every year, even before advent is over, i search the radio until i find an fm station that plays christmas music and nothing but, 24/7. [ laughter ] i love it. i do admit, though, that i get frustrated with some of that -- my confession continues -- because so much of the music we hear at this season is less about the celebration of our savior's birth and more about the winter-solstice theme. you know, snowy winter wonderlands and jingle bells, mistletoe, chestnuts roasting by an open fire, and all that. and all of that is delightful. don't get me wrong. i'm no scrooge when it comes to all of this. i hum along with it, with a little bit of pre-christmas guilt. but it has little or nothing, really,
to do with the nativity of our lord jesus christ -- the reason, as they say, for the season -- for the season that begins today. my spirit soars when i listen to handel's "messiah" or "adeste fideles," "come let us adore him," "o holy night," or even that remarkable line from the song "mary, did you know?" -- "mary, did you know, when you kiss your little baby, you kiss the face of god?" that gets at it. one of my mother's favorites was "do you hear what i hear?" the 1962 hit by noel regney and gloria shayne baker. do you hear the beckoning call of our creator inviting us, all of us, to new appreciation of who we are, created in god's image, redeemed in jesus christ, and destined for eternity, if only we strive to be faithful? do you hear, in the melodies of the christmas feast, the longing of every human heart for that deep peace that comes only in the gift of friendship with christ? do you hear, in the season's expressions of love and friendship, an echo of the unconditional love of god our father? do you hear, in the angelic chorus, the excitement of all true believers at the joy of singing out the glory of god?
in the word that is god's word, do you hear the only guarantee of justice and peace, of healing, for our wounded nation, our fragile earth? and do you see what i see, in the face of the divine infant? do you see the unveiled gentleness of god's own face, turned forever toward us in mercy; in the smiles of mary and joseph, the meaning of tender and unselfish love? do you see, in the awestruck eyes of shepherds, a glimpse of humankind's longing for god and joy at finding him?
in the anxious eyes of the refugee, the tired eyes of the poor, the hungry eyes of the homeless, do you see, there, jesus' own eyes pleading for a loving look, a merciful word, a healing touch? do you know what i know -- what god has revealed to us this day? that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light? and upon those who dwelt in a land of gloom, a light has shone; shone on you and on me, right here, right now, in our lives? do you know that the word has become flesh,
