well, good monday morning. we begin with the search for answers after a russian passenger jet fell from the sky in egypt, killing everyone on board. >> a grim scene this morning as the bodies of many of the victims begin arriving in st. petersburg, russia. flown back and loaded on to trucks. >> investigators say the plane broke apart midair. it's too soon to tell if it was a tragic accident or a deliberate act. we get the latest from lana zak. >> reporter: this morning, the remains of more than 140 bodies are returning to grief-stricken families in st. petersburg, russia. among the 224 dead, 25 children. these photos show happy families ready to make their way home from a vacation in the resort town of sharm el sheikh, egypt. today, authorities are digging deeper into the mystery of what brought down the plane just 23 minutes after takeoff. >> this happened so quickly. so instantaneously, there may not be evidence on the black boxes. so what will be more important

will be looking at the wreckage on the ground. how it's laid out. >> reporter: with eight miles of scattered debris, one theory, a bomb. >> the probability here is with an in-flight breakup that something caused that. something on the order of a bomb or an incendiary explosion of some sort on the plane. >> reporter: another theory, human error or a problem with the plane. the ex-wife of the co-pilot said he had complained about the air bus 321, including on the morning of the crash. and a final theory, could terrorists on the ground have taken out the plane? an isis-linked group claimed responsibility. but intelligence officials say they lack the missiles that could take out a plane flying at 31,000 feet. >> some of the claims of responsibility we're hearing from terrorist groups do not jibe with what might have happened to this airplane. >> reporter: and while a terrorist attack from the ground is extremely unlikely, according the experts, several airlines have said they will not fly in

that space until authorities determine exactly what went wrong. from washington, lana zak, abc news. reena? kendis, back to you. also overnight. a republican revolt. rival forces joining forces to control the debates. >> representatives of more than a dozen candidates met behind closed doors last night. in a suburb of d.c., as they agreed on several changes they hope will go into effect before the next debate. >> i think that's progress. that's my response. it's progress. i'm glad. >> reporter: a post-halloween pow wow at this virginia hotel. >> we agreed to interject ourselves in the process. more than we have been. >> reporter: spurred by trick questions republicans say the press reserves for them. >> is this a comic book version of a presidential campaign? >> reporter: the rivals can agree that questions like that -- >> it's not a nicely asked question. >> reporter: -- are asking too much of gop candidates. republicans are hoping to take more control of debate formats from moderators. >> we're going to insist on opening and closing statements. we're going to negotiate with

sponsors directly about format. >> reporter: dr. ben carson speaking with martha raddatz on "this week." >> we should have moderators who are interested in disseminating the information about the candidates. as opposed to, you know, gotcha, you did this, you -- defend yourself on that. >> reporter: senator ted cruz is a little bit more ambitious. >> could you imagine a debate moderated by sean hannity and rush limbaugh and mark levin? >> reporter: one-time front-runner jeb bush is trying to regroup his campaign after a poor showing in last week's debate. >> i have enough humility to know that i have to get better. >> reporter: the next question may be whether bush remains a viable candidate. nine days and counting until the next debate. and on the democratic side, bernie sanders is releasing the first tv ad of his campaign. he spent $2 million for air time in iowa and new hampshire for the spot that highlights his journey from brooklyn to the

u.s. senate. it depicts sanders as a long-time fighter against injustice and inequality. it mentions his opposition to the iraq war and his battle with wall street. a powerful line of storms taking aim at southeast this morning. after taking on water-logged texas. the death toll in the lone star state's flood disaster is up to six. after another round of violent storms over the weekend, some parts of houston got nearly a foot of rain since friday. inundating homes. sweeping away cars. triggering more than 130 high-water rescues. those powerful storms also spawned tornadoes. nearly a dozen from texas to mississippi. with six twisters reported in south and east of houston. cleanup efforts under way, including in the city of friendswood. where the national weather service says an ef-2 tornado caused widespread damage. that band of storms moving through the southeast. and later, the latest weather radar shows a particularly

