later this morning. as we go into this campaign, what is hillary's biggest asset and her biggest liability. >> i think it's the same thing. experience. more than a generation on the national stage. what that brings her she enters the race in the most commanding position of any candidate not a sitting president going into this. she has contacts. she has deep support across the democratic party. the ability to raise a boat load of money. at the same time, how does someone who has been around as long as hillary clinton make this campaign about the future? that's the challenge of any presidential candidate. it's a big challenge for her. >> last time she ran, she didn't make a gender appeal. that will change this time, we hear. why? is it likely to work? >> no question her team thinks it was a big mistake now not to have emphasized that the last time she ran. back in 2008, when all they talked about was strength. they thought they had to show and project strength. they trieded to down play it. and they have a new approach. she just wrote a new afterword

says he told raul castro he's reading the state department's review and the recommendation to take cuba off the terrorist list this week. a handshake five decades in the making. not since dwight eisenhower had the presidents of cuba and the u.s. met face to face. >> this is obviously an historic meeting. >> reporter: raul castro, the old revolutionary who fought alongside his brother fidel in 1959. to overthrow a u.s. backed dictator. then repelled a u.s.-sponsored invasion at the bay of pigs. and allowed the soviet union to build missile bases 90 miles from florida, sat beside the president of the united states, who told me at a press conference following the historic meeting that america was no longer determined to overthrow the castros. >> we are not in the business of regime change. the cold war is over. >> reporter: raul castro called president obama an honest man.

and when the photo op ended, i asked the cuban leader if he ever imagined such a moment. the cuban foreign minister told me in an exclusive interview -- >> yes, i did. i imagined this moment. i worked for this moment. >> reporter: president obama promised to continue to press cuba for more freedom for its people. >> we will continue to try to lift up concerns around democracy and human rights. >> reporter: raul castro says there are real differences between the united states and his country on human rights. but nothing is off the table. dan? >> jim avila, witnessing history in panama city. thank you. back here at home, an arrest in the abduction of a jewelry store worker. an extraordinarily brutal crime that played out on this surveillance tape. one suspect in custody. two others on the lam. abc's gloria riviera has the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this crime timed precisely down to the minute the victim left work. but when she didn't have what the thieves wanted, she paid the price. this morning, a manhunt under

way for this red van and two suspects allegedly involved in a horrifying kidnapping. >> i can tell you she's been through nothing short of torture. >> reporter: the terrifying abduction caught on camera. watch as this red cargo van enters the parking garage near the victim's jewelry store minutes before she leaves work. another camera watches her walk offscreen to her car. minutes later, the same van reappears, leaving the garage, police say with the victim bound and blindfolded in the back. >> they put a hood over her face. they tie-wrapped her. they were tasering her. what they wanted from her were the codes and the alarm systems. >> reporter: according to police, the woman didn't even know the codes. for almost 90 minutes, her abductors beat her and tased her multiple times. stealing her phone, house keys, and atm card. even stopping once at a crowded gas station on the way to this remote cemetery to where she was

dumped with metal shackles on her feet. investigators say that's where the woman was able to flag down a passing good samaritan. >> there's a person screaming for a female supposedly tied up across the street from a cemetery. >> reporter: this morning, 31-year-old khayree gay who police say has a criminal past is awaiting charges in a philadelphia courtroom monday morning. his alleged victim is recovering at home. the mayor's office is offering a $10,000 reward for her other two attackers. >> she's holding up well, considering what she's been through. >> reporter: many of us know this from movies. but it is actually a real-life policy for banks and other luxury goods stores for regular employees not to know codes precisely for safety reasons. were they so sure they were going to get the big take? or is this the work of small-time criminals, sloppy work? >> she is doing better. the other thieves are still on the loose. they got nothing out of it. >> reporter: they got nothing. she's recovering. >> right, gloria, thank you.

