month. zion wants to rent four wards to offer residential treatment at the facility in clarinda. this deal could complicate any efforts to reopen the state-run institute. the iowa supreme court is reviewing a lawsuit that challenges governor branstad's decisi facility. president obama wants the nation to remember people who died of opioid overdoses this week. he has declared this an awareness week for opioid and heroin overdoses. the president wants people to hold events to bring more attention to the dangers of those drugs. he says the number of deadly overdoses from those drugs has almost quadrupled in the past 17-years. in 2014, more than 1,500 iowans visited the emergency room because of opioid use. that same year, 42 people died

the new york metro area is on edge this morning after a pipe bomb exploded overnight in new jersey, just miles away from new york city. authorities found five bombs in a backpack, one of them exploded after bomb experts attempted to disarm it. morning commuters may have to take a different train into the city, with some service suspended. f-b-i agents also pulled over a car in brooklyn last night and are questioning the vehicle's occupants in connection with the weekend bombing in manhattan. that bo in the chelsea district, injuring 29 people. now new york city is bracing for an onslaught of security with world leaders arriving for the u-n general assembly. ""you will see a very substantial nypd presence this week. bigger than ever. we would normally have an expanded presence for the united nations general assembly. you will see an even stronger presence now." " authorities say security inside the summit

the mound view neighborhood yesterday to clean up garbage. the neighborhood sits between the two colleges on the northeast side of the city. organizers say the event helps improve quality of life in the area. and it gives the students a chance to get to know the neighborhood. don't hear too much about.. but colleges like dmacc.. kirkwood.. and iowa state have degrees for just that.. one of the ways they gear students with some practical experience.. is through service days. "well this is an excellent opportunity for students from dmacc and kirkwood where we're working in what's called the iowa nursery and landscape association in-service day. hello, my name's jim mason. i'm an adjunct instructor in commercial horticulture at dmacc. the association provids an institution like the iowa arboretum like where we're at today. of course it doesn't compete with rural crops and such, but it's a very strong portion of agribusiness i believe. i think it's really under rated. when you start talking the umbrella of

trees, greenhouses, landscape opportunities, farmers markets. it really adds up to be a pretty substantial portion of the economy in the state of iowa." mason says the in service days lets students interact with fellow students from other colleges, other horticultural professionals like those at the iowa arboretum, as well as other professionals that are a landscape association. ---- most of the markets saw end of the week rallies.. with speculators waiting on harvest to ramp up this week. "the thing we have in the grain markets here going into the weekend is more positioning short covering funds getting out of their big short position in corn and wheat. willing to stay with their long position on soybeans, we've had an awful lot of moisture in the western midwest giving just a little bit of support to the soybeans on concern of the harvest not going as

but overall, realistically we're in a big, broad trading range on hold for the start of the fat portion of the harvest that is yet to come. start to pick up a bit more next week." "the cattle market has had a real strong week this week. looks like we've put in a solid cash low at the present time. looks like the boxed beef levels also down around this 185. finding some buying interest. packer margins, retail margins are large and pulling cattle ahead and the weights are current on cattle." "the hog market just continues to sit at contract lows. we do have supplies that are going to be large in the fourth quarter and all of next year we're going to have hog supplies forcast to be up three and a half percent over this last year so rallies are really going to be anchored by just large supplies of not only hogs but also poultry and beef." ---- the senate passed a two year water resources development act.. in a 95 to three vote.. ylast week.. the

the driver of a motorcycle died in a crash in waterloo. it happened around 10-45 last night. officials say the driver missed a curve on westfield avenue. waterloo fire rescue took him to the hospital where he later died. authorities haven't released his name. the f-b-i and new jersey state police found five jersey city of elizabeth overnight. the mayor there says one found in a backpack near a train station exploded while a bomb squad robot was attempting to disarm it this morning. elizabeth is about 30 minutes south of new york city, where there was another bombing this weekend. the f-b-i was leading the investigation and working to disarm the other 4 devices. there are no reports of injuries. officials say 2 men called police after seeing wires and a pipe coming out of a package in a trash can last

we'll have the latest on the investigation into the violent attacks over the weekend in new york city and minnesota. the presidential running mates to hillary clinton and donald trump will be in iowa today. republican mike pence will hold an event in mason city this afternoon. then he'll visit giese manufacturing in dubuque. pence was on a-b-c's sunday morning yesterday talking about trump's latest second amendment comments toward clinton. trump made a comment dropping their guns and seeing what would happen. the indiana governor defended the comments. " i think what donald trump was saying is that if she didn't have all that security, she'd probably be a whole lot more supportive of the second amendment." " pence also fired back at the coverage of the trump, saying the media spends more time on trump's last day than clinton's last 30 years. democrat tim kaine will appear at memorial union on the iowa state university campus at two this afternoon. the hillary

