weekday commute. quick check of the drive times. i'm having a hard time finding any not in the green. out of santa rosa, in the castronev valley also in the gr. a scary moment for an uner driver when someone pulled out a gun. >> matt keller has more on this story. >> reporter: good morning jessica and natasha. san francisco police say they picked up this shooting on their shot spotter. scary moments for this uber driver who has no reason why he was targeted. >> he take out the gun. he shoot me. fortunately the bullet pass in front of my pace. >> reporter: the 31-year-old's window was shattered into pieces all over his car. the bullet hole still clearly visible. the afghan refugee did not want to give his real name.
he's afraid for his safety. the father of two lives in sacramento but was driving for uber in san francisco around 3:00 saturday morning when he says a man followed him for a few blocks on foot before running to his window and firing. san francisco police say the uber driver did file a report but they do not have leads or suspects. the driver also filed a report with uber. a company representative said they are relieved the driver is okay. reporting live in san francisco, matt keller, abc 7 news. thank you. scary. san francisco hoping this morning's surveillance video can help them find who stole a giant menorah from a park. it was taken over the weekend from washington square park in the city's north beach neighborhood. the menorah was lit saturday night, but then ra rabbi realized it was gone sunday. the community says that wasn't the only thing taken. the wires on the lights were cut as well. >> with all the crime going on in the city, this doesn't have to be a priority, but it should be in regards to it's the
holiday right now. >> people put a lot of work into putting that there. they put a lot of work towards their religion. it's not cool. >> they're hoping they find that and smaller menorahs stand in the larger one's place for now. we are tracking developing news in the east bay. pleasant hill police investigating a shooting at a popular mall. thank goodness no innocent bystanders were hit it happened at the crossroads shopping center around 9:00 last night. the mall was open for business and someone started opening fire, shattering windows. several businesses were hit including a barbecue restaurant. witnesses tell police both the shooter and victim quickly took off. no word yet on a possible motive. in chattanooga, three people were hurt when someone set off fireworks inside a store. someone thought it was gunshots and they started running. security guards at mall in ft. worth, texas placed the mall
on lockdown after police say at least 100 teens were involved in fights there. dozens of police officers including s.w.a.t. help break up the brawls. police say they initially responded to calls of gunfire inside the maul. fortunately no one was seriously hurt. four teens received citations for fighting. violence and chaos broke out at more than a dozen shopping hot spots across the country yesterday. look at that map on your screens. police are investigating whether social media was used to plan the fights. it's not clear if the brawls in those different cities were at all related. you can expect more security at malls today. heads up for san francisco muni riders. you'll be paying more in the new year. on january 1st the price of a muni adult monthly pass will go up from $86 to $91 a month. cash fares will rise. muni drivers want people to move away from cash and on to digital means of payment. the chronicle reports that it's a more efficient way to collect fares which leads to
streamlined service. an astronomer credited with revolutionizing our concept of the universe has died. vera rubin died of natural causes on christmas day in princeton, new jersey. she was 88 years old. ruben found that gal axies don' quite rotate the way some predicted and some other force was at work, mainly dark matter. she was the second female astronomer elected to the u.s. national academy of sciences. new details this morning about the russian military plane that crashed into the black sea on sunday. one of the plane's flight recorders has been found. the recorder was brought ashore in the town of sochi. all 92 people on board were killed. russia held a day of mourning for the victims yesterday. the plane was carrying dozens of red army choir singers to sing in syria for russian troops. investigators say it was likely either pilot error or mechanical
failure that led to the crash, not terrorism. columbian investigators confirmed a brazilian soccer team's jetliner crashed because it ran out of fuel. 71 people died when the plane crashed while heading to a match in colombia last month. officials said the plane's engines began shutting down minutes before it eventually crashed while circling an airport. the pilots were being criticized for failing to ask air traffic controllers for a priority landing because they were running low on fuel. san francisco could use some help counting the number of homeless in the city. the department of homelessness and supportive housing needs volunteers to participate in its homeless census on january 26th. team also work in four-hour shifts from 8:00 to midnight. it's estimated there are nearly 7,000 homeless people in san francisco blamed in part on the
region's hot real estate market. today star quarterback derek carr will be having surgery on his broken leg. he went down with the injury in the win against the colts on saturday. he will be out 6 to 8 weeks. the super bowl in five weeks. despite the season-ending surgery, the team is confident they can make a playoff run. >> it's a tough game. things happen in the game. it's all about the team, about us moving on with the next opportunity. pulling together as a group of men, being unselfish and sacrificing for each other. all of those things. doesn't change regardless of who it is. >> backup matt mcgloin will start next sunday against the denver broncos. the san francisco fire department has a new plan to rebuild a crumbling pier and it involves a floating barge. we'll explain. and next, the new year means new laws for parents. what you should know before strapping your child into a car seat come january 1st.