new developments in the police shooting death of the unarmed black man in south carolina. walter scott was laid to rest after an emotional funeral. so many questions remain as to what happened and why he fled police. abc's kendis gibson joins now with more from north charleston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, paula. i'll tell you, community activists have been gathering at city hall and other locations, ever since the death of walter scott, little more than a week ago. the protests have been calm and peaceful. but they want to have their voices heard. [ gunfire ] this morning, the shocking death of walter scott, still reverberating in the north charleston community. ♪ we shall overcome ♪ >> reporter: overnight, dozens of residents marched to city hall, calling for justice. >> no justice! >> all: no peace! >> reporter: scott, now laid to rest following an emotional funeral saturday in which so

many calling his death a catalyst for change. >> something definitely needs to be done. i'm believing through walter's death that it will turn things around. >> reporter: there are now three separate videos capturing the shooting and the moments surrounding it. still, many questions remain. why did the 50-year-old bolt from his car after being stopped by officer michael slager? the scott family lawyer with a new theory. >> it is our belief that at the time you see him run away on dash cam, it's because he did not want to go back to jail for his failure to pay child support. because it had happened before. more than once. >> reporter: and what did police learn from this mystery passenger who was inside scott's car? this morning, two investigations are now under way into the shooting. one by detectives with the state. the other by officer slager's newly hired attorney. slager remains in the county jail this morning, his movements

carefully watched. for protection from other inmates. in the meantime, some out of town civil rights speakers will be here today to take part in other services and protests. paula? dan? >> kendis, thank you. let's look at the other developing stories with ron claiborne. good morning, sir. >> good morning to you, dan, paula, sara. robert. good morning, everyone. police in washington, d.c., on alert this morning after a gunman took his own life outside the capitol building. sparking a lockdown on one of the busiest weekends of the year in the nation's capital. police rushed to shut down the area around the capitol building saturday afternoon. everyone inside was locked in place for two hours. d.c. packed with visitors this weekend. the cherry blossom festival. some capturing the moments on their cell phones when that man fatally shot himself. turns overseas. an iraqi city, what appears to be blown to dust.

the new video posted online appears to confirm reports from last month that the terror group fighters were smashing art facts in the ancient city of nimrud. it follows similar attacks on other archaeological treasures. and orthodox christians around the world are celebrating easter today. hundreds of pilgrims gathered at the church of the holy sepulcher in jerusalem on saturday. in a 1200 year tradition, pilgrims lit their candles from a fire believed to be from jesus' tomb. on one island in greece, locals celebrate the holiday by setting off rockets. take a look at this police-involved shooting. the suspect in an undercover gun and buy drug situation. they have the suspect on the ground. then a reserve deputy says, taser, taser. but a gunshot is fired. you hear the reserve officer say, i am sorry. the suspect was shot. he died later. tulsa police said the reserve officer, inadvertently, their word, fired his weapon.

thinking he was using his taser and instead used his gun. their investigation, they say, is now complete. so, you're sitting in a car in hollywood. near hollywood boulevard, and this happens. check this out. this is what happened to somebody. that's a toyota prius on top of another car. it somehow drove or climbed or got on to the top of the silver car there on the offramp of the hollywood freeway. according to the person who snapped the picture, the driver of the prius then tried to drive away. she ended up stuck. however, luckily no one was injured. >> photo-shopped. >> it could be. finally, a young golfer from texas on the brink of making golfing history in augusta, georgia at the masters tournament. heading into today's final round holding a four-shot lead over some of the sport's biggest stars. >> and tiger. >> reporter: it's been almost 20 years since then 21-year-old tiger woods became the youngest golfer to win the masters. the first of his 14 majors. this year's masters, another young american golfer is taking

augusta by storm. breaking course records. jordan spieth, 21 years old himself, on the brink of winning golf's most prestigious tournament. >> get there. get there! there it is! >> reporter: he's one of golf's best young players. at the masters, he's been, well, masterful. setting a tournament record in each of the first three rounds. on thursday, he became the youngest player to hold the first round lead. he broke the 36-hold scoring mark on friday, at 14 under par. and his saturday round put him at 16 under par to break the 54-hole record last set by, you guessed it, tiger woods. it's not just his golf game that is impressive. his high school sweetheart, annie verret, has been gaining just as much popularity on social media. a lot of pressure on this guy. a four-stroke lead, as rob knows, is not safe by any means. >> that can go away quickly. >> it would be great to see a new champ. >> the winner gets $1.8 million. >> before taxes.

