live, where you live, this is "abc7 news." ♪ for the land of the free ♪ and the home of the brave [ cheers and applause ] >> 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick takes his protest of the national anthem to southern california. but this time, he had the eyes of the national on him and he wasn't alone. good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> kaepernick's refusal to stand up was broadcast live just before the start of the game. >> chris nguyen was on the field and joins us live from qualcomm stadium with our developing statement. chris?
>> reporter: to be honest, i've never experienced anything like this before. we could hear 49ers fans booing colin kaepernick ahead of tonight's game. under the bright lights of qualcomm stadium, tense moments between those who came to watch the game and an athlete who came to play it. [ crowd booing ] >> reporter: as nearly 240 sailors, marines and soldiers stood, colin kaepernick continued to protest, kneeling down during the national anthem to call attention to what he says is the oppression of minorities across the country. >> it's coming from a good place, and i think if people think about the matter at hand, they would understand why he's sitting down. >> reporter: others made it clear they weren't happy. >> i love the 49ers, but i'm very disappointed and hurt by colin kaepernick and what he did. to me, it's a disgrace. >> he gets paid millions to play
football, but then he makes a statement for what he has to do for a job. >> reporter: kaepernick was joined by eric reed who told "abc7 news" that he backs his teammate. but some called it a slap in the face, especially when the chargers hosted their 28th annual salute to the military. >> this was all about honoring the service people, and his disrespect was over and beyond stating a point. >> reporter: it's worth noting that kaepernick did show support for the military. however, critics say it's not enough. >> it's hard to swallow, but i'm going to stay faithful. >> reporter: a national debate that will likely continue on for weeks to come. blaine gabbart is expected to be named starting quarterback, but this likely won't be the last time we hear from colin kaepernick. as you know, he's very active on social media.
i'm chris nguyen, "abc7 news." >> chris, thank you. just minutes ago, kaepernick made a new pledge to take action beyond what he's doing before the games. >> and making sure that i'm actively in these communities, as well as donating the first $1 million i make this year to different organizations to help these communities and help these people. >> kaepernick said he has great respect for the military. he also called on san francisco police to better address racial issues within the department. in oakland, another player also sat during the national anthem. espn tweeted this picture of jeremy lane staying seated tonight. larry beil will have full highlights of the game coming up later in sports. new at 11:00, a freshman football player was airlifted to the hospital after an injury at
a football game in san ramone. firefighters say the teenager was complaining about back pain and numbness and tingling. he was conscious and breathing. fireworks show caught many people in walnut creek off guard. people went on twitter asking what was going on. some thought it was an accident or fire after hitting lots of sirens. the fireworks show was celebrating the newly renovated expansion of broadway plaza, a shopping center with restaurants. residents say it was really loud and wonder why they weren't notified. in less than one hour, the former man convicted of sexual assault will be eligible for release. brock turner served three months of a six-month sentence. our reporter is live at the santa clara county jail.
>> reporter: the sheriff says brock turner will be released between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. but this is a high profile release. you can see the preparations are already in place, and they say if there's any trouble, that plan could change. >> it's extremely frustrating that we have to be here in the first place. >> reporter: disappointment hours before former stanford swimmer brock turner is released from jail. he served three months for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at a party on campus. >> it's time that we take action towards supporting survivors in our he will system and universities and all communities. >> reporter: legal am list steven clark said turner's sentence was unpopular but not illegal. >> we don't want judges looking over their shoulder reading the tea leaves as to how this will be received in the public opposed to making difficult decisions. >> reporter: michelle donor is heading up the effort to recall the judge. >> he's biased in case of
violence against these women. he does not treat these crimes like the serious harms that they are, like serious felonies. >> reporter: people who support the recall effort will rally at the jail friday morning at 10:00. by then, turner could be on his way home to ohio. >> what i think brock turner could also do is issue an apologize and statement of remorse and telling the public that he gets it. >> reporter: turner turned 21 years old in jail. he'll be on probation for three years and has to register as a sex offender. stay with "abc7 news" for continuing coverage for the brock turner release. beginning at 4:00 a.m., they'll have many overnight developments. now to the coast guard, rescuing fishermen from their boat after it ran aground near
the golden gate bridge. our reporter joins us live from ft. baker. lisa? >> reporter: eric, this is where all 15 passengers as well as crew members came to be questioned after being rescued. they left just a little while ago, tired and wet. after a day they didn't expect. sky 7 was overhead as one by one passengers slowly climbed off the new seeker fishing boat. the vessel was taking on water after deputies say it hit rocks on the shoreline below the north end of the golden gate bridge. >> the front of it was sinking a little bit. >> reporter: it was just a few feet from the rescued passengers when she took these photos. the new seeker left at 6:00 this morning for a day of salmon fishing. but it was during the return that the captain experienced problems and called for help. >> it started just coming into the shore and got kind of like
beached and took on some water. next thing i know, there was the coast guard and firemen. >> reporter: the coast guard and fireboats responded quickly, taking every precaution to save passengers and also this yellow lab on board. this was not the relaxing day anyone bargained for. >> we didn't even see it coming. it just kind of happened really fast. >> we started taking on water and pretty scary. >> reporter: everyone on board was driven to ft. baker for questioning and for an assessment. the cause is still under investigation. happening now in the gulf of mexico, a hurricane is making landfall in florida for the first time in 11 years. just before hurricane hermine came on shore minutes ago, heavy rain and strong winds pounded the gulf coast just south of tallahassee. >> let's get right to sandhya patel with the storm's track.
