this morning on this morning on "world news now," the midwest is getting hammered by a deadly ice storm. cars are unable to get any traction on some completely iced over roadways. and that system continues to march east. we'll have the forecast just ahead. and we're learning more about the terrifying ordeal club goers went through in mexico. one american has been killed. as we hear from a texas man thankful to be home. and new this half hour, what first kind of looked like a dinosaur creeping out of a florida marsh. >> it is. believe it or not this is an alligator. what we're finding out about the beast that's lighting up the internet. >> huge. and the high drama that lit up last night's episode of "the bachelor." can you guess who fell asleep during the rose ceremony, and

nine deaths over the weekend. hundreds of traffic accidents and a major traffic disruption. alex perez has the story from chicago. >> reporter: from colorado to maine, residents on alert for a wintry mess. meanwhile the southern side of the storm spawning tornadoes. a big rig driver spotting this funnel cloud in houston. this surveillance video capturing the storm's power. at least 30 homes and this skyscraper damaged by storms in dallas where hundreds of fans were forced to shelter in place after the packers cowboys game. this truck going into an icy lake. everyone is okay. the coating of ice snapping trees and knocking out power to thousands in several states on a weekend that saw danger and death on slick roads. one kansas trooper narrowly escaping after swerving to avoid an out of control semi. another truck bursting into flames in nebraska after crashing into another vehicle.

nothing to do with russia. an american dead after gunfire in a mexico nightclub. the victim is an 18-year-old college student of denver. her brother says she was going to school and working to help her mom. a texas man who survived the shooting returned last night to the airport in houston where his mother was waiting. he was shot in both hands and said he never expected his vacation to end like this. >> i'm very grateful to god that he gave me the life and the strength to get out of that area on time before anything else worse happened. >> he says he was with a woman when she died and he's in a state of shock thinking about her and others lost.

a florida fireman is fighting for his life. unfortunately three men died from toxic gas fumes. the men has entered the 15 foot hole in the florida keys while trying to fix a roadway. the fireman went in without his air pack because the hole was too small to accommodate the equipment. and there are concerns right now this morning that thousands of los angeles families may have had their health information breached. l.a.'s children's hospital says a laptop stolen from a doctor's car may have held information for as many as 3600 patients. families are being notified this week. officials believe the data may have been erased. and the social network that started with six second videos has died on the vine. >> the vine social media network app shut down at midnight. it was replaced by vine camera. >> new, okay. >> a rebranded app that will allow you to post your short videos now directly to twitter, but the separate social network is gone. that created some stars.
