>> it's sunday, october 11th. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. here's lisa argen with a first look at the doppler hd. hi, lisa. >> good morning, chris. this morning temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 60s around the bay. it's 67. san mateo 61. and fremont with 59 in antioch, vallejo and napa. without much in the way of fog, temperatures will warm a little quicker today. we will have a few clouds early on but they should burn back. we should see plenty of 70s and 80s today.
it begins our warmup the first part of the work work. i'll tell when you it ends and if there's a cool down coming up in the next seven days. chris. >> the blue angels return to the skies over san francisco today at 3:00. one million fines were looking to the sky for saturday's show but after the show they headed home into gridlock. cornell bernard was along san francisco's embark dare owe. >> the familiar war over san francisco's waterfront can mean only one thing, absolute angels were back, taking flight above the bay. it was worth looking up. >> it's spectacular. almost have no words for it. it's so beautiful. >> the white knuckle precision acrobatics exciting and kind of unnerving to leia. >> it has to be the scariest part when they get a little too
close. >> the jets are only 18 inches apart sometimes. but when the airshow was over, shouses of drivers perform their own unrehearsed show called traffic gridlock. a nightmare trying to get home. >> it's worse than los angeles. it's way worse. >> san francisco police were trying to direct traffic around bottlenecks which lasted for hours. public transit wasn't much better. muni street cars were jam-packed. >> not fun. they are blocking the intersection. naughty, naughty. >> the blue angels sport crew met fans at pier39 and signed autographs. this six-year-old dressed in glasses and a night suit got some career advice. >> stanford grad met her idol,

was very windy and last time we had a huge wind and fire we had the angora fire so it was scary that we may have another huge fire where we lose a bunch of homes. >> an faa spokesman said the plane crashed early after takeoff yesterday from the lake tahoe airport, skimming the trees in a residential neighborhood before crashing. known in the house was injured. the crash is being investigated. a hiker who may have been injured running from a mountain lion was carried to safety last night in contra costa county. rescuers responded in the afternoon to a remote trail. the hiker was located on the trail, but it was too steep for a ground plans or mel copter rescue. they hiker was finally taken to the medical center for treatment. all of us have experienced the frustration that comes from gridlock. it's inevitable because more and
more cars are cramming on to streets and freeways. but gridlock can also be a matter of life and death in emergencies, especially if fire trucks and ambulances are still stuck in standstill traffic. sergio quintana has more. >> this is dashcam video on fire engine one. you see the driver had to go against traffic because of gridlock along wilton lopez road. this is something fire crews are allowed to do but they prefer not to because of safety concerns. >> there is only one lane there, one lane that way. there's a huge median in the way. in case of an emergency no one can get down. >> i'm very concerned too. something happens and you can't get the emergency vehicles in here, it's a problem. but it's solid traffic in the averages from middleton road to the demark bridge. >> the traffic in menlo menlo ps
become such a problem they have an agreement with another city to drive around there if it is, but we need to have fast response times to get to people's homes when they are on fire, when someone has been a heart attack, they are in a vehicles accident or there's a 911 call. >> the commute times we aren't meeting the standards. that's about road design. >> a similar concern has been raised by san francisco fire chief over narrow streets in her districts. she was concerned fire trucks would not fit down narrow streets. and she is hoping emergency crews will have a voice in any changes. abc7 news. >> in richmond investigators say a man riding a bicycle was killed after he went around a railroad crossing arm. it happened just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday. the man got hit by a union
traffic train. investigators say he was trying to beat the train. many people ran when this tree fell along columbus avenue in san francisco's north beach yesterday morning. nobody was hurt. supervisor julie christensen's office radio tweeted these pictures shortly after the tree fell around around 10:30 a.m.. it was one that was scheduled to be removed by city crews. president obama is back in the white house this morning. he left los angeles last night after another whirlwind day of fundraising. his three-day west coast trip also took him to oregon where he spoke to families of the rosenberg massacre and to san francisco. abc7 news was outside the theater on market treat yesterday where hundreds of people lined up hoping to get a glimpse of the president before his speech. fundraiser also attracted protesters, many from the block lives matter movement. president obama shared the
spotlight with kanye west and offered some friendly advice to the rapper who may have political aspirations. we have that story. >> in case kanye is serious will this whole thing -- i have advice for him. first of all, you have to spend a lot of time dealing with some strange characters who behave live they are on a reality tv show. and you have to be cool with that. >> being married to kim kardashian shouldn't be a problem. >> same if you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy. that's what's known as off message in politics. you can't say something like that. a lot of people do it in congressional speeches. >> that might be good advice for kanye to follow. he went to serious issues he said this country needs to
address, including immigration, climate change and gun violence. >> we don't have to have young boys in oakland getting shot every day. we don't have to have kids in classrooms feeling threatened because somebody's got an amount k47. we don't need to have that. that's a choice we make. >> president obama said it is avoidable with regulation changes that preserve the constitution and protect children. and that was abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson. an oakland family will remember this moment forever. president obama embraced their baby boy at sfo shortly before taking off for los gatos. they were invited to the president's sendoff, and the commander-in-chief took notice of joseph iii. >> he said how great will it be if he reaches for the baby. you always think about those shots. we hoped he would but said it would be far-fetched. when he said give me that baby,

