bye-bye. right now, live at five, a dangerous virus is spreading rapidly - and could cause birth defects.see how close the threat *is to the u-s. but first, breaking into the newsroom right now, cedar rapids police are investigating a shooting. police confirm the shooting happened after 3:30 near 15th street southeast and beaver avenue. they say one person was hit but are not releasing their name or the extent of the injuries. police say no one is in custody and they are still investigating the scene. stay with cbs 2 and we'll keep you updated as the story develops. now, let's check in with chief meteorologist terry swails. swails.we're closing in on the weekend so let's find out what we can expect from the skies

some veterans groups are actually pushing back against donald trump's veterans fundraising event tonight. they're condemning the billionaire's fued with fox news anchor megan kelly. the iraq and afghanistan veterans of america - pledged to refuse any funds that trump may try to donate from his iowa event. vote-vets-dot-org says trump should not use veterans to hide from megan kelly. on the democratic side, candidates are working the ground game hard in iowa. hillary clinton held a conversation on the program "every child matters" in newton today. through the weekend, she'll be making stops with her husband former president bill clinton and daughter chelsea.they'll be in davenport, ames, carroll and

spending caucus night at a party at drake university in des moines. clinton's closest rival in the state, vermont senator bernie sanders is also spending the days leading up to the caucus in the hawkeye state. today he held a volunteer canvass launch in ottumwa and a rally with susan sarandon in fairfield. this weekend sanders will be holding rallies across the corridor from cedar rapids to iowa city, and waterloo. he will also be spending caucus night at a watch party in des moines. maryland governor martin o'malley is beginning his caucus weekend tour in western iowa in sioux city tomorrow. he will head to the corridor sunday with a door-knocking event in cedar rapids. o'malley is also spending caucus night at a watch party in des moines. the so-called affluenza teen is back in the u-s tonight. 18-year old ethan couch landed in dallas after a flight from mexico where he fled to in december with his mother.the

surfaced showing couch violated his parole.couch received parole instead of a prison sentence after driving drunk in 2013 - killing four people.the judge agreed with an expert witness who argued that couch grew up too rich and privileged to know right from wrong.the light sentence drew outrage from families of the victims - and other groups like mothers against drunk driving.couch has a hearing tomorrow on where he is to be held pending new charges. right now.. several leaders in johnson county are back at work with some new ideas.a group headed to a community in texas earlier this week to find alternatives to putting people behind bars.cbs 2 news reporter mellaney moore learned what the leaders hope to bring back to johnson county. county. organizers say one goal of this training is to stop the revolving door to emergency rooms and jails because people aren't getting the help that they need. san antonio uses a technique called crisis

beaumont texas authorities were called to a school on a report of an unconsious child in the nurses office. they arrived to find a gas leak may have lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. more than 100- people were transported out of the school - some showing symptoms.they were taken to a local hospital - and all are expected to recover. happening right now - the world health organization is planning an emergency meeting on the zika virus on monday. the virus is apparently spreading explosively and the agency is considering declaring it an international health emergency.health experts in central and south america say the mosquito-borne virus may be linked to birth defects. u-s health officials are taking precautions. they're urging pregnant women not to travel to the affected regions unless absolutely necessary. right now - the country is marking the 30th anniversary of the challenger tragedy. situation, obviously a major malfunction." malfunction."nasa paid tribute to the crews of appollo one and space shuttles challenger and columbia as well as their colleagues during this day of remembrance. seven members of the challenger crew died on the morning of january 28, 1986, when a booster engine failed, causing the shuttle challenger to break apart just 73-seconds after launch. a cedar rapids broadcaster is being mourned tonight. long-time k-c-c-k personality mark yother died today after a sudden illness. yother was a broadcaster for more than 40-years and worked for the american forces radio network while serving in the military. mark also hosted a daily music show, a movie review program, and humorous commentary.mark

could be above freezing this weekend. after that, there will be a change in the pattern... a big dip in the jet stream coming early next week which could be a winter storm. first there could be a weak system on sunday with some rain and snow, then a strong system increasing rain and snow chances on monday night into tuesday which could be significant snowfall, but it is too soon to know the exact numbers right now. we'll continue to update you here and on cbs two iowa dot com slash weather. first we can