strong band moving eastward across the florida panhandle. molly cochran from accuweather joins us now. good morning, molly. >> good morning, kendis and reena. umbrellas going to be getting a good workout on monday in atlanta. also into the charlotte area. those flights could be hindered due to the wet weather. do keep that in mind. the next system moves on shore for the pac northwest, bringing rain, snow, a wintry mix. first significant snowfall of the season coming up across the sierra nevadas. definitely could be good news for the california drought. higher elevations could get 6 to 12 inches of snow. kendis and reena back to you. >> our thanks to molly cochran there at accuweather. breaking overnight, in arizona, people across the phoenix area a bit shaken up after a string of small earthquakes. the first quake was a magnitude 3.2 tremor, striking around 9:00 last night near black canyon city. two slightly stronger quakes struck before midnight, 4.1 and 4.0. no reports of injuries or any damage.

a one-time presidential candidate who was almost larger than life is being remembered this morning. former tennessee republican senator fred thompson has died from a recurrence of lymphoma. thompson's career spanned from washington to hollywood and back. serving eight years in the senate. appearing in "law & order" and at least 20 motion pictures, including "in the line of fire" and "the hunt for red october." the former senator was 73 years old. pope francis is planning a trip to mexico. church officials say the pontiff will visit in february. he's expected to address the violence plaguing mexico. but also the issue of migration. that's a theme he touched on during his visit to the united states in september. francis, you'll remember is from argentina. this will be his fourth trip to the americas since becoming pope. the kansas city royals are the new world series champions. the royals, scoreless in game five, until the ninth inning.

but then the breakaway took place in the 12th to defeat the new york mets, 7-2. >> the jubilant team celebrating their first world series win in three decades. they'll celebrate again on tuesday with parade through the streets of kansas city. what a night for those folks. >> and their fans. >> minutes after the royals' win, merchandise hit the market. >> yes, fanatics started selling royals champs gear. including a shirt that reads party like it's 1985. that's the last time they won the world series. more highlights coming up from espn. of course, it's kind of ironic that the royals won this in queens. but for mets fans, i believe, the royals lost last year, won this year. right? is there hope? there could be hope for next year. >> right. an e. coli investigation rocking chipotle. that restaurant closing dozens of stores. and caught on camera. a routine traffic stop turning violent for a police officer when the driver steps on the pedal. plus, candy concerns. police warning parents after hidden dangers are found inside halloween treats.

a healthy baby is worth the wait. a first look this morning of the aftermath of a house explosion in suburban detroit. the blast was felt as far away as three miles. it lefed this house completely. blew out the windows of nearby homes. and sent at least one man to the hospital with significant burns. he's expected to survive. no word on the cause of that explosion. encouraging news in the search for the black box from the cargo ship "el faro." wreckage believed to be the ship looks to be upright on the ocean floor.

the wreckage was found over the week end by the navy. the black box is critical the finding out why the giant went down. 33 crew members died when the ship sank during hurricane joaquin. that was earlier last month. the e. coli outbreak at chipotle in washington state and oregon is expected to widen. chipotle has shut down all restaurants in both states after nearly two dozen people became six. eight of them seriously. the outbreak most likely came from a fresh food product and not a sick individual. doctors encourage anyone who ate at those stores and got sick to be tested. halloween scared people away from theaters. it was the lowest grossing weekend of the year at the box office. bradley cooper's "burnt" fell below predictions, as did "our brand is crisis." giving sandra bullock her worst opening ever. "the martian" on top with $11 million. "goose bumps" $10 million. and "bridge of spies" had $8 million. >> we'll see how the new james

since friday, three homes have been evacuated. authorities have put up fencing as you can see, and have added patrols to keep people out. it's about a mile from a sinkhole that swallowed a man back in 2013. now for a look at your morning road conditions. flooding across the northeast into virginia. roads wet up and down the california coast. across nevada and idaho. and up into the upper midwest. if you're flying, airport delays possible in atlanta, charlotte, san francisco, as well as salt lake city. three victims of an apparent random shooting spree in colorado springs are being mourned. >> witnesses describe the scene halloween morning as the gunman began walking the streets. the first to be killed was a man on a bicycle. then two women were hit. this woman saw the horror unfold and called 911. >> it was pretty scary. he looked right at me. i was like, okay. i started walking away. i said, oh, please don't shoot me. >> police are looking for a motive.

