a south san francisco family without their home after a fire ripped through it. that's where leslie brinkley is here. >> i've here at the fire station one block away back here that the home caught fire. it's a miracle of firefighting it didn't spread to other homes here. they're built very closely together. the flames started in the garage and quickly roared up into the attic. a mother and father and two adult children ato a smoke filled house. >> came up through the garage, into the attic. the adult daughter drove down to fire station and knocked on the door, told them there's a fire in house. >> reporter: flames were shooting through the roof as the first of 50 firefighters rolled in. there was limited access in front so firefighters used a ladder truck from follow put out the flames and keep the fire from spreading. by morning the devastation was overwhelming. the family tried to retrieve

some belongings from the rubble in suitcases and boxes. there are two classic cars in the garage. the owner burned his hand on a super heated door to the garage as he escaped. he adult son told me they wanted privacy as they sort things out. but said they're grateful to have friends and family to stay with. fire investigators say the fire was an accident but have not pinpointed the cause. in south san francisco, abc7 news. > fire left two san francisco state university students homeless after it dammed a 'apartment building last night. it started on the seventh floor of the building. investigators have not said what started the fire. volunteers took part in a fire prevention giveaway today for members of the creative community in the wake of the ghost ship warehouse fire. we were in oakland as a group of local artists handed out 100 fire extinguishers and 120 smoke detectors and then made sure everyone knew how to use them.

all the children got presents from santa and mrs. claus who arrived on a fire truck. the fire depth put on the party which reunites survivors with caregivers. >> with a burn injury there's always post traumatic stress and anxieties and actually, being together with people who have had similar experiences is very therapeutic and also therapeutic for my staff to see them healed. >> live music, crafts and food were all part of the festivities. there were a lot of kids enjoying the holidays in the east bay as toys for tots happed out gifts. we were in berkeley as police and firefighters teams up with marines to give back. okay almost came with his great-grandmother to choose his toys. >> just moved here from michigan, and when i heard about toys for tots here, i just quickly jumped onboard. >> there were more than 3,000