we are less than a week away from new laws taking effect. here are two involving alcohol. >> starting january 1st, powdered alcohol will be banned in california. the making, selling and buying of it. anyone in violation faces a $500 fine. also new, salons and barbershops will be able to legally serve customers a glass of wine or beer without a permit
as long as the drink is free. meanwhile, a new law also starting on january 1st, changes the rules about children in car seats. kids under age 2 will be required to use a rear facing car seat. children who weigh more than 40 pounds or more than 40 inches tall will be exempt from that. the next story is so great. one of taylor swift's oldest fans got the surprise of a lifetime yesterday. [ cheers ] those screams are because she surprised 96-year-old world war ii veteran cyrus porter and his family at his home in missouri. she even played her hit song "shake it off" just for him. porter says he has been to two of her concerts and appreciates how her music helps him connect with more than 20 grandchildren. >> a world war ii veteran and taylor swift. >> those things don't normally go together. %-p.

surveillance video shows the moment three suspects broke into a store in new york stealing millions of dollars in furs. they used a rock to gain entry, but watch here as one of those guys gets bonked on top of the head by a falling piece of a doorframe. the thieves broke into the dennis basso high-end fur store
saturday morning. they made off with 20 of the stores most expensive fur. the geary corridor bus rapid transit project in san francisco is one step closer to be finalized. the project would create a dedicated bus line from 34th to 26th avenue where the lane would run in the center to just past arguello boulevard and back to the sides of geary. the final environmental impact report was released this month. it could be approved in january. time to ask finney. >> that's right. this morning, sema from lafayette has a question about her cable and internet. michael finney has her answer. >> how can we fight -- not fight, but get our rights if an internet provider or any cable provider would come and change the term of the contract that we had with them and change it without our knowledge?

right now looking at light volum volumes. almost exclusively green on the traffic flows. in oakland, southbound 880 a couple vehicles hit some type of debris, and caused a couple flights. the right lane is blocked as they change those tires. a little hesitation westbound on the bay bridge, that's our only slow spot this morning. police investigating violence at a pleasant hill mall. bullets fired into several open stores. >> amy hollyfield is live crossfields mall with more. >> they did a quick patchup job here overnight. look behind me, you can see a piece of cardboard now where there used to be a window. this is at the hawaiian barbecue restaurant in pleasant hill. this window was shot out last night. here's video of what it looked like after the shooting.
they got the call at 9:15. reports of shots fired. this is at the crossroads shopping center. very busy shopping center in pleasant hill and interstate 680. police say the shooter ran away so did the victim. so they weren't able to interview the people involved toe find out why this happened. we are hearing a lot of shock this morning from customers coming to the starbucks next door to get their coffee. another customer tells us he's taking it in stride. >> happens. it's that kind of world now. i mean, there's nothing you can do about it. from what i hear no one was hurt. that's important. >> reporter: here's a look at where one of the bullets hit the wall right next to the starbucks. yes, no one was hurt besides the victim who was shot. no bystanders because the mall was open at time, no shoppers were hit or hurt. this is a very busy popular
shopping center. there's a kohl's department store here, dick's sporting goods. you can see the shopping center from the freeway. at this time police say they don't know if this was random or targeted. they're looking for witness accounts as to what happened here. reporting live in pleasant hill, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> look at this, this is one of at least 12 reported incidents in malls across the country. this fight broke out at a food court in cleveland yesterday sending people runs for the exits. officers had to use pepper spray to clear this crowd out. one juvenile was accused of assaulting an officer. they said the incident was loosely organized on social media. colorado police had to shut down a popular mall in aurora after word of a fight spread on social media. you can see the snapchat video from the aurora mall. shoppers quickly moving to the exits here. police say 500 people were inside the food court at the mall simply to fight.
