this is the kcrg-tv9 sunday morning news. good morning and thanks for joining us. we begin with first alert storm team meteorologis t britley ritz. scattered showers and a few storms continue this morning and into the afternoon. the heaviest counties of the tv9 viewing area. high temperatures today will be much cooler, only topping out into the 70s. the showers and storms will taper off into the evening as the cold front begins to push through the area. clouds will begin to break and we'll see some clearing into the overnight hours. this will allow for our temperatures to drop into 50s overnight and early tomorrow morning. dry conditions set in and stay with us for the

continue rising to 23.5 feet tuesday morning. fall below flood stage saturday morning. impact...at 23.5 feet...water reaches the bottom of the county road f28 bridge deck at cedar bluff. the flood warning continues for the cedar river near conesville. until further notice. at 9:00 pm saturday the stage was 13.5 feet...and rising. flood stage is 13 feet. minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast. uncertainty remains on forecast rainfall and how water routes through the river system. are asked to be out of their homes by 8:00 tonight. here's a map of the voluntary evacuation zone. water will be high enough to flood parts of downtown, newbo, czech village and the time check neighborhoods. the evacuations are not mandatory, but are highly encouraged. if you do decide to stay behind, police will be enforcing

morning. evacuees should plan on being out of their homes through saturday. if you're not sure if you're in the evacuation zone, you can find a link to this map our website, kcrg dot com. in the search bar, type in your address. if you need a place to stay during the evacuation, the city has set up an emergency shelter at cedar hills community church in cedar rapids. that's located at 64- 55 e avenue northwest. it's just east of the intersection for stoney point road northwest. truck-loads of dirt are trying to protect the from any major flooding. overnight, dump trucks were building berms along the river. the walls there will be about 7 or eight feet high. crews we talked to at the scene said the berms will protect against a crest of about 26 or 27 feet. again, the projected crest in cedar rapids right now is well below that at 23 point 5 feet. downtown, crews are filling hesco barriers to stop flooding. volunteers and city workers have been busy filling

around the downtown. those hesco barriers are going up on both sides of the river. the city is deploying four thousand feet of the barriers with earthen levees and berms. residents in vinton are preparing for the cedar river to crest at, one a-m tomorrow. the river level just hit major flood stage a little after 6:00 this morning. kcrg-tv9's brea love joins us live this morning from vinton. brea, what is the cedar the city of vinton started preparations for the cedar river to flood thursday, and by saturday afternoon the city said it's prepared. the river is set to crest at 22 feet monday. saturday residents spent the afternoon watching. joining us now, the mayor of the city of vinton started preparations

thursday, and by saturday afternoon the city said it's prepared. the river is set to crest at 22 feet monday. saturday residents spent the afternoon watching. they started sandbagging the town over the past few days and now there's nothing left to be done. barbara ender-wright lived in vinton during 2008. her home was safe during the flood, but she hopes this flood does one thing. benton county emergency management coordinator scott hansen said the community wide effort for preparations built a hesco barrier to protect the city's fire station and electrical systems which sit along the cedar river.

been very rough for the iowa state football team. the cyclones turned the tables today against san jose state. scott westerberg has the highlights. the cyclones and spartans meeting for the first time ever and it didn't take long for iowa state to set the tone...joel lanning up top to allen lazard...does he get a foot down? at first the refs say no, but they'd review it and reverse it...7-0 isu... san jose state marches right down the field but on third and goal, brian mills flies into the backfield and loss....the spartans would settle for a short field goal to make it a 7-3 game late in the first quarter... san jose state gets the ball back and takes to the air but jomal wiltz goes up and takes one away...the flag was for offensive pass interference....cyclones ball... from there, cole netton drills a 49 yard field goal to put iowa state in front 10-3... jacob park takes over at quarterback for isu in the second quarter and he hits lazard over the middle for a big gain deep into spartan territory... mike warren finishes the drive with a short touchdown run

"for me, it's great for those kids downstairs. today is a by-product of what those kids have been able to do on sunday, on tuesday, on wednesday and thursday. they were locked in." what a day for the iowa state quarterbacks. the two combined to go 22 of 29 for 316 yards and 5 touchdowns. coach campbell says he's not sure exactly how he'll use them next

morning. a that crest level, water will flood parts of downtown, newbo, czech village and time check neighborhoods. though it's not mandatory, the city is urging people to evacuate those areas. if you do decide to stay behind, police will be enforcing a curfew from 8:00 at night until 7:00 in the morning. those that decide to leave, by eight tonight, should plan on being out of their homes through saturday. unsure if you're in the evacuation zone? you can find a link to this map on kcrg dot com. address. if you need a place to stay during the evacuation, the city has set up an emergency shelter at cedar hills community church in cedar rapids. that's located at 64- 55 e avenue northwest. it's east of the intersection for stoney point road northwest. that shelter is also available for the roughly 80 homes evacuating from palo. people there were sandbagging in the southeast part of town after the

a big portion of palo flooded in 2008, and many of those homes will be taking on water again. "we're very much professionals now, we would say, we're ready, we've been helping neighbors, my parents, our neighbors, we're ready, hopefully it doesn't get that high though." unlike cedar rapids, the evacuation in palo is mandatory. here in cedar rapids, the city has already preemptively shut down several roads ahead of this week's flooding. here are just some of the areas the cit s crews have already shut off access to all downtown bridges. the city is restricting access to portions of downtown to allow for flood preps. ellis road west of edgewood road is also closed. as is otis road along the sac and fox trail in southeast cedar rapids. and as a reminder, don't travel to areas along the river unless you are helping with flood preparations. driving or

shooting of a charlotte north carolina man continued for a fifth night overnight. with a curfew in were mostly peaceful for a 2nd night in a row. saturday's marches came as police released dash cam video showing the shooting of 43-year-old keith scott. it's not apparent in the video if scott is holding a gun like police have said. scott's family says he was unarmed. this week, democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton will be back in iowa. the former secretary of state has a campaign stop scheduled in des moines on

an exact time or location for the event. thursday is also the first day of early voting in iowa. former republican presidential candidate ted cruz officially endorsed donald trump for president. the texas senator took some heat for not endorsing the nominee during the republican national convention in july. cruz says he and trump still have their difference, but says hillary clinton would be a quote 'disaster for this country'. the endorsement comes just before the fr shows hillary clinton with a narrow lead of 46 to 44 percent. that's within the margin of error. tomorrow night's debate begins at 8:00 p-m. you can watch it live right here on kcrg-tv9. we'll take another look at your first alert forecast, next. stay with tv9.