" but kaine says clinton was right to call out "dark emotions." in the body contract. they don't move normally, and they can get stuck in one position. but, with a lot of surgery, therapy, and support.. she's starting her new life. this is sasha. she's your typical teenager, and besides her love of soccer. there's two things she loves to do. 23:23 "mostly hanging out with my friends, being in my power chair rolling around." each morning she gets in her chair and zips up and down the driveway before school but, sasha has always had another idea of getting around. 35:13 "we heard about her when she was 11 and a half, and we just knew she was going to be our daughter." 35:42 "when i first met her in ukraine, one the things she told me was 'i want to walk" the duval family adopted sasha three and a half years ago. her parents made it their mission to help her meet her goal. doctors said she was too far along in her condition to walk. but that didn't stop them, they traveled for months at a time, went through numerous procedures 36:37 "we asked her before we did this, we said this looks

heard from sasha 'i want to walk, i want to play soccer.' " after all of the surgeries, and 11 weeks of intense therapy....sasha took her first steps. 24:29 "i think i like it, i really like it. for someone who's never walked before, i'm excited." her parents couldn't be more proud. 37:55 "i cried, i can't i cried i posted all kinds of photos on facebook. i was super excited." sasha can walk as far as 550 feet. now that she's starting high school, grant wood a-e-a will help her walk the halls as well. getting her one step closer to her goals. sasha still has a lot of therapy ahead of her, but she should be able to go on living an independent life. she wants to get married, have kids, and especially play soccer.

found a body in the search for a missing luther college student. decorah police reported bjorn norderhaug missing saturday. someone last saw him around 2 a-m on saturday morning at the corner bar in decorah. that's a couple of miles from the luther campus. investigators say found the 21-year-old student's body after a search along the upper iowa river. around 9:30 on sunday morning, the sheriffs office received a report that a body was found in the river, near clay hill road outside of decorah. officials soon norderhaug. in a statement, the luther college president said "the luther community is devastated by this loss and continue to pray for bjorn's family. we ask that the community come together and support one another in this difficult time" last night, people all throughout luther gathered for a prayer service to remember norderhaug. this comes about a week after authorities found a u-n-i student dead in the iowa river in iowa city. first responders pulled the body of 20- year-old nathan twedt of marion from the river on september 10th.

the circumstances that led to his death. des moines police are investigating a hit and run at a youth sports complex, that sent two people to the hospital. one victim is in critical condition. it happened around 9 a-m sunday, at the highland park little league complex -- which can be seen from i-80 and i-35 just east of the merle hay exit. police say a man chased and hit two others with his truck while the group cleaned up debris from an event saturday night. witnesses say the suspect then crashed into a concession stand before police later found him wal "first it started with a loud noise that i heard and then i looked over at the building where i heard the sound from and i saw a white truck come out, do about a 360 in the grass and then run into the building " one victim is in critical condition. it took several officers to arrest the suspect. medics also took the suspect to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. police are not releasing their names at this point. despite talks leading up to the federal reserve

law enforcement is trying to figure out if explosions in new york city and new jersey are related. overnight, a bomb squad detonated one of five devices found in elizabeth, new jersey. on saturday night, a bomb went off in new york city hurting 29 people. hours before that, a pipe bomb exploded 60 miles south in seaside heights, the halls of high school after several surgeries and a lot of hard work. sasha duval has a rare joint disorder that kept her from walking. with surgeries and physical therapies, duval was able to take her first steps in the last few months. authorities have found the body of a missing luther college student in a river. yesterday, decorah police reported finding bjorn norderhaug in the upper iowa river. he had been missing since early saturday morning.
