pausing production. and we do say good morning, everyone, on this monday. we're filled with pleasantries unlike the debate last night. it was a showdown in st. louis. >> oh, yes. >> a barrage of personal attacks. as hillary clinton and donald trump clashed on the stage. >> the tension was evident right from the beginning with the candidates refraining from the traditional handshake. debate number two came on the heels of a bombshell video from 2005 in which trump is heard making lewd comments about women. >> and in a defiant move, trump fired back by parading bill clinton's accusers before the country. holding a surprise news conference moments before taking the stage. the candidates dropping the pleasantries before uttering a word. no handshake as they walked on stage. it didn't take long to address the elephant in the room. donald trump's vulgar remarks caught by an open mike in 2005. >> this was locker room talk. i'm not proud of it.

other arguments. that was a great -- i thought a great display of presidential leadership. >> now she's blaming the lie on the late great abraham lincoln. that's one that i haven't heard. okay, honest abe. honest abe. never lied. that's a good thing. that's the big difference between abraham lincoln and you. >> reporter: in one of the most stunning moments of the night, trump broke with his running mate on syria after abc's martha raddatz reminded him mike pence said just last week, the u.s. should be ready to strike military targets of the bashar assad regime. >> he and i haven't spoken. and i disagree. >> you disagree with your running mate? >> i disagree. right now, syria is fighting isis. >> so the candidates did manage to end on a positive note, you might say. when asked to say something nice about each other, clinton complimented trump on his children. he praised her as a fighter who doesn't give up. >> and trump tweeted this family photo, all smiles as they headed home. and clinton addressed reporters

on her flight back to new york saying she feels great. >> yeah she says she couldn't wait to have a drink. >> mike pence tweeted it was a big debate win for trump and said he was proud to stand with him. >> yes, for more insight now, we turn to abc news chief political analyst matthew dowd who watched it all and analyzed last night. >> in this debate, donald trump came in behind. he was falling in the polls. he didn't improve himself. he needs a win. and he needed a win. i think when you look at the points in this debate over the course of the debate, donald trump did fine at moments. she did fine at moments. there were some lows on each of their sides. it's basically, i think you might give it a slight points lean to her. it won't make a difference in the polls. she's going to walk out of this debate with the pretty solid lead that she came into this debate. donald trump has one opportunity left, the next debate, to change those dynamics. >> and the this morning, twitter confirms it was the most tweeted debate ever. >> here are the most tweeted moments. number three, when trump said,

we heard it there, that hillary would be in jail if he were in charge of the law. number two, when trump said he was a gentleman. >> and the most tweeted moment, when trump said he disagrees with mike pence in regards to syria. >> here's the venue for the next debate. the basketball arena at the university of nevada las vegas. that's on wednesday, october 19th. the format will be similar to the first debate, not a town hall style like last night. and we'll have complete coverage right here on abc. turning to breaking news from overseas. specifically the middle east. two missiles fired from yemen have landed near a u.s. destroyer in the red sea. the missiles ended up in the water near the "u.s.s. mason." whose home port is in norfolk, virginia. it's not clear if "the mason" was targeted. a ship from the united arab emirate s came under fire just last week in the same area. hurricane matthew is finally moving out to sea, after drenching the southeast all weekend.

the storm's economic toll in the u.s. is estimated between $4 billion and $6 billion. matthew is expected to be the costliest storm to strike the u.s. since sandy in 2012. and dangerous flooding is now the main concern, particularly in parts of north carolina. matthew dumped more than three months of rain on the area around fayetteville, north carolina, in a 14-hour span over the weekend. rain-swollen rivers in the eastern portion of the state are also expected to crest today. the death toll from the storm in the u.s. is at least 20 people. and several people remain missing. and the situation in haiti is much worse. the first shipments of united nations food aid are arriving in areas hard hit by matthew. reports say the storm killed at least 900 people there. there are serious concerns now about the spread of illness as well across regions that were almost entirely destroyed. still ahead right here, more from the debate. why one of the audience members was a top trending topic on facebook and twitter overnight. and breaking overnight. a major announcement regarding samsung and its galaxy note 7. after more problems with the