you are going to head out for a jog or a bike ride. fairfield, very light wind at 59 degrees. 61 concord and a look at san mateo which was very, very foggy yesterday. nice and clear right now. our forecast high light, partly cloudy this morning. look for sunny sky, slightly warmer in some areas and hot weather tomorrow and tuesday. once again we have the elevated surf right on through the coastline from monterey to sonoma county. this is due to a verien are jettic northwesterly with swell. dangerous conditions here will continue. with the nice days the beaches will be pleasant but patchy fog. we aren't going to get rid of the fog directly. we are in between systems. we have a system to the north and this system will come in late tuesday into wednesday with some higher clouds. in fact, monterey, the central coast you can see some showers kind of unsure whether or not we going to see anything out of it but it certainly will cool us down after a big warmup tomorrow
and tuesday. so today hooks-like this in san francisco. about 70. low 70s and breezy by 3:00, 4:00 in the average. a little bit suppier and a beautiful day out this. if you are headed to oakland we are looking at temperatures in the upper 70s. game time 1:25. it should be a pretty warm one with numbers staying throughout the upper 70s throughout the day. in and around the rest of the bay area we look for numbers up a few degrees with more sunshine. 81 today in san jose. 85 in morgan hill. average highs really in the upper 70s. so you will be about five degrees before normal here. mid-70s for san mateo. 72 san francisco. look for low 70s up toward richmond. lower 68 #* -- 80s napa. accuweather seven-day forecast showing temperatures a little warmer today but the warmest day of the week will be on tuesday. it will climb. a big jump tomorrow. and then the cooler weather with

delivered. barbara said the thieves stole the package after the driver left it open her driver in lane view. >> 34 years i've never had ming stolen but it was put by the front door. >> barbara is hidden from the front street and she's never had problems with packages sent there. she sent a claim with fedex. and the company said it sent an e-mail making that promise. barbara says fedex told her they never received it and requested she ask the company to send it again. >> i said you know what? i jumped through all your hoops, i've been in touch with "7 on your side" and "7 on your side" is on my side now. >> a week later fedex sent barbara a check to replace the missing pump. and we resolved this issue with the customer by a consumer service. we don't speak about specific

fog from the san mateo coast. winds will be on shore so that will keep us comfortable and temperatures maybe within about two degrees from yesterday. plenty of sunshine. it's really when the fog disappears tonight and we get a slight offshore push is when we are going to see the warmest days which will probably happen on tuesday. we will talk more in detail about that and the extended outlock which could see a few sprinkles in some of your neighborhoods . >> while our weather is pleasant, southern california is boiling. an orange county city yesterday reached 105 degrees. 63 people were treated on a parade. and instructors told band members to drink lots of water. the heat was so bad cables melted in west los angeles, causing power outages. in south carolina there are still thrash flood warnings in effect this morning even though dry conditions are predicted for the rest of the week.
even with things simmering down, more than 300 bridges and roads remain closed. dams are still being monitored open top of the 20 that already breached. 19 people have died on account of the floods. south carolina's governor is urging residents to stay at home today and watch some football. the college murders and two more shootings since then have cast their shadows on the presidential campaign. abc news reporter richard cantu has the story. >> a memorial service for lucas, one of nine victims of the college massacre. three shootings in a week have put gun control in tight focus once again. president obama, who visited the families of the victims open friday, has asked for increased gun control measures. he addressed the national
convention committee last week. >> we don't have to have students in classrooms feeling threatened because someone has an ak-47 >> bernie sanders picked up the theme. >> the american people in large part believe that we should improve and expand our background check system. >> sanders, who has not always held the liberal line on gun control, will face hillary clinton for the first time in a debate tuesday night. clinton has proposed a sweeping plan, a crackdown on the sale of guns on the internet and at gun shows and vow to go by pass canning, if necessary, should she become president. the republican field is dubious about anti-gun laws. >> many of the places where the mass shootings occur are gun-tree zones. they select these places because they know they aren't going to meet resistance. >> and president obama was met by some protesters who questioned his motives. >> he's here for a political agenda. >> abc news, new york.
>> on this week the republican party's point of view on the race for the white house and the ongoing search for a speaker of the house. presidential candor and governor bobby jindal will weigh in with his views. you can see it right here on abc7 at 8:00. while governor jindal says democratic calls for tougher gun laws is shallow and simpleminded, governor brown of california looks to make things tighter. it is currently illegal to have a firearm within one thousand feet of a school or college but people with permits are exempted. that exemption ends with a new law. governor brown also signed an act that will allow you to automatically register to vote the next time you renew your driver's license at the dm are v. his office calls it landmark
meche and you are they hope it allows millions to stay on the voter rolls. you can opt out if you want, and oregon is the only other state with a similar measure. it's been a little more than a year sips an outpouring of support from abc7 news went to the rescue of starving and abused horse necessary the south bay. this morning the mores are thriving but the rescuers are facing across sis. ama daetz has more. >> this is a family near watsonville. what we are doing is giving something that somebody didn't want that was being thrown out, we gave him a life. >> here's bobo in september of last year, starving and infested with parasites. >> i didn't think he was going to make it. >> bobo was one of 30 neglected horses are found in morgan hill and gill roy, all owned by the same man, now convicted of felony animal abuse. >> nobody will take the time to fix these horses and give them a second chance. >> at first santa clara county
animal control refused to step in so a nonprofit equine rescue center bought 11 horses in the worst condition and brought them to a sanctuary in hollister. one horse was so sick he did die while in their care. but the others are all doing well. this is a horse that was pregnant when she was rescued. >> the horses have such special needs. they need grain and hay three times a day. it's not an easy process. >> volunteers pitched in. >> healing. the horses give me love, i can give them love. >> but the care still costs thousands of dollars. the horse's former owner is under court order to pay restitution, but the monthly checks barely make a dent. $14.54. >> monica runs the center which finds homes for adoptable horses and drugs lord joaquin 'el chapo' guzman sanctuary for others. >> you can tell which office horses we've had for a long time because they are fat.
>> it's led to a glut of unwanted horses where the current drought. they have more than 80 and are struggle to pay the bills. it's so bad they may have to shut down but there is hope. >> this property has four wells on it. >> that's right, there's water here so they need an irrigation system to grow food and cut down the bills. >> it will unable them to be financially solvent and secure and not have to rely so heavily on donors on an ongoing basis. >> if they can raise the money for irrigation to show it's financially do-able, he has large donors lined up to buy it and republic it as a horse sanctuary. if not, the future location grim. >> these horses have nowhere to go. >> that was ama daetz reporting. the center needs to raise about $50,000.