meanwhile, fashion plate kate's maternity wardrobe in the headlines sunday with one uk newspaper estimating she's spent more than $40,000. though she's worn several of her outfits previously. still, it's unlikely anyone's complaining. another paper polling its readers said nearly 60% would prefer to have prince william and kate as the next king and queen, bypassing prince charles and camilla. >> it's not a popularity contest. it's a monarchy. charles is next in line to the throne after the queen. my view, absolutely no way, unless he dies before the queen. >> reporter: will and kate likely more than happy to wait. keen to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible. royal sources reveal they will not be hiring an additional nanny. also this morning, news that when his wife goes into labor, prince william will have a police escort to help with his nail-biting two-hour mad dash to the hospital. the prince currently working

outside of london, training for his new job as an air ambulance helicopter pilot. royal sources tell us prince william will take two weeks paternity leave while the duchess will take much longer than she did after prince george was born. probably spending several months at the couple's country estate, just a couple hours north of london. dan and paula? >> i love how they make a big deal about her wearing the same outfit twice. during pregnancy. >> heaven forbid. >> heaven forbid. heaven forbid, are we going to have a good forecast across most of the united states today? >> quiet for a good chunk of the northeast. we do have some storms we want to talk about. we mentioned yesterday. across the texas panhandle these things fired up. that's what they did. some golf ball-sized hail. upwards to tennis ball-sized hail. we can keep the sports analogies going. 2.75 inches in diameter in some spots. that's enough to do a little bit of damage. we expect similar action today. one report of a tornado across southwest kansas.

a slight chance of tornadoes today. it will be about the same as yesterday in that large hail will be the main issue. we have storms in kansas that will fizzle out as they head into more stable air. another round as the cold front slides across the central plains later on today. that's where we'll see severe weather chances from wichita up through kansas city. the gulf coast, this stationary boundary dumped a lot of rain in texas. gets into houston later on today. and through tomorrow. through tuesday, we're pushing it toward the east. it will be dry today. for the masters, though a little bit cloudy. 2 to 4 inches of rainfall across the i-10. 70 in san diego. a glorious 70 in washingto

and jessica biel are brand-new parents this morning. welcome, justin and jessica, to the land of no sleep. who they named their baby after. and the reaction from grandma coming up. first, a truly extraordinary story about family celebrating their own miracle. >> that's right. sharista giles became a new mom three months ago. but didn't know it until this week. now her family speaking out about the new signs of hope for both mom and baby. after months of being in a coma, a mother miraculously wakes up to find out she's already had her baby. it was just before christmas sharista giles, four months pregnant, was severely injured in a car accident after attending a concert with friends. >> it was a rainy december night. she had taken off her seat belt. she was laying in the fetal position, facing the driver, with her feet laid back. they got off the exit, off the interstate and they hydroplaned. and hit the concrete barrier head on. >> reporter: her brain injuries so severe leaving the young

mother in a coma and her unborn son at risk. at only 26s, baby l. as the family calls him, was delivered by cesarean section. weighing 1 pound, 14 ounces. >> they kept him in as long as they could. because he needed to grow more. when she first went into the coma, he would not be able to survive on his own. >> reporter: the family devastated with the realization that her baby boy may never get to meet his mother. >> they knew that she was in a coma and that the prognosis wasn't looking good. we hoped she would wake up after the baby was born. >> reporter: but then, this past week, a miracle. >> my aunt called me and said she had opened her eyes. if i had heard. i said no. i said praise the lord. >> reporter: more than that, family members say she's been responsive. turning her head and even smiling. >> she's got a bulletin next to her bed of all the pictures of her baby and pictures of her before the accident. of her pregnancy. >> reporter: the family raising

announcement officially on social media later today. president obama said on saturday he thinks she would make an excellent president. president obama is describing saturday's meeting with cuba's president raul castro as candid and fruitful. not since dwight eisenhower have the presidents of cuba and the united states met face to face. and rapper and reality tv star nelly is facing felony drug charges this morning after a tennessee state trooper pulled over the private bus in which he was riding. it happened on saturday. officers said they found several types of drugs, including meth and marijuana and numerous handguns. nelly is out on bond. and finally the famed blue angels are making history. the newest angel is katie higgins, the first ever female pilot in the team's 61-year history. the marine corps captain is showing off her skills this weekend for fans at the beaufort air show in south carolina. she's piloting the c-130.