>> several officers were attempting to make an arrest of two people fighting. the crowd began to circle our officers, our officers had to call for help. >> two people involved in the fight were injured. one of them is seriously hurt. pg&e is investigating what caused a power outage that left 370 customers along san 370 customers along san francisco's embarcadero in the overnight. the out stage started at 11:00 last night from beach street to washington street. police put flares on the ground at washington forcing drivers headed to the golden gate bridge to take an alternate route. power has been restored to all customers. two men are in custody in hayward this morning, they're accused of stabbing and killing a man inside a target store on christmas eve. the victim was found in the whipple road target around 8:00 saturday night. he died at the hospital. police tell us that he's a 36-year-old man, but police have
not released his identity yet. witnesses say the three men got into a fight shortly before the attack. police are asking anyone who was there to come forward. police say a woman caused a crash that killed herself and a teen name boy. now her family is apologizing to his family. the suspected dui crash happened christmas morning on capital expressway in san jose. mourners showed up to the crash site yesterday to honor the lives lost. a 25-year-old mother of one and in the second car a 14-year-old boy. jessica zamora may have been under the influence of alcohol. family removed beer cans that friends apparently left in tribute at the memorial. >> they don't realize this is what took her life. my condolence goes out to the family of the little boy that she took the life of. you know, we're very sorry. it was a bad accident. she made a bad choice. >> family tells us that zamora was a single mom and her 5-year-old daughter is distraught.
police say zamora crossed the center divide on capital expressway on sunday and careened head on into the lexus. the 14-year-old was killed and his parents identifies have not been released. police are investigating a possible hate crime in santa monica after someone there va d vandalized a synagogue. when the rabbi showed up for service on sunday, the second day of hanukkah, they found human waste and rice smeared at the entryway. police are not calling it a hate crime quite yet because it's not specifically anti-semitic. >> it's so sad at this time people should feel they want to express themselves in such a negative way. >> the congregation has been targeted in the past. a month ago a man stood during a service and shouted heil hitler. and last year someone left a letter with a swastika that said get out of here you jews. 6:36 now. the faa and ntsb are investigating a crash that killed two people in fresno. officials say the plane crashed shortly after taking off from sierra sky park yesterday
afternoon. sierra sky park is a residential aviation community along highway 99. residents can land at the airport, taxi down the road and park their planes in their driveways. no word on the victims identities. officials say this is likely the first double fatal crash at that airport. 12 people are injured after this jet airways plane skid off a runway in western india. 154 passengers and seven crew members were on board when it happened at goa international airport. jet airways said it veered off track during takeoff and ended up in the grass. passengers were put on a different plane to their final destination of mumbai. happening today, japanese prime minister shinzo abe and president obama will make history at pearl harbor. abe arrived yesterday morning in hawaii and later laid wreaths at the national memorial cemetery of the pacific. today abe will become the first japanese prime minister to visit pearl harbor memorial. that honors the sailors and marines killed in the 1941 attack.
in may, president obama visited the hiroshima peace memorial in japan. it is current versus future president. president-elect donald trump is responding to president obama's claim that if he had ran for a third term he would have won. president obama said that he's confident if he ran again and articulated it, he believes he could have mobilized a majority of the american people to rally behind it. the president-elect took to twitter saying no way, jobs leaving, isis, obamacare. mr. trump also said he is shutting down the trump foundation to avoid the appearance of a conflict. that plan facing a major snag now. the new york attorney general's office is investigating the foundation and says it cannot legally dissolve until that legally dissolve until that investigation is complete. good morning. waking up to partly cloudy skies, freezing temperatures. here's live doppler 7. we are highlighting the areas

welcome back. music producer in san rafael describes the late pop star george michael as brilliant and a perfectionist who always gave 110% to make everything just the way he wanted it to be. ♪ baby, i know you're asking me to stay ♪ >> michael walden is a three-time grammy winning artist and producer. he worked with some of the biggest names including george michael. michael died on christmas day at age 53. walden said michael was a one in a million talent.
>> george had it all. sex appeal, dance, great stage presence, recording, great production, great everything. he is one of those people who had everything going on. so, it's a great loss. michael's estate is estimated to be worth over $100 million. it's expected to be divided among many of his celebrity god children. cnbc reports the concerns about technological vulnerabilitieses come as experts say smart home devices are hot gifts this holiday season. microsoft could become the first company worth a cool trillion dollars. that's with a "t." one analyst thinks it could happen with the help of linkedin which microsoft just purchased. apple was favored as the most likely candidate for the first company to cross the trillion dollar mark after it became the first u.s. firm to pass a market value of 700 billion. that happened in 2015. microsoft right now is worth almost $500 billion. finally, starbucks has some new drinks. it's called the tuxedo collection. it is a mix of dark and white chocolate goodness, according to the company's website. the collection earns its name with all that black and white effect in its drinks includes three drinks, the tuxedo mocha, the tuxedo hot chocolate and in case you're in the mood for