the suspect in the shooting deaths of two palm springs police officers is expected to be charged with murder, as the community comes the together to remember the fallen officers. with candles and flowers, mourners paid respects at a vigil and a growing memorial for jose vega and lesley zerebny. they were shot dead responding to a domestic disturbance call. a third officer was also injured. zerebny just returned from

maternity leave. the palm springs police chief recalled a heartbreaking moment after the shooting. >> to witness her husband -- in full riverside county sheriff's uniform, because he's a deputy sheriff -- kiss her on the forehead for the last time. >> the suspect in the shooting, 26-year-old john felix is expected to be charged with first-degree murder and several other felonies this week and could possibly face the death penalty. it could be a tough commute this morning for thousands of train riders on new york's long island after a weekend derailment. a train doing maintenance side-swiped a commuter train, causing it to derail. 33 people were injured in that accident. and now federal investigators are trying to figure out what happened. the derailment comes less than a week after a deadly commuter train crash in new jersey. one person was killed when the train ran into the terminal in hoboken. limited service is expected to resume today into and out of that terminal. a best-selling book is now a best-selling movie.

"girl on the train" was number one this weekend, almost $25 million in ticket sales in north america. "miss peregrine's home for peculiar children" was second. be dry across most of the country, including the southeast atlantic coast, finally. some rain in the northwest. and there will be some showers in the plains. and we have breaking news this morning about samsung's galaxy note 7, the new smartphone that's said can catch fire. >> yes so we learned overnight that replacementproduction of replacement phones has reportedly been halted. this follows claims that the new version may also overheat and catch fire. a 13-year-old girl claimed her replacement galaxy note 7 caught fire in her hands. another man woke up to a smoke-filled room, his phone engulfed in flames. as a result, three wireless carriers are no longer offering the new version of the galaxy note 7. at&t and verizon are offering to exchange them for other phones. t-mobile will give customers exchanges or refunds. and we have new details on a dramatic rescue in san francisco bay. 30 people were thrown into the bay when their boat capsized.

the nfl's week five wraps up with tampa bay visiting carolina. and there are games in all three of baseball's ongoing playoff series. >> we get some highlights right now from espn. good morning, america. from the studios of espn, i'm john buccigross. the baseball playoffs are in full swing. we have a team that has punched their ticket to the league championship series. the toronto blue jays looking to sweep the texas rangers. bottom of the tenth. two on, one out. might be an inning-ending double play and on to the 11th inning we go. instead, the throw to first is in the dirt. josh donaldson of toronto comes around to score the game-winning run. and toronto sweeps texas. they advance to the a.l.c.s. they'll play the cleveland-boston winner. boston's football team, new england's football team, the patriots, welcomes back tom brady on sunday. from his four-game suspension. first game back in cleveland. and it was an easy one. finds martellus bennett a couple of times. once there, once here. patriots up big, 30-7.

time to check "the pulse." starting with the word that had so many americans scratching their heads during last night's debate. >> the mention of the embattled syrian city of aleppo set off a google frenzy. according to merriam-webster, lepo as in l-e-p-o, topped the list of search terms during the 90-minute face-off. you might remember when libertarian candidate gary johnson asked on a show, what's aleppo? apparently, gary johnson is not alone. >> he wasn't alone. >> the number one trending topic on twitter was this guy. his name is ken bone. he's one of the uncommitted voters who questioned trump and clinton. >> so mr. bone asked the candidates about energy policy. shortly thereafter, he became an internet sensation, possibly because of his outfit.

homeless encampment around 238 and 880 the fire is out now. here is where it could impact traffic this morning. or at least commuters. it was close to the bart tunnel. we have crews working on the smoke situation. 18 train are in service. in delays are reported. i am keeping a close try on that. we have a problem in the south bay next. >> now the video from the scene alexis was talking about. >> in san leandro officials closed two lanes of 238 to get to the fire. we are toll the flames began in a homeless camp at 2:30 this morning. the smoke then spread into the bart tunnel under the freeway. that tunnel needed to be clear before service began. bart only began running the train as few minutes ago. so far so good. it was put out quickly. >> did you watch the debate last night? this morning a majority of americans say hillary clinton won the second debate by not as much of a margin as the first. >> looking at the palm numbers