but they say the gunman made an angry blog post in the days before the shooting. he wrote against religion, the government, and his father. frightening moments for a michigan police officer all caught on dash camera. he was trying to give the driver a ticket for a suspended license when the pair began to struggle. the driver then jumped in her car and watch what happens. slamming it in reverse. taking the cop along with her. he, by the way, we're told, physically okay. back on the job. the driver is facing several serious charges as a result of that. meantime in orange county, california, a vicious attack on an uber cab driver. police say an apparently intoxicated passenger, 32-year-old benjamin golden, punched and pulled the hair of the driver before the driver pepper-sprayed him. golden was arrested at the scene. the driver says he's looking for gnaw job because he doesn't feel safe driving for uber.

a disturbing find in the meantime for trick-or-treaters in pennsylvania. several kids found sewing needles in their halloween candy. the needles were found in candy bars collected from kennett square. no reports of anyone getting hurt. time for sports. the royals are world series champs, beating the mets in another nail-biter. >> yes. let's get highlights from our guys at espn. hey, there, good morning. jay harris, john buccigross. big sunday in sports. lots of nfl. first, we have a world series champion. >> the kansas city royals. down, 2-1. one out. salvador perez. david wright. two outs. here comes eric hosmer. if lucas duda makes an accurate throw, the game is over. would have been a double play. duda's throw goes wild. we go to extra innings. and christian colon singles in jarrod dyson. royals win. they're champions.

huge nfl matchup. peyton manning and the broncos hosting the packers in game between undefeated teams. ronny hillman to the middle and runs to the left side. strong side. his second td of the night. broncos up, 14-0. packers down, 27-10, fourth quarter. first and ten at their own 13. aaron rodgers hit by ware. rodgers recovers in the end zone. broncos defense held rodgers to just 77 passing yards. they win it, 29-10. >> watch football tonight on espn. panthers and colts. "monday night football." it will be a good one. good morning, america. >> good morning, fellas. all right, some more sports right now. because some college football referees are in hot water this morning. all of it centers around these six crucial seconds in this weekend's miami-duke game. >> duke up by three points kicks off to miami, where player after player passes the ball. we're talking eight times. until one player breaks free, races down the sideline, and yep, scores.

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good monday morning. thank you for joining us. >> when you are rested it is hard to know how to act after an extra hour of sleep going back to standard time. >> we also have the rain we have been talking about. it is here. meteorologist mike nicco? >> the storm used the hour for gather extra moisture. here is live doppler hd with a green shield across most of our neighbors, and no escaping the wet weather today. as we put it in motion you can see the back edge of the line moving through cloverdale so steady rain through most of the morning commute. it is falling in san francisco on the embarcadero at .12" so rain influence the 7:00 hour, then we turn to showers by noon

and a possibility showers and thunderstorms, that will taper by 4:00, visit our temperatures, mid-50 to mid-60s and by 7:00 the event is over. here 10 look at a big rig traveling on the bay bridge that crashed into the off-ramp, eastbound at treasure island and that was going to cause major delays. you can sigh the lower deck covered in debris and respond c.h.p. and all lanes have re-opened and we back to normal headed into the east bay. that is not the only problem at the east bay, we do have a couple of sig-alerts. from emeryville camera to the eastern span of the bay bridge traffic, so far, so good, quiet into san francisco. the problem spot is here as we track weather and traffic, you can see the areas shaded in darker friend an indication of where we have harder rain and more soak the conditions.

traffic is bumper-to-bumper traffic over the altamont pass because of a big rig accident westbound 580 at greenville road. we have a big rig accident eastbound direction, as well, with sig-alerts until further notice. now you are looking at two hours and 46 minutes, almost three hours to head out of tracy to get to down lynn. >> thank you is a big headache. we will watch 580 all morning. the first major storm of the season is going to make for dangerous and difficult conditions for many bay area commuters. we will go to amy hollyfield in the north bay with the brunt of the rain action. >> we just got here if the north bay and we are getting a light rain. at sir francis drake boulevard you can see the road are wet. it has been getting rain for a while here. it is nice and wet. also, not just here but the rain rolled in last night. look at the