>> welcome back. it's quiet on this sunday morning. we have a weather check with lisa coming up. sandcastle builders were keithing in san francisco. at ocean beach about 2,000 people on 25 teams put their creativeness to the test. it attracted architects and engineers on their day off. the event raises money for arts and education. this morning san jose mayor will kickoff with a few remarks. the first-ever event will stretch from downtown to east san jose, linking many city parks. it will feature activities for people of all ages and some of the highlights include a chance to see all eight super bowl

>> we got better as the game went on, especially in the third period. a 1-0 game and showing a lot of character how we played. playing in their end most of the third period. it was a good effort tonight. >> the sharks are back and we are for real this year. >> 49ers face the giants in new york. highlights tonight at 5:00 right here on abc7. i'm mike shumann. have a great day. >> all right. neat week coming to an end. how is it going to be weather-wise? >> just as nice as yesterday. it was beautiful. had a nice breeze, plenty of sunshine, and the fog cleared just in time. this morning really very little low cloudness to speak of. where we do have it, it's situated along the san mateo coast. even then a few peaks of sun. everything going according to plan for neat week with a lot of sunshine. you can see some patchy low cloudiness. a ridge of high pressure is going to be building the next couple days and that's going to
bring back warmth around the bay. temperatures ranging from the mid-50s in morgan hill. 61 in half moon bay. and outside from our exploratorium camera you notice the clear sky. 55 sack rowa, 54 novato. we are five, six degrees cooler in the north bay, well elsewhere we are about the same. adding a few degrees in some spots today but i think the north bay can see a jump. 8, 10 degrees in some areas say north of parts of marin county. it will warm up there and slightly elsewhere. the coast should romaine comfortable. partly cloudy this morning. a little warmer for some of you and downright hot tomorrow. by tuesday we are looking at the hottest day. elevated surf witness again. still the remnants of what was hurricane oho. we have that to deal with but
still the on shore push. we are in between two systems. you notice the with unto the north and then the one to the south. this is bunt that will play into our forecast really as early as tuesday for parts of monterey, san benito county. but as for today we are smack-dab in the middle, enjoying lots of sunshine and nice sea breeze throughout the around. we lock for the low to kind of meander and bringing clouds and cool down into southern california as soon as tomorrow. in fact today a few degrees cooler there. still very hot in the low 90s. then the clouds will affect southern california and then also bring in better shower chances there than what we will see. but it will also bring up cloudness and break down the highs today, tomorrow and into tuesday. for the rest of the day today in san francisco neat week in texas, noontime, 70 degrees. 70s throughout the afternoon. a little breezy but, boy, just a spectacular day out there to enjoy it if you are going to check out the blue angels or if you are in san jose for today.