sandhya? >> it made landfall just a short time ago. it's a large hurricane making landfall with 80-mile-an-hour winds. and it just has been hammering the florida area with heavy rains, storm surge, tornado watch box is up right now. we have watches and warnings that extend through sunday night. if you have travel plans to the east coast, keep this in mind. crossing the florida panhandle into the gulf coast states and along the carolina coastline friday evening. so heavy rainstorm surge, the biggest problems the wind gusts are 47 miles an hour along the florida coastline. here's a look at lester, powerful storm heading in towards the pacific. and the hawaiian islands are under a hurricane watch. so that's a category 3 if you're traveling there. the strongest winds are expected to remain north of the ha ryan islands. the biggest threat with this is going to be surf and possibly

you're looking at video provided to us is the chp says the mother was driving without a license when she lost control of the car. the car ended up, upside down in six feet of water. tonight, a charges in florida. cornell bernard explains what happened. >> reporter: jasmine, the woman in the center of a bay area sex misconduct scandal, is in the martin county, florida jail after a violent confrontation with security staff at the rehab facility where she was getting help. she arrived at the recovery center last friday. she said she was excited and nervous about getting treatment for her heroin and sex
addiction, paid for by a victim's fund. >> reporter: what did they say today? >> i have to go to rehab. >> reporter: and they're trying to get you to go when? >> tonight. they said it was a paid vacation. >> reporter: but three days after arriving, the incident report says she ran outside, removed clothing and began flashing motorists. officers say she then bit a security guard's arm. >> we have to realize she's been a victim for a long time. >> reporter: she's concerned but not surprised by the teenager's behavior. police say after she was arrested, she wiggled out of handcuffs, hit her head repeatedly against a window and attempted to solicit sex from deputies. >> behavior is an effect of trauma. she's dealing with a lot of trauma, and she doesn't even
understand her own victimization. >> reporter: she believes getting help is the first step, but healing may take years. cornell bernard, "abc7 news." there's a mess at the port of oakland. south korea's shipping company has declared bankruptcy. so hundreds of containers are waiting to be picked up at the port. this is a critical time for retailers. >> there are hundreds of vessels stranded in ports around the world. this is the peak shipping season. this is when retailers in the u.s. are storing their shelves for the holiday season. >> the holdup could raise costs as companies look for space on competing shipping lines. time to turn our attention to our weather. >> it's going to be warmer? >> it is, but to the until the start of the weekend. we're going to keep you in the cool pattern for a few days,

terribly cold to start off. 7:00 a.m., temperatures in the mid to upper 50s with a few clouds around, walli iwarming u noontime. tomorrow, at 7:00 p.m., still clear and breezy, upper 50s to low 70s. specific temperatures for your area, 67 tomorrow afternoon in san francisco. 71 in oakland. 77 in san ramell. palo alto, 71. places like napa, san jose, up to the low 80s. mid 80s, concord. 88 in antioch. 65 in half moon bay. now when you look at the labor day forecast, a little cooler, low 60s to low 80s. below normal on sunday. temperatures come up slightly around the bay and inland. it is going to be milder for labor day. notice the absence of the heat. until next week, accuweather's
seven-day forecast, low 60s to upper 80s, so slightly warmer tomorrow. we'll see the temperatures drop a few on saturday. sunday, monday they come up a couple of degrees. but it suspect until tuesday, wednesday, thursday that we start to see the low to mid 90s returning inland. i know if you're wondering, why has it been so cool? one of the reasons is one system after another passing to the north, just keeping the marine layer deep and the breezes strong. but this time around with the 90s, expecting high pressure to build in, bringing back the heat. >> just in time for fall. ♪
