from your 24 hour news source, this is kcrg-tv9 news at 10 . of support for two police officers a gunman ambushed early this morning. the man shot and killed urbandale police officer justin martin. just minutes later, more gunshots took the life of des moines police sergeant tony beminio. people who knew the officers say they were hard working and thoughtful. and friends say they should be remembered as leaders in their communities. police say this is the man who killed them: scott greene, of urbandale. he is 46 years old.

resisting an officer trying to pat him down for a weapon. and threatening to kill another man during a confrontatio n in a parking lot. and today, police say he targeted officers. possible rifle rounds, there is an officer down ... polk county does confirm an officer down police say greene shot and killed officer martin while martin was in his squad car. that was just after one this morning near urbandale high school. minutes later, and a couple of miles away, police say greene fired into another sergeant beminio. several hours later, police named greene as a suspect. greene turned himself in by flagging down a d-n-r employee on a road in dallas county, just west of des moines. authorities took him to a local hospital for treatment. and tonight, many people who knew the two officers are remembering them. t-v nine's jordee kalk joins us on the story. jordee, one of the officers was from eastern iowa. i spoke to classmates and former teachers of

from iowa city west before going onto simpson college. they tell me they will remember "tony" as a giant force on the football field. and friends say these protective instincts carried over to his life as a police officer. 6:55, "our group of seniors, that class of 96, had a pretty special bond. especially when it came to what we could do on and off the football field."tony beminio transferred to iowa west high school as a sophomore. friendss became a standout athlete, particularly on the gridiron. 59:36, "people just kind of ran behind him he plowed the way.."he's left a legacy at the high school, with his own portrait on the athletic hall of fame. beminio was a state champion wrestler. but friends say he took the most pride in playing on the 1995 football team. 59:27, "definitely competitive definitely knew what he wanted to do and he

football team turned around." the 1995 iowa west team took the state title that year. coaches say much of that credit goes to beminio. 17:42, "the program turned around during their time in high school going from a team that was a laughing stock of the conference to a state champion team. the boys had a record of 13 and 0 that season. 18:09, 'they truly had that bond where the guy next to him was the most important guy in their lives." those who knew him say this discipline carried over into beminio's life as police officer. 17:20, "trying to be a public servent and work hard to they should have been done the 39-year-old had been with the des moines police department for 11 years. beminio wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps, who was also a cop. 00:42, "makes sense he would take a job like that friends say beminio would want to be remembered

explain what it meant to everyone involved it was pretty special and to lose somebody from that just makes it that much more difficult" current hawkeye football defensive line coach reese morgan was the west high coach for that 1995 team. i spoke with coach morgan just a few moments ago and he told me he's deeply saddened about bemino's death. he also says beminio was an unforgettable guy. bruce and beth? thanks, jordee. urbandale police officer ju single. he had been on the urbandale police force for a year. martin grew up in rockwell city, where he became an eagle scout. he also graduated from simpson college. the shootings are part of a spike in killings of law enforcement officers this year. there have been 52 officers killed this year. that's compared with 33 at the same time last

ambush attacks. in july, a man ambushed a group of officers in dallas during an organized protest in the downtown area. that shootings killed five officers and injured nine others. the killer apparently wanted to kill white people, especially officers, in retaliation to police shootings of black men. about a week later, a man shot and killed three police officers and injured three others in baton rouge, louisiana. he, too, seemed to be at least partly motivated by retaliation against white officers. state are on high alert after what they believe were targeted shootings of the two officers. kcrg t-v nine's samantha myers joins us from our newsroom. samantha, you spoke with waterloo police? waterloo police chief dan trelka says when he heard about the news, he immediately thought of the families of the two officers. and this morning, he sent out an email to his officers calling on them to

16:27:04;11 "this is an attack on society." waterloo police chief dan trelka says he feels disgust sadness and anger. 16:26:37;20 "these officers aren't dying because of who they are, they're dying because of what they're wearing, and they're wearing a badge." the events hit close to home in eastern iowa, but even closer for those on the des moines and urbandale police forces. imagine that you lost a friend or you can describe it, a very helpless feeling at times, but the sorrow that comes with it is just as if you lost someone close to you, i mean these were our friends, they are our co- workers, mw-006wetrelka says his department has been working on improving relations between police officers and the community. 16:28:07;27 "as law enforcement we need to do a better job of explaining the rules to community so that we can avoid some of these needless arrests." but in times of tragedy, there comes an outpouring of

cupcakes, the pizza the soda" 16:24:33;24 "we're humbled by the show of support by our community" and throughout the day in des moines and urbandale, people have been leaving flowers at memorials that have been set up in front of the police departments. live in the newsroom, samantha myers, kcrg- tv9. one act of kindness happened in urbandale just hours after the shooting. a woman brought water and food to an officer, and hugged him in moment. " i cant even imagine. this is the only thing i know. i want you guys to be hydrated and not hungry/ i want you to go home to your families, and i want my dad to come home

funds for the families of the fallen officers. hy-vee says all des moines- area stores will collect donations for the families. and the company will give 25-thousand dollars to each officer's family. hurts donuts in coralville is also raising money for the o noon on friday the shop will sell "thin blue line" donuts with all proceeds going to the families. already this afternoon, people were lined up through the doors to get the donuts. the owner of hurts donuts says he just wanted to give back to the community. 11:50 "we have a business that's about to open up there so were new to that community. we want to show support for that community show our support " hurts donuts sold more than a thousand of these thin-blue- line donuts in the first four
